To think that people who dress quirky are more often than not uninteresting

Coldcoffeekindamorning · 02/12/2025 19:41

Just on observation, I work in a creative field and I find that when I meet people who dress very quirky they are often very uninteresting and not very creative. I find the most creative and interesting people are those who are not really bothered about how they dress. Has anyone else come across this?

You sound very judgemental.

💯

Grayson Perry?

Yes.

And then there's Su Pollard!

I get there will be exceptions to the rule but say for instance Greyson Perry - great artist but would his work be so interesting if he didn't dress the way he did? Would it be noticed as much? There are soooo many more visual artists that are more amazing and don't dress like this only most people wouldn't know them because they're not flaunting themselves on tv. I'm also talking about people who aren't celebrities.

"flaunting" himself on TV!? 😄

I find Grayson Perry fascinating and extremely engaging. He doesn't usually dress as Claire when he does his TV work.

I see from this oddly jealous sounding comment that you and I are not going to agree on this subject, but never mind.

Oh yes, Grayson who likes to wear a dress with a huge pretend cock sticking out 🙄

worstnotholiday · 02/12/2025 23:10

I see what you mean op- but I think for different reasons. True quirky dressers are ime fabulously interesting- those that have a real sense of style and self and expression through fashion- think David Bowie/ Iris Apfel / Morfydd Llwyn Owen / Coco Chanel (who we may think of as the opposite of quirky now but I her time the minimalist elegance was extremely quirky) . And many non famous individuals I know - I think that to be properly quirky it has to be unique and based in a strong sense of self and taste. But they are undoubtedly the minority.

That contrasts with what I would call “fashionably alternative” which like any trend is imitation, a uniform, an attempt to fit. This is what I think you mean by quirky, and if so, ime that does sometimes correlate with uninteresting. An over compensation perhaps?

Okiedokie123 · 02/12/2025 23:12

I think you are being weird. judgy stereotypes that aren’t even true.
You might as well conclude that all women like cooking and all men like football etc

ForFunGoose · 02/12/2025 23:12

I don’t have a ‘look’ so you could make a different judgement about me depending on what day we met.

Clothes do not make the person

Runrabbitrunss · 02/12/2025 23:22

Some people describe my dress sense as quirky. For me its all about the shapes and fabric - the sheer enjoyment of it - when i see a beautiful dress, . Moving by in the environment - it literally feels like its moving art to me - as you wd experience a picture.

it brings joy - nothing to do with anything else

I did not know this! I've just looked it up. Not great, I agree.

No need for the eyeroll - you and I were agreeing on another thread earlier.

BankfieldForever · 02/12/2025 23:32

According to mumsnet I dress like Grayson Perry 🥱, and I don’t think it says anything about me ‘as a person’.

I sometimes, when the situation demands, wear jeans and a nice top. Is my personality much more interesting when I’m not wearing a dress most other people don’t like and wouldn’t wear themselves? No.

I was rolling my eyes at Grayson Perry. He gets all of the eye rolls. Lovely, autogynephilic, Grayson! The acceptable, arty face of perversion.

Wbeezer · 02/12/2025 23:48

I went to art school and know lots of quirky dressers, most of whom are quite interesting( jobs and things they do), or were until life left them less room to be interesting!
some people are very creative with clothes and express themselves by wearing interesting clothes ( my son is a fashion student!) but others can wear “ weird” clothes as a kind of uniform to fit in with an group and fitting in with the group makes them rather conformist in the end ( I’m thinking of the goths of my youth!)
. For others the clothes are a disguise or armour that can hide vulnerabilities.
of course for some it’s just a bit of fun and fun is subjective.

The Popsy cult! Their Facebook group is hilarious, they all think they’re so QuIrky 🤪 with their dinosaur toddler print dresses and matching coat, bag, tights, boots etc etc they all look the same!

Frankly I love my dinosaur dresses and colourful tights and boots so sneer away. They bring me joy and put me in a good mood which means my relationships with people are largely positive. I believe it’s known as serotonin dressing and as @Burnttstated, is often associated with Neurodiversity.

As one of those middle aged women mentioned earlier, I dress to be seen. I have no interest in attracting the male gaze but refuse to be invisible because I’m menopausal. My clunky brogues were recently described as F’off shoes :D

Well according to the OP, that makes you uninteresting and not very creative.

I hope you can cope.

XWKD · 03/12/2025 00:48

For years I only wore black. I'm too heavy now for the clothes I used to like.

I dress like I'm from the 1930s (typically tweed) with modern sensible shoes. It's the look of pure boredom to others, but it feels oddly civilised to me. It's like drinking tea instead of water -which I hate. 🤣🤣🤣 I always wear perfumes that were created 100 or more years ago.

I love looking boring.

You should have written my initial post because this is exactly what I mean! True authentic creative dressers are absolutely amazing but IRL I dont think I've found many people who are actually genuinely like this, for most people it's a uniform they put on and it doesn't match their true self.

Out of interest do people treat you differently depending on what you wear?

I didn't say all people who dress quirky are uninteresting. I said that it's just something I've observed.

I dont think that sounds boring, it sounds like you love it and that's what matters. I am talking about people who dress a certain way to appear cool rather than self enjoyment.

I only know one genuinely distinctive and unique dresser and she’s a really interesting person who lives a really interesting life. A really, really strong, decent character.

She dresses in a genuinely unique way, unlike most ‘quirky’ dressers who are actually following a ‘quirky’ social fad.

tamade · 03/12/2025 08:07

Our warehouse manager attracted the nickname Sergeant Pepper for her outlandish and colourful outfits. It has since been shortened to Peppa. Its not an artistic job but she has some creative ideas for stock control and management and is a pretty good laugh. HTH

@Coldcoffeekindamorning

  1. How would you know their motivations? Are you a mind reader or just projecting?
  2. It's "quirkily", not quirky".
