I think it is . Why make this decision at a time when anti semitism is increasing?

Unfortunately, there is indeed increased antisemitism across Europe but that doesn't mean we can't criticise Israel - is it beyond reproach?

If Jewish people in Europe support the current Netanyahu government then yes they can be held responsible for Gaza. Many young European Jews do military service in Israel, often in the Occupied Territories - is that OK?

This sounds as if you are condoning the antisemitism?
Are you honestly suggesting Jewish people in Europe have to go around publicly disavowing Netanyahu- otherwise they are fair game for acts of violence???
Would you expect all Russians around the world to be vulnerable to attack because of Putin / all Americans to be vulnerable to attack by Trump haters unless they publicly denounce Trump ?

It is antisemitic, no ifs or buts please. The erasure of the Irish Jewish community and their contribution to Irish life is well underway. As an Irish citizen I am deeply concerned at how antisemitic Ireland is. It seems to me to be a perfect storm of several things:

  1. A hangover from Catholic antisemitism
  2. The unhistorical and inaccurate conflation of Irish insuregency with the Palestinian/Israeli conflict
  3. A weird cultural/national belief that we are the best and most moral people in the world.
  4. Left-wing antisemtism which is baked into Sinn Fein/IRA politics.

💯

The number of Irish Jews has halved since the Second World War. I remember being in university with a few but all have left Ireland now and built lives in the UK and the US.

So if we feel so strongly about Palestine, why be such a strong trading partner with Israel - the 6th greatest importer on Israeli goods no less? Because we are hypocrites and won’t meddle with the lucrative US trading partnership. We’d prefer to dishonour a dead Irish Jew’s name, a fluent Irish speaker who rose to be head of a brand new country borne of the pain of the Holocaust.

Ireland has always seemed to have a problem with antisemitism. I assume the dominance of the Catholic Church goes some way to explain it.

That makes a lot of sense.

Spain is another country who have always seemed to have a problem with antisemitism and who too, were dominated by the Catholic Church in much the same way as Ireland.

They changed it to Hind Rijab park

Fitting tribute to an innocent child brutally slain 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

Seriously?

I don’t imagine Hind had any connection to Dublin or Ireland whatsoever.

I can’t imagine people being happy with that.

Who on earth made that decision?

Jewishcraic · 30/11/2025 16:25

I am horrified by the actions of the DCC but pleasantly surprised by the reactions of many Irish politicians.

I emailed all the DCC councillers and have received some nice replies.

There is a pretty small Jewish community in Ireland,* but the thing is, that particular park is right next door to the only Jewish school in Ireland. So it seems particularly unpleasant that small children coming to the playground or teens coming to play on the sports pitches or adjoining tennis courts are greeted by political demonstrations (happened a few times in the last 2 years) shouting from the river to the sea, or by the name of the park being changed. Pretty sure iirc swastikas have been daubed there recently as well.

I think the park being named after Chaim had a lot to do with his father, Rabbi Yitzchak Herzog, a pivotol figure in Irish nationalism and the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland.

*the original community mostly descended from Lithunain immigrants has greatly shrunk but numbers have recently been swelled by lots of Jewish immigrants from Israel, USA and many other countries working in the tech sector.

Tens of thousands of children have been killed in Syria, Yemen and Sudan...just to mention a few conflicts that are going on around the world. Could they not have named it after one of those children? Answers on a postcard please....

Herzog is not just a long-dead Jewish person though is he?

He left Ireland aged 18 and became Israel's president!

For some reason a park was named after him, and just as other 'great and the good' his history has been re-visited.

And what exactly about his history being revisited has caused you or others to believe that the park should no longer be named after him?

Or should parks no longer be named after Jews because of the current situation? Would you like all Jews to be cancelled? Or just this specific one?

Why?

Jewishcraic · 30/11/2025 16:47

Nobody has changed the parks name, yet.

There was an online petition and several demonstrations asking to change the name to Hind Rajib Park.

The DCC meeting tomorrow is to decide what to call it, I think.

But guessing the backlash against this will change things a bit.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Some people were posting as if it were a done deal.

Just had a Google. The petition to change it to Hind Rijab Park doesn’t seem to have much support - unsurprisingly.

There was also a suggestion to change it to Free Palestine Park.

It’s appalling the name of the park is to be changed, and deeply antisemitic, but if it must be changed, I do hope it is named something appropriate, with actual meaning to Dublin and the local community. People should not have such hardline views imposed on them in this way.

YourOnMute · 30/11/2025 17:01

Yes, my understanding is that this name change has been suggested, certainly not agreed upon.

JaneJeffer · 30/11/2025 17:21

Any excuse to paint the whole of Ireland as antisemitic on the actions of a few members of Dublin City Council

No - that’s not what most posters are saying. Many Irish people disagree with this proposal and think it’s an antisemitic proposal on behalf of DCC.
It’s heartening to hear many Irish people reject this sort of antisemitism.

SharonEllis · 30/11/2025 17:33

Of course its antisemitic. Herzog is long dead. To hold him responsible for things a current government of Israel is doing is obviously antisemitic and nonsensical. It erases a key part of Irish Jewish history.

It’s good to hear there’s plenty of pushback.
It’s an appalling proposal at a time when Jewish communities feel under attack.

I am firmly pro-Palestine and pro non-expansionist Israel, anti-Netanyahu and his evil, genocidal policies. I also completely oppose the proposal by DCC to rename this park. It's a tribute to a very renowned Irishman and, whether or not it made sense to name it after him in the first place given that he left here as a very young man, it would be 100% anti-Semitic to change it right here, right now. I can just imagine the type of frothing, intolerant, "be-kind" useless idiot of a councillor who would come up with such a batshit plan in the first place. I intend to contact the Council tomorrow to register my disapproval before they vote tomorrow evening.

AwfullyGood · 30/11/2025 17:41

I'm Irish and live relatively close to Herzog Park.

This proposal by some members of Dublin City Council does not reflect the opinion of the majority of people in Ireland who are strongly opposed to such a change.

The vast majority are disgusted by the proposal and there is huge opposition to it.

YourOnMute · 30/11/2025 17:44

The park is not being renamed. The council involved is not renaming it.
A proposal has been made to the Council to rename it - I'm not sure by which Councillor(s). The Council has to discuss proposals put before it and this will be discussed tomorrow I think. It would need approval to be renamed. It is not the case that the whole Council is in agreement or going ahead with this or that it is an action on behalf of the Council.

Sassy31 · 30/11/2025 17:45

Be interesting to know what Dublin cllr proposed this?
Sadly being an Irish person living in the Uk . Each time I go home the level of hate directed at the Jewish community makes me feel ill. Most of these people although well travelled , have never met a Jewish person.

BigGra · 30/11/2025 18:13

OpheliaIsntMad · 30/11/2025 08:42

Absolutely.
To change the name is to suggest Irish born Jews are somehow responsible for things that happen in other countries.
It must be deeply upsetting for Irish Jews.

agree. I am very Pro Palestine but am appalled at this proposal.
thankfully. I see the proposal has been withdrawal.

XWKD · 30/11/2025 18:45

If it is eventually changed at some stage in the future, I think Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog would be a good candidate name. He was Chaim's father, and I think had an interesting relationship with Ireland and the foundation of the State.

CircleSquared · 30/11/2025 18:54

Some of the comments here were really depressing but I’m pleased that currently 70% have voted YANBU. I especially appreciate the comments from those who are very pro-Palestine but still understand why this would be antisemitic.

AwfullyGood · 30/11/2025 18:58

It has now been confirmed offically that the proposal has been withdrawn.

They were not renaming it, there was to be a vote on it this week but that's been stopped now because of the antisemitism accusations
