To think that people who dress quirky are more often than not uninteresting

Coldcoffeekindamorning · 02/12/2025 19:41

Just on observation, I work in a creative field and I find that when I meet people who dress very quirky they are often very uninteresting and not very creative. I find the most creative and interesting people are those who are not really bothered about how they dress. Has anyone else come across this?

Well, I’m sure part of the point of dressing quirkily is to attract the attention of the type of people who like how you dress. So it makes sense that if you don’t their style, they’re not your type of people.

toomuchfaff · 02/12/2025 20:44

You sound very judgemental.

Middle aged women is ‘a group’? Did I misunderstand you there? I thought middle aged woman come in all varieties and are not some homogenous lump of humans that conform to a stereotype, be that dress or anything else.

I meant middle aged women with pink/ green/ blue/ rainbow hair not all middle aged women. I guess I could have made it clearer.

What about women of different ages with those hair colours? All seems a bit of a 'boxing people in' exercise.

soupyspoon · 02/12/2025 21:05

I am extremely interesting but spend every day dressed head to toe in plain black.

Give it a rest. Most people know exactly what i mean by middle aged women with pink/ green hair who have their whole personality based on how wacky they are.

Perzival · 02/12/2025 21:09

Just to add i believe the colloquial term for this group is "highlighters" although it isn't a term i personally would use.

I genuinely don't know anyone like that - I don't need to give anything a rest. I was asking questions to understand. Sheesh.

OneLovingDog · 02/12/2025 21:12

The Popsy cult! Their Facebook group is hilarious, they all think they’re so QuIrky 🤪 with their dinosaur toddler print dresses and matching coat, bag, tights, boots etc etc they all look the same!

Loopylalalou · 02/12/2025 21:25

I do have a theory that lumpen and generally unattractive women dye their hit green or blue in an effort to appear more interesting.
And yes, I do know this is a bitch comment.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/12/2025 21:41

I have very mildly purple hair (white but with a bit of a tint) and am indeed deathly dull. And lumpen. And quite old. So it must be true.

Muffsies · 02/12/2025 21:46

Joe Lycett would appear to ruin your theory.

swingingbytheseat · 02/12/2025 21:49

Interesting question, I don’t like vain people that much, but I don’t think it’s related

Burntt · 02/12/2025 21:50

this was an amusing read.

I believe there is research correlating a preference for bright colours or bold patterns or something or other (non sexual attention drawing clothes essentially) correlates with neurodiversity enough to be of mention here. As a neurodiverse individual I just get on better and find other neurodiverse individuals more interesting so perhaps our neurology will determine our opinions a bit.

I’m looking forward to getting some grey hair. Bright colours won’t take on my dark hair without bleach which I don’t want but I once saw someone with amazing bright blue highlights and she told me it wasn’t highlighted at all just box dye blue on dark but greying hair. She looked so cool I do t remember if she was interesting or not haha

Joe Lycett thinks he's edgy, but he's just a bit of a nob.

If I see someone in colourful 'hareem pants' and different coloured crocs I assume they are one of those cringy circus skills people and try and avoid eye contact.

That man is not interesting at all. He seems to be amusing because he writes amusing emails to get out of parking tickets and troll trolls back and the like. It’s not creative he feeds off other people

Instructions · 02/12/2025 22:00

I don't think you can make these sorts of generalisations with any accuracy. What you find boring will be fascinating to others and vice versa, and people's clothing choices never really seem to predict their personality much.

I get there will be exceptions to the rule but say for instance Greyson Perry - great artist but would his work be so interesting if he didn't dress the way he did? Would it be noticed as much? There are soooo many more visual artists that are more amazing and don't dress like this only most people wouldn't know them because they're not flaunting themselves on tv. I'm also talking about people who aren't celebrities.

I dress for comfort. I don’t care about fashion. How can you tell whether I’m one of the people who dress quirky instead of one of the people who just put on whatever is closest, clean and comfortable with zero regard for fashion or even colour/pattern matching?

I dont care what others wear as long as they have manners.
Iv`e spoken to hookers that have more manners that some men & women in suits.

Just hookers or Broads and Dames too?

Specialagentblond · 02/12/2025 22:48

I think plain and ordinary looking people dress quirky.

like lady gaga. Or Pink

because otherwise people will walk straight past them.

TempestTost · 02/12/2025 22:51

I think this is sometimes true. "Quirky" can be a kind of uniform, and a signal that a person sees themselves in terms of a particular tribe or identity. Like, blue hair, retro dresses, piercings and tattoos look. A fairly large number of people like that seem to have what are very conventional view on a lot of topics.

But in some cases it doesn't follow at all.
