To think that people who dress quirky are more often than not uninteresting

Just on observation, I work in a creative field and I find that when I meet people who dress very quirky they are often very uninteresting and not very creative. I find the most creative and interesting people are those who are not really bothered about how they dress. Has anyone else come across this?

Yes.

And then there's Su Pollard!

Su Pollard's ringtone is the Cagney and Lacey theme.

Well I never 😀

There is definitely a proportion of ‘quirky’ dressers who are doing it to prove to the world how interesting they are. “Look at me, I’m so daring and fabulous”

I actually think that anyone who expends that much mental effort every day on putting an outfit together, whether it’s super on-trend or quirky, probably has self esteem issues. Those who genuinely don’t give a fuck what the rest of the world thinks about them tend to dress for comfort & convenience.

Omg touchy aren't you! Wonder what happened in your life to make you like this.

No, I just spend a large part of my very satisfying existence wondering why some people have absolutely no understanding that other little people have a different experience than them. Only why I bother as they’re just not worth the thought.

Zany dressers are like NonBinary people. They’re so boring they have to take drastic action to pretend they’re not.

Coolasfeck · 04/12/2025 20:24

Do you mean the ‘I’m mad me!’ type? If so yes.

If you mean the tryhard type who purposely dress like they’ve rolled through a jumble sale in order to project a Helena Bonham Carter upper middle class artsy vibe, also yes.

Many people don't like it when others don't conform. They resent and disapprove of those who aren't arsed to fit in, turning an individual choice into something personal.

Drastic action...says it all.

Live love laugh. ✌️

Oh Lord please don't lump me in with that lot! 😂
Not liking mainstream fashions and preferring to wear second hand or 'different' clothing does not mean I think I am some sort of weird phenomenon of science-defying nature!

My experience is the opposite of what you describe,
I always loved clothes in my teens/early 20’s and was happy and confident in my own skin. Then I had kids and lost myself for a few years, my body changed a lot and and my lack of confidence showed in my clothes, I wore very plain stuff that I didn’t really like or feel good in, lots of leggings and but it did the job and was comfortable. I didn’t feel good about myself though.
More recently I’ve found my love of clothes again and I am really enjoying clothes and putting them together again. I get real pleasure from it and it doesn’t feel like a mental effort to me. Idon’t really give a crap what anyone else thinks.. I wouldn’t say I m a massively out there dresser, no bright hair here. but I like interesting prints, mixing vintage and new stuff, I don’t own what others consider basics like jeans. I would love to make my own clothes but no matter how hard I try I am not that way inclined.

I do think there are some people who hide self esteem issues behind bright clothes and colourful hair but there are also plenty who try to blend in by wearing jeans and a jumper. You can’t really generalise.

manicpixieschemegirl · 05/12/2025 10:34

I think actual quirky dressers are very few and far between. I don’t consider the blue hair and septum piercing brigade quirky because lots of people dress like this, and they’re mostly very similar. Same with the tv presenter types and the leggings and puffer coat crew. Most people fall into tribes.

Quirky dressers to me tend exist outside of these tribes and are often much more interesting than those who do.

That’s them. Yes. They have a lot to prove. It must be exhausting.

You’ll notice @MintTwirl that I said ‘a proportion’

As in some, not all.

I know quite a few ‘look at me!’ types and under the layers and colours and fabulousness they are often deeply insecure.

Oh yes, Grayson who likes to wear a dress with a huge pretend cock sticking out 🙄

To a children’s charity event.

CoffeeCantata · 05/12/2025 12:45

Totally agree OP!

I think, to put it unkindly, some people have a hat…or a “quirky” dress style…INSTEAD of a personality.

And while we’re at it, anyone who needs to tell you they’re”bohemian “ or arty is most definitely not.

Hmmmnmmn · 05/12/2025 13:34

I work with artists and strongly agree!!

Loving your name!

OneReasonWhy · 05/12/2025 14:21

Different people are interesting to different people. I dislike all this “x is boring” talk…most of the time people that claim others or things are “boring” or “uninteresting” simply lack the ability to think critically and understand that differences doesn’t equal boring.
