Five Guys. Wtaf?!

I went there earlier DS ordered a cheeseburger and fries, I ordered a "veggie sandwich" with cheese. I was asked what toppings I wanted and for the veggie sandwich I asked for lettuce, tomato and mayo.

I couldn't fucking believe it when I took a bite and that's literally all that was in it - a plastic cheese slice, a bit of lettuce and one slice of tomato.

It cost me nearly £7?!

Was I unreasonable to think that in a burger restaurant, I would receive a veggie/plant based patty, given that it's beside the other normal burger items on the menu? I thought maybe they'd just forgotten to add the patty to it but when I googled, it is literally supposed to be veg on a roll.

AIBU to think this is an absolute rip?

It’s a burger chain. You’re vegetarian. It’s not for you.

oviraptor21 · 02/12/2025 00:13

Yep. Me too. Not been back since. As PP says - McDs being better shows how low 5 Guys are!

Derbee · 02/12/2025 00:15

I love the Five Guys veggie sandwich! Much prefer it than any veg patty. Mushrooms, green peppers, lettuce, tomato, fried onion, raw onion, jalapeños, pickles, relish, mayo and mustard. So so good.

It’s not their fault that you removed most of the ingredients, and took veggie sandwich to mean vegetarian burger alternative. The chips are amazing, and the peanuts are a nice touch. YABVU

There are pretty decent veggie burgers available at many burger places. Also chicken burgers. Burgers don't have to be beef.

Plenty of burger chains do nice veggie burgers.

paristotokyo · 02/12/2025 00:16

This happpened to me too so I did chuckle when reading this thread 😂 it’s pretty abysmal for the money you pay. The really should included a veggie pattie of some sort.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I thought this was going to be a thread about someone with five blokes on the go .. 🤔 😂

Ha me too! But that might be because I've never in my life heard of the place! As I was reading I kept thinking, but where do 5 guys fit into this story 😆

It is questionable how much people care about “animal welfare” as the root of their vegetarianism if they’re eating food “vegetarian food” from places which serve meat and have wholesale farming and slaughterhouses though, no?

WearyAuldWumman · 02/12/2025 00:19

I would have expected a bean burger or the like.

Lurleene · 02/12/2025 00:20

This happened to me too - about 10 years ago. I put it down to it being a brand new branch and presumed the staff had been poorly trained. Have never been there since and thought I'd been unlucky.

I didn't question it at the time as my DS had taken me for a Mother's Day 'treat', bless him.

blastfurnace · 02/12/2025 00:20

You might have thought that a staff member would have pointed out to you that ordering a veggie sandwich without the mushrooms, peppers and onion was omitting the substance of the meal - it’s like ordering a burger without a patty.

Ir reminds me of the time I got into an argument with a staff member in McDonalds who insisted that when I ordered a “plain cheeseburger” that he was correct to give me a bun and patty with no cheese.

ukvisitor · 02/12/2025 01:38

Yes, this annoyed me recently! I live in a country without Five Guys but love it as a holiday treat, so on my birthday trip to the UK I was hoping to grab a burger. As the friend I was with is vegetarian, I checked the menu in advance and I'm glad I did so! The lack of a good veggie option is abysmal. My friend already dislikes the change so many places have made from a classic vegetable or bean burger to imitation meat, and I was hoping as Five Guys are typically pretty high quality as far as fast food goes that she'd be able to get a nice veggie burger for once!

I didn't even bring it up in the end, as it felt like it would be somewhat insulting to suggest. We found a lovely little Italian place instead, and I'll wait and go to Five Guys sometime next year.

GaIadriel · 02/12/2025 01:51

They may actually have made a mistake. I've twice had them serve me a burger with no patty. Just a bun with salad wrapped up in foil. 😂

canuckup · 02/12/2025 02:34

Not sure about the UK one but in Canada you have to have the double patty

I asked them for just one but they wouldn't let me

Confused
RandomUsernameHere · 02/12/2025 03:04

YANBU. I also think the food there generally is really overpriced for what it is.

To be clear, I'm not that bothered if a place doesn't cater for me as a vegetarian - if their menu had been clear (there was no description) I just wouldn't have ordered it.

I didn't ask to remove the ingredients, I asked for the veggie sandwich with lettuce tomato and mayo, in the same way I would have ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo - adding toppings to what I assumed was a vegetarian burger patty.

My complaint is the disingenuous way this item is offered, and the price for what it is!

No it’s not a mistake. Their version of ‘vegetarian burger’ means no patty. Just the salad and the bun. Which is unusual hence why we’ve all made the same mistake ordering thinking we’d get a veggie patty of some sort 😂

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/12/2025 04:30

You're expected to know how Five Guys works - they have a very limited menu, burgers, buns, hotdogs, toppings, fries, shakes.

The veggie sandwich is therefore a combination of their toppings on a bun, without the burger. You asked for the combination of toppings you got...

How you are meant to know that before you go... I guess they expect you to have looked at their website first, something I suspect the younger gens do routinely and the rest of us wouldn't think a restaurant would need prior research!

To be fair to them though, it isn't called a veggie burger and they do not mention a veggie burger or patty anywhere, as they don't offer one. Everywhere else that does, does make mention of it, its ingredients and whether its officially vegetarian/vegan or just 'meat free' but potentially cooked on the same grill as meat.

Linenpickle · 02/12/2025 06:16

If you go to a vegetarian restaurant, do they serve a steak or similar option for non vegetarians? No. So why should five guys? All their food is fresh and having plant food would go to waste.

Linenpickle · 02/12/2025 06:16

You should have had their grilled cheese…. Yummy!!!

TFImBackIn · 01/12/2025 22:00

It looks as though you should have had this:

Cheese Veggie Sandwich
Freshly grilled onions, mushrooms and green peppers layered with lettuce, tomatoes and slices of American-style cheese on a soft, toasted sesame seed bun.

I checked out at ‘American style cheese’ ….. orange plastic tasteless slices of extruded matter

Even they didn’t specifically explain that there was no patty, did they not check at all that was all you wanted?

Given you can get an unlimited array of toppings on a Five Guys burger it is really just ordering a burger without the patty which feels like making absolutely zero effort to cater to vegetarians.

One of my children is a Five Guys fan, the other is veggie and the lack of a decent veggie offering stops us going, we’d probably be regular customers otherwise.

Mostardently11 · 02/12/2025 06:36

I'm vegetarian and and love the veggie cheese sandwich. It makes a nice change from a veggie burger and can actually be quite substantial if you go for the mushrooms, peppers, onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and jalapenos with the cheese and sauces But I agree it would be very disappointing with only the ingredients you ordered!

THisbackwithavengeance · 02/12/2025 06:43

YABU to eat in Five Guys.
