To think that people who dress quirky are more often than not uninteresting

Just on observation, I work in a creative field and I find that when I meet people who dress very quirky they are often very uninteresting and not very creative. I find the most creative and interesting people are those who are not really bothered about how they dress. Has anyone else come across this?

No weirdly i just find people dressing does not consistently represent anything

Same! Boring people are boring, interesting people are interesting, no matter what they wear.

InLoveWithAI · 02/12/2025 19:44

Nope. Cant say I've noticed this.

InfoSecInTheCity · 02/12/2025 19:45

I dressed the ‘quirkiest’ when I was incredibly unhappy with how I looked and wanted to distract from my actual physical reality by wearing dresses with funky prints in the hopes that people would be soo distracted by the dress they wouldn’t see my face and body.

Now I’m happy with how I look I just wear whatever and feel good in it.

Lopiy · 02/12/2025 19:46

I don’t think it really represents anything. My long term mentor in the creative industry I work in, dresses incredibly quirky, he’s interesting and the most creative person I know, he also happens to like incredibly weird clothing. I think the type of clothes you wear tends to just represent the type of clothes you like, rather than much about the persons personality

Grayson Perry?

Ahsheeit · 02/12/2025 19:46

I dress quirkily because I like it. More comfortable than mainstream clothes for me, and I wear them for me, not to represent that I'm quirky.

XWKD · 02/12/2025 19:46

No. Some people are quirky dressers and most are not. Some people are interesting, but most are rather ordinary. Most quirky dressers, just like most "normal" dressers are likely to be ordinary.

TheSmallAssassin · 02/12/2025 19:48

No, I don't think there is a correlation. How do you dress?

Comedycook · 02/12/2025 19:48

Yes... this is something I have noticed too op.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 02/12/2025 19:48

They could be considered "quirky" and not care about how they dress....

hamstersarse · 02/12/2025 19:50

I think ‘quirky’ is often just another uniform

‘Quirky’ tends to mean bright colours - hair, clothes, vintage, dyed hair, piercings, tattoos I think?

Its signalling something by joining the crowd, but I’ve never thought boring, more unhappy or at least ‘finding your way’

Spot on.

TomatoSandwiches · 02/12/2025 19:53

What do you mean by quirky?

itsthetea · 02/12/2025 19:53

People wear what they like for a whole range of reasons - some of which you might find quirky because they don’t fit your concepts of acceptable

you can’t judge someone’s character by their clothes

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 02/12/2025 19:54

As others have said, I have not noticed this. Many people who dress a bit quirky/different tend to be quite quirky and colourful and interesting themselves. Very judgemental view @Coldcoffeekindamorning You sound a bit jealous. Are you miffed because you don't have the courage to be a bit different even though you really want to? Afraid someone will judge you?

There's some irony here. 🤔

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/12/2025 19:56

No, it represents their taste in clothing, that is it.
Maybe you are expecting a more vibrant person based on the outfit.

Giraffemug30 · 02/12/2025 19:57

Tbh I can't say I've thought enough about whether people dress quirky or not to notice any form of correlation

Perzival · 02/12/2025 19:59

I think quirky dressers can be more confident but i also believe that some dress differently in order to add something to them that they are lacking or think they are lacking in their personality. I love the people who genuinely dngaf they own it but then there are those who don't conform because they conform to a different group eg goths, kids with pink/ green hair or middke aged women etc

PrincessFairyWren · 02/12/2025 20:03

I don’t agree that there is any correlation and think it could be a case of confirmation bias that once you have formed that opinion it seems to be more common. However it does come across as a bit mean spirited, maybe they are creative in areas that you aren’t a witness to, or maybe they have a difficult personal history that they haven’t tapped into that side of things. They might know that they aren’t creative and don’t care or value that as something they want to nurture.

Middle aged women is ‘a group’? Did I misunderstand you there? I thought middle aged woman come in all varieties and are not some homogenous lump of humans that conform to a stereotype, be that dress or anything else.

LaurieFairyCake · 02/12/2025 20:05

True of me. I basically dress like a children’s tv presenter but I’m not particularly interesting as a person Grin

Bruisername · 02/12/2025 20:05

I don’t really care as long as they’re not a ‘what am I like’ type. I knew someone who always wore loud odd socks and short trousers and just went on and on about it. It was performative

ConnieHeart · 02/12/2025 20:14

I disagree. There aren't only 2 options where dressing is concerned. I dont dress quirky but I do care about how I look clothes wise

Hedgehogx · 02/12/2025 20:26

I dont care what others wear as long as they have manners.
Iv`e spoken to hookers that have more manners that some men & women in suits.
