Nanny wearing my slippers when I'm not there

This is a bit of a weird one - so I popped home today unexpectedly while the nanny was in my house with the kids. Everything seemed fine, but then when she was talking to me I looked down and saw that she was wearing my slippers. It made me feel sick. They're not the cleanest or newest of slippers, but I didn't know what to say. I don't know if she's been doing this the whole time or what but I feel like binning the slippers and hiding my slippers in future. I also feel like letting her go over it. It just makes me wonder what else she might do when I'm not there. She's from Brazil. Is this normal in Brazil to just wear someone else's slippers? Am I being weird to have a total icky feeling about this?

Here we go again - people focusing on completely the wrong thing! Saying it made her feel sick is probably just a turn of phrase! it is not normal to wear other people's slippers or shoes without even asking or saying something! Would you all say the same if she was walking around in the Op's stilettos - it is simply not normal!

FateAmenableToChange · 27/11/2025 16:14

That would completely gross me out, so I would quite nicely say to her oh goodness you shouldn't wear those they are very old and stinky! Ill get you some new ones, and buy the girl some cheap ones she can wear. And because Im a bit ocd Id probably replace my ones too!

Luna6 · 27/11/2025 16:29

You are obviously not hard up. Why not buy her her own slippers to wear? You can get a nice pair from Primark.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 27/11/2025 16:30

YABU because you didn’t just ask her there and then to take them off and not do it again. What is wrong with everyone on Mumsnet not being able to use their ‘big voices’ and say when they are upset about something to the person’s face and instead just rant about it in FB and let loads of strangers try and guess random reasons behind slippergate.

I've worked in houses where there is a very strict shoes off policy and there is a basket of communal slippers for visitors to use. Maybe that is something she is familiar with and didn't think you would have a problem.
Your reaction does seem a bit extreme.

Communal slippers 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Buy yourself a new pair and give her the old ones to wear. Put your new ones away. Explain that we don't wear other people's clothes or shoes.

Panda69 · 27/11/2025 18:06

I would totally react the same way!..after initial shock and cringe,I would buy her a pair of slippers and give them to her( so she knew they were the designated slippers for her to wear) and buy myself new ones, but keep them out of the way.....alot of people wouldn't see a problem doing it/ someone doing it

Put your slippers in the washer, put them away so she can't find them.
Buy her a pair for Christmas and tell her to leave them at your house to wear.

rosie1873 · 27/11/2025 18:26

I would have thought she would have a pair of her own to bring. After all, not everyone has the same size feet.
Perhaps you could say nothing, leave them out for her and get yourself a new pair and hide them under the mattress or something. 😀
Everyone has different feelings about this and you are entitled to yours.

Communal slippers 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Thank god it's not just me! 🤢🤢🤢

How bloody disgusting!

Why should other people help themselves to other people's personal items!
Where's their manners???

buy her a pair of her own, and a new pair for yourself.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 26/11/2025 16:49

I think you’re a bit unreasonable.

If you require shoes off in the house, you should have thought to provide her with slippers from the outset. It’s not reasonable to expect her to go around in her socks or bare feet all day, especially if you have hard (ie not carpet) floors.

She shouldn’t have to bring her own slippers to adhere to your house rules.

Wearing your slippers is a bit odd but if there was nothing else it’s not wholly unreasonable of her. Not very nice for her if they weren’t clean!

I think you should buy yourself and her a new pair of slippers each to wear at your house. And let her know which are hers and that they aren’t interchangeable.

She shouldn’t have to bring her own slippers to adhere to your house rules - Why not? Genuinely. This is weird to me.

Would she help herself to a jumper if she felt a bit chilly? Should the employer provide that as well?

CiderandSprouts · 26/11/2025 17:02

So because the OP happened to mention that her nanny is Brazilian, she's a card-carryjng member of the KKK?😂😂😂😂

Acknowledging cultural differences is racist 😂

Gotta love MN 😂

Andregroup · 27/11/2025 18:38

My DH is from another country and yes, it is 'normal' to put any old slippers on. I realise it's not 'normal' in the UK but it is 'normal' elsewhere.

So please don't have a go at her for doing something that she thinks is 'normal'. Just buy her her own slippers for your house, bin the ones she's been wearing, and buy yourself a new pair.

I take my own slippers whenever I visit my in-laws because there is nothing more gross to me than FIL kicking off his slippers and offering them to me. 😂 I also have to police my own slippers at home incase DH can't find his own and spots mine.

weusedtobeapropercountry · 27/11/2025 18:39

Catsbreakfast · 26/11/2025 17:02

The fact she’s from Brazil and wears your slippers makes you feel sick? Mind your own children or make sure your staff doesn’t have to trod around your cold house in socks then. You sound horrid.

😂

weusedtobeapropercountry · 27/11/2025 18:41

zurigo · 26/11/2025 17:07

Typical MN that there's a pile-on accusing the OP of being racist. Would no one else be grossed out at the thought of someone else wearing their slippers? Feet aren't exactly the cleanest things and slippers are often worn with bare feet. Things like veruccas and athlete's foot are common and contagious, plus feet sweat a lot and can smell. I would hate anyone wearing my slippers apart from a close family member.

Edited

I am grossed out by it 😂 But you have to admit, this thread is amazing 😂 MNers are flippin' bonkers 😂

Glowingup · 26/11/2025 17:09

Oh she’s from BRAZIL? Yeah they’re all mad over there, she’ll be wearing your pants next 🙄

At least she won't be leaving her pubes in said underpants.

BellyPork · 26/11/2025 17:43

When I'm a guest at a no shoes house I look for a pair of guest slippers to put on. If there are none, I request a pair. I must be rank.

If there aren't any communal ones, do you just help yourself to the ones belonging to the home owner? 😂

weusedtobeapropercountry · 27/11/2025 18:53

CustardySergeant · 26/11/2025 18:06

Why should the OP buy the nanny some slippers? If the nanny wants to wear slippers there's nothing to stop her buying herself some is there?

The local nursery has a shoes off inside policy. The staff are not provided with slippers. They have to buy their own.

It's mad to me that some people think this is something employers should provide. "Here's a coat in case you take the kids out" 😂 It's equally mental that people think if it's not provided, the nanny can just help herself to OP's personal belongings, and that's fine. On what planet 😂

I wouldn't sack her over it, but I would feel icky. Feet can be gross, and the wondering what else she's been helping herself to wouldn't feel so hot either.

FastGoldCat · 27/11/2025 18:53

Personally, I wouldn't like someone wearing my slippers as they might have really sweaty feet. Taking your shoes off at the end of the day and putting on a fresh pair of slippers is one of those things you look forward to. In the past though, I have thought about buying communal slippers for guests, in case they want to use them. In your nanny's situation, I'd have taken my own pair of slippers to work with me. However, it's definitely not a sackable offence, and if your nanny is good enough to look after your kids, they should be good enough to wear your slippers. Surely, you must be sharing the same toilet seat! I wouldn't have mentioned it at the time, or in the future. I'd just buy a new pair of slippers and keep them out of sight, and let guests carry on using your old pair.

weusedtobeapropercountry · 27/11/2025 18:57

SilverDoublet · 26/11/2025 18:36

The kids always take their shoes off at the door as they prefer it and they tend to be dirtier from playing outdoors. We always have our shoes off for going upstairs as there's carpets upstairs only. But the nanny is never upstairs, as far as I know.

Yeah, but you also thought she wasn't wearing your slippers, and look how that turned out 😂

Nanny cams are very reasonable online 🤪

Shinyandnew1 · 26/11/2025 23:19

I cannot understand why you didn't simply say, 'Maria - are those my slippers you are wearing?

This. You found someone wearing your shoes and didn't actually say anything to them at all?

That's bizarre.

It's such a bizarre thing to do, I think I'd have been lost for words as well, and that does not happen very often 😂

And it´s also a bit weird that OP doesn´t use her words and say, hey Maria, I don´t want you using my slippers, please use your own. Or alternatively, Hey Maria you can keep my old slippers, I have just ordered a new pair for me. In the future, please don´t use any of my personal items.

It's a bit weird that the nanny needs to be told not to use any of OP's personal items 🤔

Tuesdayschild50 · 27/11/2025 19:09

Overreacting on sacking her .. just buy two new pairs make it clear who's is who's.
Unless there is anything else I could get over that.
