Five Guys. Wtaf?!

I went there earlier DS ordered a cheeseburger and fries, I ordered a "veggie sandwich" with cheese. I was asked what toppings I wanted and for the veggie sandwich I asked for lettuce, tomato and mayo.

I couldn't fucking believe it when I took a bite and that's literally all that was in it - a plastic cheese slice, a bit of lettuce and one slice of tomato.

It cost me nearly £7?!

Was I unreasonable to think that in a burger restaurant, I would receive a veggie/plant based patty, given that it's beside the other normal burger items on the menu? I thought maybe they'd just forgotten to add the patty to it but when I googled, it is literally supposed to be veg on a roll.

AIBU to think this is an absolute rip?

It’s a burger chain. You’re vegetarian. It’s not for you.

Every other burger chain manages to do vegetarian burgers.

What restaurants are for vegetarians then?

It is questionable how much people care about “animal welfare” as the root of their vegetarianism if they’re eating food “vegetarian food” from places which serve meat and have wholesale farming and slaughterhouses though, no?

Edited

O bog off. Easily available, good quality veggie options makes it easier for anyone to eat less meat which is overall better for animals. Plus I can't imagine any veggies manage to never use a supermarket or buy soley brands which do veggie food (due to so many being owned by Unilever or other massive companies)

Mama2many73 · 02/12/2025 07:42

We dont ho often but I love the fact I van choose what I want on (love mushrooms) but our ds always chooses the grilled cheese sandwich with nothing else. He says they're gorgeous.
But....what's this about their peanuts?? Never seen peanuts at 5guys?!

SusanChurchouse · 02/12/2025 07:43

I’ve never been in a Five Guys. The name and the whole branding just screams ‘male under 30’ to me, which I think is the point. I am neither.

It’s not hard to do a vegetarian patty. Most places keep them frozen so young don’t even need a lot of people ordering them to make it workable. I don’t mind if it’s fake meat, veggies, or beans: it’s not like I’m going to a fast food restaurant to be healthy. I also know plenty of meat eaters who loved the Burger King Bean burger.

I miss bean burgers. They have all been replaced with fake meat now. I’d much sooner have a bean burger.

You mean like supermarkets and shops?

Moonlightfrog · 02/12/2025 08:10

Five guys is hugely expensive. I do like their burgers but they are way over priced. Dd also will only eat the ‘toasted cheese’ which is basically a burger bun with a melted plastic cheese slice in it 😬, I refuse to pay £7 for bread and cheese. It’s then £6 (I think) for a milkshake.

we rarely go there unless one of the dc asks to go for their birthday.

Yes. Vegetarians have to sit in a corner and not go to any single shop ever that sells any kind of meat or animal products.

Ah. Silly me! I've been doing it wrong since 1993.

Londontown12 · 02/12/2025 08:22

5 guys is the most overrated place !
I had a burger once never again it was disgusting 😞 lumpy tasteless and undercooked and the fries horrible !
Milkshake thou Good 👍

Summerunlover · 02/12/2025 08:34

What I would have been raging! Can’t believe they don’t have. Veggie option

Soontobe60 · 02/12/2025 08:41

londongirl12 · 01/12/2025 22:08

They’re not a brand known for its inclusivity when they cook their chips in peanut oil.

That’s like saying Nando’s isn’t inclusive as they serve chicken 😂

The problem is with the cooking. There would need to be a completely separate grill plate to avoid cross contamination. That’s why lots of places don’t actually do veggie burgers. (If you go to a non chain burger place, the likelihood is that veggie burgers are cooked on the same grill as meat burgers)

LupinLou · 02/12/2025 08:49

It's on the FAQ

I like five guys as their fries are gluten free and can get a burger in a lettuce wrap.

To be clear, I'm not that bothered if a place doesn't cater for me as a vegetarian - if their menu had been clear (there was no description) I just wouldn't have ordered it.

I didn't ask to remove the ingredients, I asked for the veggie sandwich with lettuce tomato and mayo, in the same way I would have ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo - adding toppings to what I assumed was a vegetarian burger patty.

My complaint is the disingenuous way this item is offered, and the price for what it is!

You ordered a "veggie sandwich" and literally got a sandwich with vegetables in it. The ones you asked for. Disingenuous? Nah.

Bjorkdidit · 02/12/2025 09:13

I've never eaten at Five Guys because I don't like burgers but it surprises me that they don't even sell a token vegetarian option, even if it is a bit crap. Veggie burgers, whether Beyond style or bean burgers are ubiquitous these days, except at Five Guys it seems.

I suppose you could have just had chips if you'd have known. I hate it when menus aren't clear about what you're getting or how the meal deal works (sometimes it isn't clear whether the extras are included or chargeable so they offer you X, Y and Z and you say yes and it ends up costing loads more than you expected). But I expect that's deliberate so people spend more.

What if it was a vegetable sandwich with lettuce leaves rather than a bun? It’s a vegetable sandwich so what’s the problem?

I think it is a fair assumption that a vegetable sandwich in a burger place would include some kind of vegetarian burger, just like it’s a fair assumption that it would include some kind of a bun.

Frustratingly, the Five Guys is directly across from a Wagamama's and I've been dying to try there.
There were dozens of other places I could have gone but for convenience decided to stick with DS' choice.

I'm not sure what the staff thought I was asking to add toppings to if they didn't even serve a "base" to the sandwich.

If they'd served me the mushroom/pepper/onion thing with my chosen toppings I could accept it and would have picked out the bits I didn't like, but who the fuck orders a topping sandwich?

Why assume? Just ask them. I've been in Five Guys a few times and they were really helpful.

Or I guess come on a forum and complain about how it's the restaurants fault that the world doesn't magically rearrange itself to be as one expects.

(Btw if you're gluten free they will in fact give you a burger in lettuce leaves rather than a bun, you find these things out by asking)

That’s a point. What are they ‘topping’? If there is no burger then there is nothing to top.

I don’t think that expecting a burger in a burger joint is some kind of magical thinking.

Adding toppings to the bun.

To be clear, I don't think it's a good burger, I also think it's overpriced, but I thought about all their burgers, I'm just saying that people need to take responsibility for their own mistakes.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/12/2025 09:58

Try being coeliac. My (overcooked tasteless)burger came in lettuce leaves. Hasn't even been dried so lots of extra yummy water in it.

Cornflakegirl7 · 02/12/2025 10:30

There's a burger chain called 'The Beefy Boys' that does 3 or 4 different veggie patties. Me being vegan ordered 'the leafy boy' sans cheese, which I wasn't particularly happy with but partner really wanted to go there so I can suck it up for one meal. I still wasn't happy with a mushroom sandwich however.

I did leave them a crappy review. NOT because of them not providing a decent vegan option. I had read the menu and made peace with that, but because of the fact it tasted very strongly of beef. I couldn't eat it. It was also soggy as hell, I had to eat it with a fork, fine-but it was so soggy that the bread was basically mush, and the veg toppings were all sloppy.

I nibbled on my partner's chips and got a Gregg's sausage roll on the way home.

When they responded to me, they said that the reason they didn't offer a vegan burger option was that they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't haev made contact with meat on the grill, but that they had no idea how my mushroom 'patty' tasted of beef as they use a separate grill for it.

Now is it me, or does that make no sense whatsoever?

As for five guys, they are definitely behind the times. I don't think I know of anywhere else (burger place, fast food, restaurant, pub) that doesn't have SOME sort of option for a vegetarian burger, rather than just taking the burger out altogether.
