This is madness. Can the last taxpayer in the UK please close the door behind them.

Why are we paying rent for people but not mortgages. Honest question.

They are. The landlord's mortgage.
I don't know the exact details, but UC will pay towards mortgage interest after a few months of claiming, and I believe it is a loan. Why should the government be paying off your asset?

Flibbertyfloo · 01/12/2025 00:11

Including disability benefits is odd. I'm a very high earner and I receive full PIP, and before that DLA. I have done since I was a child due to a severe life-long disability. I use it to pay for the additional costs of my disability. It's not means tested.

Having said that, I do not agree with removing the two child cap. All my friends and family are in work,, and have all made decisions on the size of their families based on finances. I don't see why it should be different for those on benefits.

x12 · 01/12/2025 00:10

@Whywhywhyyyy because the owners end up with an asset.

We shouldn’t spend all that benefit money on housing & build more social housing but that’s a separate point.

Yes but private rentals also paying for someone’s asset.

PP above saying they get 400. I assume because homeowner. What are benefits for? Why are they not getting a housing allowance but someone living in rent is. Makes no sense.

We’ll all be worse off because there is no strategy for growth or investment or business.

When everyone loses their jobs because Labour’s moronic tax-anything-that-moves policy means that businesses go down the pan or start laying people off, it might eventually dawn on them where all the money for generous benefits and the NHS etc actually originates from. Yes evil capitalism.

So it would make sense to make us a prosperous trading nation. But no. This is Labour. Spend spend spend. Trillions and billions in more debt to potentially hostile nations who have us by the short and curlies.

What a Colossal
lack of planning and forward thinking that Labour are so good at.

So far it’s been the only thing they are good at

A lot of people on benefits are working. Why do non of the posters whinging about benefits ever criticise the companies paying shit wages that need to be topped up by benefits?

It’s a short term loan with interest added
It means you have to pay it back

Rent paid through benefits with no limit on time isn’t a loan. You don’t have to pay it back

The two are completely different

Yes, sorry I maybe confused it a little.
SMI is a loan.
Rent is not a loan.

They get their rent paid because rents have rocketed and they are not affordable without some help in the form of benefits.

midsummabreak · 01/12/2025 00:23

AutumnAllTheWay · 30/11/2025 23:43

Go on benefits then! Be stupid not to, surely?

Except you wont because saying people on benefits are better off than workers on moderate wages is crap.

We have a three child household, and earn just a bit too much to claim.

Yes we struggle.

No, I dont begrudge a household earning less than us to claim a bit to top up low wages.

This is what the vast majority of uc claimants claim for. To be able to go to work and fill all the lower paid positions, you know, shop workers,.cleaners, teaching assistants and the like. Orange they should just get their pittance for working and then go home to a tent? Would that suit better?

Good golly, how gullible some are to keep going on about ridiculous cases dredged up to keep us attacking each other while the billionaires get richer.

Absolutely agree

All housing has rocketed. How is PP paying her roof over her head on £400 a month. And other people get thousands for housing.

It’s a bloody disgrace.

Minty25 · 01/12/2025 00:28

bodyofproof · 01/12/2025 00:07

I’m claiming UC currently as I lost my job
£400 a month doesn’t go far paying bills

Yes benefits are awfully low for anyone on UC. I don't know how people live on that. I hope you find something else soon.

She probably isn't. She wont get help with the interest on her mortgage for 3 months. People have lost their houses when on UC, especially when they are no longer able to work.
But UC is not there to pay off your asset. Paying off private landlords asset is a whole different thing, and is more about the lack of affordable and social housing.
It is all a mess.

Maybe they own their house outright and don't have any housing costs?

Are they all working full time, or 15 hours per week to claim maximum benefits?
I suspect the latter when they quote ‘working in receipt of benefits’ figures.

That too. I certainly know a couple of people that claim UC but own their homes outright. No mortgage.

They will be people with children. If you don't have kids, you are expected to work full time.

Well I think it’s unfair. Benefits in my eyes should be a safety net. For unemployment, illness, misfortune etc.

You should be treated equally and not penalised for trying to stand on your own two feet nor awarded more for sitting in rent and expecting gov to pay for it forever.

I don’t know what the answer is. Cut rent from UC, Or add mortgages. Or just give a flat rate of x money to be used for whatever. But the current system is not acceptable.

Because some people love nothing more than talking about "workers" and "benefit claimants" as if they are mutually exclusive things.

Also, after looking at the link posted by the OP, every single one of their examples of working families would actually also be eligible to claim a significant amount of UC on top of their wages 😂 In most cases both families would end up receiving roughly the same amount whether that is income + benefits or benefits alone. I'm sure the parents and indeed the children solely claiming benefits with all the disabled elements (seeing as the ones who published these figures have added every payment they can to beef up the benefit amounts) in these families would actually rather have good health.

Also, unemployed parents with multiple children and not receiving LCWRA/disabled child element etc would be subject to the overall benefit cap anyway so wouldn't receive more than £22,020 per year outside Greater London or £25,320 inside it.

Livelovebehappy · 01/12/2025 00:41

I just can’t get my head around the fact that Reeves based all this on lies anyway - there is no, nor has there ever been, a huge black hole deficit. So most of her targeting of average families is due to appeasing the rabid frothing at the mouth lefties on her back benches. So was just done out of spite. Totally unnecessary.

If you cut rent, then how will people who do not own their homes have a roof over their head?
If you pay for people's mortgages, then why would anyone work when the government can just literally buy them a house? That they can sell, or pass to their children.

Home owners are not being penalised. They can get help with the interest, which is that will keep the bank off their back. Long term claimants such as those unable to work can and do lose their houses. But most people with a mortgage claim UC when in-between jobs and end up back on their feet again. Benefits are not a reward for doing "the right thing" such as buying a home, they are a safety net.

People who rent are not doing it on purpose to claim benefits. They are people who can not afford to buy. Even if you have your rent paid, if you are renting in the private sector, you are not in secure housing.

That’s a lot of words. The reality of it is PP is not being given any help with housing. Someone who rents is. That’s unfair.

The easiest way is to remove housing element and just pay a flat rate UC to be spent as the person wishes.

She will get help with housing but in the form of help with her mortgage interest, if she has a mortgage. Some people own outright.

Sorry it is a lot of words. Shall I get my crayons out?
