To think your eyes/eyeballs aren’t self cleaning?

I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but me and DH were rocking about showering/cleaning and DH mentioned he doesn’t open his eyes in the shower much. I asked how he cleans his eyeballs and he looked confused. Turns out he doesn’t wash his eyeballs at all. He closes his eyes and washes his face but not his actual eyes?

AIBU to tell him his eyes don’t clean themselves and he needs to open his eyes and rinse them with the shower?

Ive always been taught to open my eyes under the shower and rinse my eyes because otherwise I would get conjunctivitis and infections because gunk builds up in them. Surely that makes sense! I can’t imagine not washing my eyes 😳

You are more likely to get eye infections from shower water.
There is a reason that opticians warn NEVER to put tap water near contact lenses. That's because it is full of nasty microbes which can cause serious damage.
Tears are perfectly balanced osmotically and pH wise to coat, clean and lubricate your eyeballs. They are also full of anti bacterial chemicals which protect your eyes from infection. Washing that off with skanky tap water is insane.

So your face is rarely cleaned? Why? Do you wash your body? If so, why not your face? 😕

I shower twice a day. I just don’t use any soap on my face. Not an intentional decision just how it is. It obviously gets wet in there. 🤔🤣. So I definitely don’t wash my eyeballs 🤣

Pinkosand · 29/11/2025 06:34

Is this a joke?

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 29/11/2025 07:20

Before anyone else posts long explanations from AI or Google, it's been established way upthread that OP is joking.

I’m actually often complimented on my eyes! I’ve had a few comments about how white the whites are.. maybe that why!

Do you use Daz? That’s good for whiter whites.

Love this thread, OP. You’ve given me such a good laugh.

Lucia573 · 29/11/2025 07:34

You should avoid getting too much shower water in your eyes as it has bacteria that can cause nasty infections, especially if you wear contacts. Advice from optometrist.

Not bacteria - amoeba which antibacterial medication doesn’t kill so can be very difficult to get rid of.

I used to, but I’ve been getting many more compliments since switching to vanish oxi-action. Really good for stain removal in the very corners where the shower might not always reach.

I’ve never once had an eye infection or conjunctivitis while DH has, it might be controversial maybe but it obviously works.

Errrr, I have never washed my eyeballs and yet I’ve never had eye infections and that proves what exactly? In the past I have used OTC saline solutions to clean my eyes but as far as I am aware, showers don’t dispense saline.

Your H is right, the water from your shower going into your eyes would likely cause more issues. The fluid around your eyeballs is not the same as water from your shower. By washing your eyeballs you’re just replacing a perfectly ph balanced solution that is designed to keep your eyes healthy and replacing it with a liquid that will dry them out and that will contain mineral deposits that will only irritate such a sensitive organ.

StripyHorse · 29/11/2025 10:35

You need to wash your eyes if..... you get something harmful in them. The risk of the bacteria in tap water is outweighed by the harm from the chemical.

Occasionally, if I have hay-fever or similar I 'wash' my eyes with eye drops to help wash away the pollen.

BlakeCarrington · 29/11/2025 10:51

I love that this thread is still going with heated eyeball washing discussion. Excellent work OP!

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:28

Well yes obviously but you don’t get foreign objects in your eyes everyday to make them water, so surely they need washing daily too?

I grew up with this information. My parents told me how to wash my eyes and I remember being quite young when I still used to shower with my mum and she would wash her eyeballs this way too. I don’t think it’s as unusual as people make out.. similar to whether people wash their legs or not.

Now I know making this uo as no child would willingly let the shower water go in their eyes. All my kids go mad if the water goes near their eyes

What are you on?

OneInEight · 29/11/2025 11:05

In the lab we used to have a safety manual with instructions for dealing with any chemical incidents. It used to state that if you get water in your eyes you have to wash it out with copious amounts of water. Always made me laugh.

Ask your optician next time you have an appointment

I just googled and the advice is to not wash them routinely and that they should only be 'washed' if medically necessary. Eg something in your eye and it should be a sterile eye bath, never tap water.

I do not wash my eyes but on shampoo bottles it says if some gets in your eyes you should wash it out with water and I have used normal tap water for that. I don't go boil the kettle then wait for it to cool

jen337 · 29/11/2025 11:42

HumourMeThis · 28/11/2025 21:42

well no because the GP doesn’t routinely tell you not to use soap in your minge either, or to wash between your toes. It’s just one of those things that are either common sense or not important enough to mention I guess.

Well yes, because if you went to see your doctor about your minge or toes, or were at a specialist, such as dentist or optician, then hygiene would
probably come up.

The water in your shower isn't sterile - you're MORE likely to get conjunctivitis etc by doing this.

This is definitely not normal! Shower water constantly in your eyes is more likely to give you an infection. It isn’t sterile!

notatinydancer · 29/11/2025 12:44

Our tap water is not sterile. I wear contact lenses ( never in the shower or swimming pool) I am always told not to get tap water in my eyes.

You can wash around your eyes to get the sleep out etc. no need at all to wash your actual eyeballs.
