Five Guys. Wtaf?!

I went there earlier DS ordered a cheeseburger and fries, I ordered a "veggie sandwich" with cheese. I was asked what toppings I wanted and for the veggie sandwich I asked for lettuce, tomato and mayo.

I couldn't fucking believe it when I took a bite and that's literally all that was in it - a plastic cheese slice, a bit of lettuce and one slice of tomato.

It cost me nearly £7?!

Was I unreasonable to think that in a burger restaurant, I would receive a veggie/plant based patty, given that it's beside the other normal burger items on the menu? I thought maybe they'd just forgotten to add the patty to it but when I googled, it is literally supposed to be veg on a roll.

AIBU to think this is an absolute rip?

Yes it is an absolute rip! I never eat there because they don't actually have a proper veggie option, which honestly in this day and age is idiotic for a fast food restaurant.

Onesmallnoserighthere · 01/12/2025 22:00

Yes it's insane. I was shocked when I went in five guys for the first time and saw they don't actually sell any kind of veggie burger. Get with the times!

TFImBackIn · 01/12/2025 22:00

It looks as though you should have had this:

Cheese Veggie Sandwich
Freshly grilled onions, mushrooms and green peppers layered with lettuce, tomatoes and slices of American-style cheese on a soft, toasted sesame seed bun.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 01/12/2025 22:01

Isn't that supposed to have mushrooms, onions and peppers on as well as salad?

Pandorea · 01/12/2025 22:01

It’s very rubbish! I ordered it without the bun trying to be low carb and got some cheese and a few mushrooms and onions in a lettuce leaf! I had figured there’d be a veggie burger involved like there is when you order one in absolutely every other burger place.
Their fries are very good though.

vincettenoir · 01/12/2025 22:02

Wow! That’s rubbish.

BoldAmberCat · 01/12/2025 22:02

I often order the veggie sandwich at Five Guys but it’s best with mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc as well.

Greggsit · 01/12/2025 22:02

Five guys food is average at best, but ridiculously overpriced.

Yes, however I asked for lettuce and tomato only (can't stand onions and peppers) assuming that the veg/salad was the topping on a veggie burger.

The description isn't even on the menu above the counter, just the name of the sandwich.

I hate Five Guys for this. It's a pathetic nod to vegetarians, they might as well not bother.

CaramelGhost · 01/12/2025 22:05

It's rubbish. If an establishment called Kentucky fried CHICKEN can serve a decent veggie burger, then so can five guys. YANBU

StruggleFlourish · 01/12/2025 22:05

Oh that is so funny, I had the exact same experience the very first time I went to a five guys!
I also thought a veggie sandwich was a vegetarian friendly patty...
And yes, given the cost, I had no reason to suspect it was too good to be true.
I was extremely surprised to find out that it was just a bun with some lettuce, tomato and a processed cheese slice.
What a let down.
I ate tons of the free peanuts to make up for it

AliceTheBat · 01/12/2025 22:06

If I had known that's what it was I'd have just shared DS' chips and got something from elsewhere for myself

BakedAlaskaInMyTummy · 01/12/2025 22:06

The key with Five Guys is to skip most of the food (except maybe the chips) and go for a milkshake. They are to die for!

AutisticAndMore · 01/12/2025 22:07

I’m surprised that so few people seemingly enquire about what they are going to eat? Don’t you want to know if it’s a vegetable or faux meat based burger and if it’s spicy or not and know what it contains even if you don’t have any allergies because you may not care for the ingredients?

They’re not a brand known for its inclusivity when they cook their chips in peanut oil.

Oakcupboard · 01/12/2025 22:10

I actually love it and prefer it to an actual veggie burger, it is expensive though. It’s more of a grilled cheese, when I was in Florida during the summer quite a few burger places offered similar

nomas · 01/12/2025 22:11

I wasn’t that impressed by the Five Guys beef burger, it tasted like a Big Mac.

If you want a similar experience, get the Burger King vegan whopper or McDonalds McPlant burger.

But their fries taste good, it is kind of like their USP.

AliceTheBat · 01/12/2025 22:19

It's DS' favourite and we don't live anywhere near one so it was his choice as a treat whilst on a shopping trip.

I didn't enquire because generally speaking, in a burger restaurant, something printed next to all the other burger options but labelled "veggie" tends to mean a veggie/vegan patty. I don't think I've ever been anywhere that this is not the case.

This was the first time I've been to Five Guys since becoming veggie - I wont make the same mistake twice!

Down in Sussex there's a burger chain called Uncle Sams, they've always done a veggie sandwich like that, 30+ years and they're popular, mind you, they are packed full of salad, not just limp leaf or two.
Never been to 5 guys other than to watch my other half eat his meat burger (am vegetarian), and to pinch a few peanuts. Tbh, I hate fake meat but I don't think I'd spend £7 on a scrap of salad in a bun.

I often just have fries. They give so many that it’s a meal on its own.

TheChosenTwo · 01/12/2025 22:26

£7 for limp lettuce and a fake cheese slice in a bun sounds sad!

I like their burgers but actually I’m not that fussed on their chips, they always seem a bit ‘dry’ and overcooked to me but the dc like a 5 guys so if we’re out shopping and come across one I don’t mind stopping for a quick lunch there. None of us are veggie though, I’d not be going if that was the option if I was.

Sober23 · 01/12/2025 22:29

They do a kids meal which i always get now as it's so overpriced. Do love a 5 guys burger meal!

Yes but even if it’s vegetarian don’t you want to know what the ingredients and flavourings are, especially if you don’t like peppers and onion?

Sorry that you were disappointed though. I like Five Guys well enough but it is pretty expensive and even more so for a shit sandwich with barely any filling so I wouldn’t be impressed either.
