Five Guys. Wtaf?!

I went there earlier DS ordered a cheeseburger and fries, I ordered a "veggie sandwich" with cheese. I was asked what toppings I wanted and for the veggie sandwich I asked for lettuce, tomato and mayo.

I couldn't fucking believe it when I took a bite and that's literally all that was in it - a plastic cheese slice, a bit of lettuce and one slice of tomato.

It cost me nearly £7?!

Was I unreasonable to think that in a burger restaurant, I would receive a veggie/plant based patty, given that it's beside the other normal burger items on the menu? I thought maybe they'd just forgotten to add the patty to it but when I googled, it is literally supposed to be veg on a roll.

AIBU to think this is an absolute rip?

YANBU. I couldn’t believe how badly they cater for anyone other than beef eaters when I first went there. Unfortunately, my son loves their burgers and it’s his treat of choice. The chips are lovely though, so chips and a shake for me and as many free peanuts as I can guzzle.

fruitbrewhaha · 01/12/2025 22:36

I don’t eat meat either but I did understand their menu and that the veggie option is just without the burger. It’s shite.

Thewhywhybird · 01/12/2025 22:40

I don't know what's wrong with me but I thought this was going to be a thread about someone with five blokes on the go .. 🤔 😂

It looks as though you should have had this:

Cheese Veggie Sandwich
Freshly grilled onions, mushrooms and green peppers layered with lettuce, tomatoes and slices of American-style cheese on a soft, toasted sesame seed bun.

I haven’t RTFT but American style cheese will be what she got, plastic cheese.

WonderfulSmith · 01/12/2025 22:46

There is no excuse. The likes of McDonalds have made vegetarian burgers for years.

It’s so annoying when there is no vegetarian option. So many places like pubs and restaurants will say that they don’t get the call for it but that’s because vegetarians check the menu options before they go anywhere. Often the only choice is the fucking risotto because that does for all the gluten free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian options.

Hons123 · 01/12/2025 22:49

It is such a con - very much like ripping the customer off with un-peeled potatoes for chips, with all the shite in the "skins". Just because LA celebrities are supposed to 'love it'?

fiorentina · 01/12/2025 22:50

I like it as it’s essentially actual vegetables rather than a fake meat burger. I always have all the veg in the bun. Not that I go often but it’s better than many veggie options.

Cocorico22 · 01/12/2025 22:52

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 01/12/2025 22:01

Isn't that supposed to have mushrooms, onions and peppers on as well as salad?

Yes in its true form it’s totally glorious! Shame and sounds like OP’s local five guys needs to get their quality control in order

lenswoes · 01/12/2025 23:00

I've been to Five Guys once. I think they are very overpriced for what they are. I'm surprised they manage to stay in business. There is one near to me that opened recently. It's always half-empty when I go past. There is a Mcdonalds that is literally across the road from it which is always chocker.

overthinking4321 · 01/12/2025 23:01

Yes I was amazed when this happened with me and I genuinely thought they’d forgotten the veggie burger … but they hadn’t. So I haven’t been back since

wp65 · 01/12/2025 23:05

I had this too. Fuck five guys.

Happyjoe · 01/12/2025 22:22

Down in Sussex there's a burger chain called Uncle Sams, they've always done a veggie sandwich like that, 30+ years and they're popular, mind you, they are packed full of salad, not just limp leaf or two.
Never been to 5 guys other than to watch my other half eat his meat burger (am vegetarian), and to pinch a few peanuts. Tbh, I hate fake meat but I don't think I'd spend £7 on a scrap of salad in a bun.

I heart Uncle Sams!!

Schoolchoicesucks · 01/12/2025 23:16

Yep, it's just "all" of the toppings you can get on a burger but with nothing to replace the burger. Really shite. Unfortunately the kids love five guys. The chips are good at least. I either just eat chips now or make sure I can eat elsewhere.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 01/12/2025 23:36

That sounds crap! I googled out of interest and found out

Cross-contamination:
All cooked vegetables are prepared on the same grill as the meat, which may not be suitable for those avoiding cross-contamination

So most vegans and vegetarians wouldn’t want to eat it anyway.

Florally · 01/12/2025 23:40

I hate Five Guys. I hadn’t been before or knew anything about it and went into the one near South Kensington station as my kids were keen… no clue there would be peanuts everywhere. I have a really severe allergy and I immediately reacted. On tables, on the stairs… bags of them all over the place.

Such a dangerous fast food restaurant. Honestly, couldn’t believe it.

ktopfwcv · 01/12/2025 23:50

AutisticAndMore · 01/12/2025 22:07

I’m surprised that so few people seemingly enquire about what they are going to eat? Don’t you want to know if it’s a vegetable or faux meat based burger and if it’s spicy or not and know what it contains even if you don’t have any allergies because you may not care for the ingredients?

This. But then I'm autistic too. I have to study the ingredients.

Mayflower282 · 01/12/2025 23:53

Be careful if you have nut allergy, their fries are fried in peanut oil!! They really need to step up their game.

StruggleFlourish · 01/12/2025 23:55

AliceTheBat · 01/12/2025 22:19

It's DS' favourite and we don't live anywhere near one so it was his choice as a treat whilst on a shopping trip.

I didn't enquire because generally speaking, in a burger restaurant, something printed next to all the other burger options but labelled "veggie" tends to mean a veggie/vegan patty. I don't think I've ever been anywhere that this is not the case.

This was the first time I've been to Five Guys since becoming veggie - I wont make the same mistake twice!

I had the same experience. I have never been in a five guys before, it was around 5:00 p.m., we had had a little something to eat earlier in the day, (I don't usually eat lunch) So I wasn't super hungry, so I just ordered a veggie sandwich and I have never in my entire life, of all the places I've ever eaten in, which is a lot, ever ordered a veggie sandwich that was literally just a few vegetables on a bun with nothing in between. Anytime you see anything that says veggie sandwich, it usually means some sort of either a soy patty or vegetable patty and I thought okay fine a vegetable patty is fine with me. I wasn't super hungry and I thought that would be sufficient.
My partner ordered a milkshake, some double burger, and fries. And when we got our order, he was stuffed to the point of uncomfortable, and I was sadly starving having just eaten a few vegetables on a bun. And no, partner did not offer to share his shake or burger or fries, and no, I didn't bother going up to order something else when I saw how pathetic my dinner was going to be, I ate a whole bunch of the free peanuts and thought oh well. Lesson learned.
And I haven't been to one since, although I will admit, the food, (though very expensive,) smelled fantastic.

Wintertime2025 · 01/12/2025 23:57

Completely overrated and has gone further down hill recently

LJ125 · 01/12/2025 23:58

I’m veggie and this is my favourite veggie ‘burger’ of all of the fast food places! It really needs the mushrooms, onions and peppers though as those are the substantial main event - they are so delicious mixed in with the melty cheese. If you’ve removed those then it does sound quite disappointing!

JalapenoSlices · 01/12/2025 23:58

My kids wanted to try this place but we don’t eat beef was surprised to see not even a chicken option already knew about the veggie burger when I checked the menu it looked rubbish so haven’t bothered. Every burger place I’ve known has sold a chicken burger!

Happyjoe · 01/12/2025 23:59

louderthan · 01/12/2025 23:05

I heart Uncle Sams!!

Me too! Lol. I worked in the Brighton (Montpellier) and Burgess Hill ones while I was at 6th form. Darn place gave me a fondness for mayo and the gazillion calories a spoonful that it is!

Dullday · 02/12/2025 00:00

5 Guys are rank. Don't order the grilled cheese, it's just squashed mush. They try to justify the ridiculous prices by filling your bag with chips (which then drip grease everywhere) and there's too many so they just get binned. And there is no veggie option, the veggie sandwich with its slimy mushrooms is awful.
The toilets are filthy, piss and pubes all over the seats.
It's a really low bar when you think McDs is better.

HeyThereDelila · 02/12/2025 00:03

YANBU. Five Guys is an overrated rip off.

JohnTheRevelator · 02/12/2025 00:06

Yep! I discovered this a couple of years ago.
