Do people not realise that for those who welcome them into the family they are part of the family. And if you have a dog and say it's just a dog, I'm not sure you should have one.

Does it bring comfort to @Gettingbysomehow? Yes.
Does it affect anyone else? No.

I guess that’s true but it just sounds completely bonkers. I can’t imagine comparing a pet animal to my children!

YeOldeGreyhound · 06/12/2025 22:23

Christ, your views on dogs are constant and abhorrent to the point it is obvious who you are even though you keep name changing. Regulars to dog threads know you. You need help.

Cherrysoup · 06/12/2025 22:24

Given I’m sitting with one on my knee and holding the paw of the other to stop him chewing it, I can’t disagree with the OP. She didn’t say a dog is the equivalent to a child, no idea why some pp are saying this.

For me (child free), they’re pretty important. I’ve had to organise Christmas visits to family around my DH’s shifts/dog care. It’s just normal.

They are not comparing their pet to your children. They don't even know your children.

Oh fuck me. I have been away from this thread for 24 hours. Has it descended into the who would you chose in a fire bullshit?

I love my dog. But ALWAYS the human.

My dog or any child. Always the child.
My dog or my husband. Hmmm. But always my husband.
Fuck me, I am as anti Royal as they come, I’d have them up against the wall in a heartbeat, but my dog or Kate Middleton, it would be Kate (and I would better be heavily bestowed with riches).

Also, I would risk my life to save another human. I would not risk my life to save my dog.

Edited

Who would you choose in a fire? For me it would be my signed Rick Astley CD and probably one of the twins or my partner. Never the dog.

OmNomShiva · 06/12/2025 22:27

CanineJesus · 06/12/2025 22:16

You must be joking? I get you love them a lot but to call them your daughters?

It implies that a tomcat unburdened itself within its namesake, and that its twin furry progeny clawed its way mewling from her cross-species kitten-crucible towards her milky teat.

And if they’re not twins, she coupled with that tom twice.

Notadame · 06/12/2025 22:27

Do you understand that when someone says "I can't imagine comparing an animal to my children", they're talking in general, they aren't literally saying, why are you comparing an animal to MY actual, real life children?

Or are you deliberately being obtuse?

a dog literally attacked innocent people and was rightly blown to smithereens.

Nothing abhorrent about applauding that. More please.

Do you have kids? Did you change their nappies to fulfil some sort of fetish? Because that is your warped logic right there.

This is just getting beyond weird now.

Not really sure why it's descended into people who think their dogs are the equivalent of human babies versus those who think all dogs should be rounded up and shot.

I would hope most of humanity manages to sit somewhere in between those two wildly extreme ends of the spectrum.

TheQuirkyMaker · 06/12/2025 22:37

Notadame · 06/12/2025 22:19

I think this is the thing - there are plenty of people I know or even who I'm related to whose deaths I would be significantly less upset than I would by the deaths of one of my animals. That's on an individual level but it's not the same thing as thinking human lives and animal lives are equal. Overall, I do not think they are the same and that's a key difference.

I agree human lives are more important than animal lives. 100%. For example, what's happening in Ukraine is dreadful, awful and the war criminals need to be brought to justice. Gaza too. There is something radically wrong with the US administration to allow all this shit.
But that doesn't stop the little drama being played out in my Dorset garden, my little Golden struggling to go out for a poo, from breaking my heart. We all have our tiny insignificant lives.

OmNomShiva has name changed, but they are well known for hating dogs, and people who have dogs, and people who like dogs.
They think dogs should be rounded up, taken out in aircraft and dropped into the sea.
They are also obsessed with dog bum holes and poo.

Yes, but I don't think anyone has said you aren't allowed to be upset by that. I certainly haven't. I had to have my 21 year old cat put to sleep last year - I held her and sobbed while she died. I still feel sad about her now. No one's taking that away from me. Her life had value. I just don't believe it had the same value, at a societal level, of a human being.

Yes agree and also hope most people are sensible - love animals and don’t wish them harm but also don’t worship them like some sort of deity.
That’s where I sit anyway - big animal lover but know the difference between animals and humans ❤️

I picked yabu. I was not sure where the thread was going, but I read your first couple of responses and yabu.

It is not ok to post an AIBU and then start telling people not to comment etc. You literally asked for comments

Clueless dog owners take their untrained dogs into the most ridiculous and inappropriate situations and expect other people to be delighted. You cannot take your dog into someone else's house unless that person has specifically said 'please bring your dog'. You can love your dog as much as you like. Don't assume other people do.

I dread dog- owning friends asking if it’s ok for them to bring their dog into my (no pet) home. It’s really awkward and uncomfortable to have to refuse - such a downer. I really wish people wouldn’t ask.

I don’t want the germs or smell or dirty feet in my house - and I’m allergic to dogs.
