Nanny wearing my slippers when I'm not there

This is a bit of a weird one - so I popped home today unexpectedly while the nanny was in my house with the kids. Everything seemed fine, but then when she was talking to me I looked down and saw that she was wearing my slippers. It made me feel sick. They're not the cleanest or newest of slippers, but I didn't know what to say. I don't know if she's been doing this the whole time or what but I feel like binning the slippers and hiding my slippers in future. I also feel like letting her go over it. It just makes me wonder what else she might do when I'm not there. She's from Brazil. Is this normal in Brazil to just wear someone else's slippers? Am I being weird to have a total icky feeling about this?

How am I racist? I mentioned where she's from in case it's a cultural thing. If I mentioned she was from Wales or Ireland or France or Spain would you be calling me racist? And no, I don't ask her to do any cleaning, loo included.

Just ignore them. I think that by asking you’re proving you’re not racist! You’re asking if it’s cultural which I think shows you’re sensitive of anyone’s culture and want to approach it respectfully.

I’ve come to the conclusion some people on here just must be so fucking miserable they have to call you something to make themselves feel better!

ViaRia01 · 27/11/2025 19:13

At least you know what to buy her for Christmas !

Seasidewalker · 27/11/2025 19:15

Oh no!! We housesit for friends, care for their mum and look after their dogs a few times a year. I often slip on whatever boots or shoes are by the back door to take the dogs in to the garden 😱. She knows I do as I asked her where she got some lovely boots from a they were really comfy!

Maybe I should prepare to be binned?!

As someone who has been a nanny for 10 years to three different families this is odd. I did once have to borrow a coat to go do school pickup as for some reason I had not brought one and it started pouring. I texted the mum first to ask and of course she was fine with it, as I knew she would. But I wouldn’t have done so without asking first.

2021x · 27/11/2025 20:30

Slippers feel a lot more personal and so I would also be a bit freaked out. I don't think I would even wear my family members slippers without asking.

Not sure about the batshittery on here calling the OP racist.

PInkyStarfish · 26/11/2025 15:56

It is revolting and I would have told her she can keep them but she is not too to wear the new replacement slippers that you will now be buying.

Stone me....

It's such a bizarre thing to do, I think I'd have been lost for words as well, and that does not happen very often 😂

That's exactly how it was in the moment for me. I found it so strange and an invasion of my privacy too. I'd been wearing those slippers around in my bare feet for the past year. I assumed I was the only one wearing them. I'm grossed out by my husband's slippers, and never in a million years would I think to wear his, or anyone else's slippers.

That's how I feel too. I can't see why anyone is calling me racist. I mentioned where she is from as I know it's a different culture and a warm country, so just might be different there.

This happened to me with a cleaner. I couldn't believe it! I never wore those slippers again

SilverDoublet · 27/11/2025 21:23

Archymum · 27/11/2025 13:52

Your nanny never goes upstairs in your house? How is that possible?

No, she has no need to. She is only at my house for 3 hours, she gets the children to do homework at the kitchen table, listens to their reading, gives them snacks and cooks dinner for them and clears up after. There's no time for her to be upstairs, and I don't ask her to do housework. The kids are school age and don't have naps.

This! My adult cousin once borrowed my slippers (weirdly, in order to go into the garden because he didn’t want the faff of putting his shoes on!) and I sprayed them afterwards and even then felt squeamish about wearing them. And no (before anyone comes at me), I didn’t think they really needed disinfecting — but it made me feel marginally less squeamish about wearing them.

Edited

I would feel the same, thank you. I wouldn't even like to wear my husband's slippers or have him wear mine. Yuck.

OK so she is from Brazil, a hot country. She is probably freezing in your English house.
I would buy her a new pair and say: I've noticed you wore my slippers, your feet must be freezing, here are new slippers for you to wear when here.

Done, no big deal. Zero need to post on mumsnet about it.

Except we have underfloor heating, so the floor is never cold.... Makes it more strange.

To me it was really OTT to say this made you feel sick!

It was an invasion of my privacy. My mind did start spiralling into what else she might do when I'm not around. I have worked as an au pair in my youth and never in a million years would I have dreamed of doing such a thing. I also felt sick that she's been wearing my dirty sweaty slippers. It's a hygiene thing.

Why does this make you feel sick? What a weird overreaction. They’re just feet.

Does it make you feel sick when you touch doorhandles which other hands have touched? Or escalator handrails? Or stroke dogs?

Nothing bad is going to happen. I think it’s an invasion of personal space / belongings but we have to stop with all the immature “eeeew germs” crap. It makes you sound ridiculous.

Yes I do find escalator handrails pretty gross actually. And I do wash my hands after being on public transport etc. Germs are a thing, remember covid...?

Thank you. I don't know why so many jump to the conclusion I'm a racist. I'm not at all. People are just looking to take offence. Although it's neither here nor there, the nanny actually has the same skin colour as me and probably a similar genetic heritage.

If you insist on her removing shoes in your house then you should provide her with a pair of slippers. She shouldn't be out of pocket to comply with your house rules.

If you don't require her to remove her shoes, then yes, it's a bit odd.

No, I've never asked her to remove her shoes.

This person is probably wiping your children’s tushies and you are freaking out over sharing slippers?

No she's not. My kids are school age.

It's blooming freezing today. No wonder she borrowed your slippers. You can afford a nanny but not a pair of slippers for her?

In all likelihood though, she is also wearing your underwear and then putting it back in the drawer without washing it. <sarcastic>

Doubt she'd want to wear my underwear, it's ancient. There's underfloor heating downstairs so wasn't necessary.

It's weird you never said anything to her

I was shocked and speechless to be honest. And I was only popping in for 2 minutes to collect my son to bring him to his match.

Seems an odd thing for her to do if she's only there for three hours & can keep her shoes on.

I wouldn't like it either Op.

Communal slippers 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

Presumably they're washed after being used?

Just buy her a new pair ! Not that I can see a problem with it.
But your reaction is completely over the top. And not a sackable offence.

I agree !
