This is madness. Can the last taxpayer in the UK please close the door behind them.

Oh i dunno A lot of parents on here seem to be happy to leave the children they claim to love to be cared for by someone they have no respect for or actively despise.

It’s called working to provide for your family. It’s not a new concept

You’d still need childcare evenings/weekends. I’m guessing your friends weren’t single mothers?

Or have partners who don't work the standard 9-5 and aren't back in time for evening work.

Or she could work as part of a holiday club or clean the mould off /report damp to the landlord to get it sorted.Or become a sit in nanny over the holidays. Nothing in life is easy and there are things she could do in the 16 weeks she has free. Sh change tac and get a different full time job. She has this choice

Edited

To be fair, she is as entitled to 5.6 of those weeks off as any other worker.

Hmm...maybe we should value what SAH/part time work parents do as much as we value work outside the home.

Eleanor Rathbone's work on the Mother's Allowance was a long time ago but imo still relevant.

I don't like Mary Harrington much but this article summarises the issues with Eleanor Rathbone well.

As I said you can do that but you should expect to pay for that yourself

Absolutely but if her living conditions are that bad wouldn’t you do what you could to try to improve it?

Isn't that exactly what she is doing by going to college and working towards full time employment as a TA?

It takes time and doesn't happen overnight.

Well she needs to report the landlord to the council because they have powers to deal with rogue landlords

I did say previously that it was excellent she was doing this to improve her situation.

Where? In her damp tiny flat with black mould all over the walls and a few sticks of furniture, no equipment, no TV, in an area where most local people wouldn’t even venture into? I very much doubt that people would be biting her hand off!

I really hope this doesn’t come across as a “homeless people should just get a job” type comment, but is there a reason she is just leaving the black mould on the walls and not treating it?

Penguinsandspaniels · 01/12/2025 16:09

x2boys · 01/12/2025 11:13

I find that extremely surprising
My now 19 year old had acute necrotising pancreatitus when he was 16 he also doesn't have a pancreas as it was completely destroyed, hes now insulin dependent diabetic and also has to take creon with his food to digest it he doesn't meet the criteria for PIP though, his wasent due to drinking it was idiopathic
.

Maybe ex gets it as now is insulin diabetic ? I don’t know

and yes takes creon before food - that’s if he bothers /remeembers /wants to take

obv if he doesn’t then he’s sick or poos

but jabbing once a day doesn’t stop him from working iyswim

but ex dh could get a part time job or a few fours a day or 2/3 days a week but he isn’t made to due to being on lwcra

and that annoys me as much as cms saying pay £27.50 a month as he’s not working

sorry to hear about your son and such a young age

I've actually been a TA myself! Didn't claim any benefits but I was shocked at the number who didn't have school age children, they were all receiving UC - if you get your housing paid for and benefits it a very desirable job!

Interesting observation from someone who has been one.

I think being a TA is very respected job and where I live there are hardly any vacancies for them. They are snapped up.

She is, it just comes back! We’ve redecorated with anti-fungal paint, and it’s back within a month. She’s constantly scrubbing but the walls never dry out. The flat needs repointing, water is getting in every time it rains. The landlord refuses to do it. She can’t rock the boat too much because she’s scared of getting an eviction notice. If she ended up homeless she’d have to go into temporary accommodation in another city, she’d lose her job and the kids wouldn’t be able to stay in their schools. It’s just an awful position for renters these days.

When home owners post on here that they have a mould problem they are told it must be structural When social housing tenants post about the same thing they are told its because they are drying washing indoors or breathing too much.

We keep getting told to leave the mold on DD's wall. The LL is apparently responsible for cleaning it, and they should shoulder the expense of the specialist cleaning supplies needed to properly and safely kill and remove it. They also need to be able to see how bad it gets, and they cannot do that if we are cleaning it every day.

Why are we paying rent for people but not mortgages. Honest question.

Because an owned home is seems as a future asset. Rental accommodation isn’t.

My DS is a School Business Manager in a secondary school. They can recruit L2s but struggle to recruit L3s, and they always have unfilled vacancies.

My friend works in her dd’s primary school. She does 121 with a little boy with autism who regularly beats the shit out of her. She’s always covered in bruises/bite marks, but she loves her job. I wouldn’t want to do it!

Can she not have an off the record discussion with the local council about it because the landlord should not be getting away with this

Honestly, I’m not just putting up obstacles but the council wouldn’t be interested. There are probably tens of thousands of people in this city in the same boat. Anyone who kicks up a fuss gets served notice. The council aren’t interested until you’re actually homeless now. That’s the impact of austerity.

Unfortunately this is what rogue landlords rely on their tenants keeping quiet for fear of eviction and it’s wrong on every level. Do they have a social
worker or any advocate given their circumstances? ( am presuming they are Ukrainian).
