To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

Fuck sake.

AngryBird6122 · 24/11/2025 21:04

As you can tell by this thread, cat owners are just nuts. They think cats being in charge etc etc is SO funny

I wish people would stop pretending that concern for birds is a major reason for disliking cats. The RSPB itself says that cats don’t affect bird population in the UK.

Well yes exactly! Not once have I ever witnessed a bird just sitting in my garden waiting patiently for one of my cats to catch it. Until my cats harness the power of flight, I think the local bird population is pretty safe 😅

The only time one of my cats has "caught" a bird was a pre squished one hit by a car (my cat wasn't driving).

CalmShaker · 24/11/2025 21:05

I'm with you OP, i have had many bird nests destroyed in my garden due to cats.

Wiltedgeranium · 24/11/2025 21:06

I would love to follow middle cat on his escapades, but i can't fit under the fence.

Other cats shit in my garden. My cats are not very good at defending their territory.

OneBadKitty · 24/11/2025 21:09

I don't get the angst over cat poo! Gardens are full of shit from all the wild animals- birds, foxes, rats, mice, hedgehogs, badgers, squirrels, rabbits, worms, slugs and so forth. It's hardly a sterile place for playing in for kids, not that it should be. Dog poo is much more of a nuisance- at least cat owners don't bag their cat's shit and hang it form trees in woodlands, cat's don't shit on the pavements, or on the grass in the park.

Yes blaming it on cats is a get out away from real issues

I don’t think it’s even a ‘get out’ from real issues. The main issues people complain about with cats is the poop in their gardens, then they tack another few things on to make it seem like a bigger issue than it is. In truth, the concept of land/home ownership is a fully human concept. We have devastated huge amounts of wildlife habitats to make our own homes and feed our families then complain about the animals WHO LIVED THERE FIRST having the audacity to .. continue to live there. Notice no one cares about the mice and the rats and the frogs and grass snakes and the fish and the spiders that cats can and do hunt, only ever the birds. And no one ever mentions the squirrels and fox cubs and rabbits and hedgehogs and PEOPLE that dogs kill, simply because they aren’t crapping in their gardens. All animals shit. Almost all of it is dangerous to people if ingested. At least say what you mean and don’t pretend you are so concerned with wildlife populations that something simply MUST be done about cats and only cats. You care that they are inconveniencing you. So fucking what. This is all of our planet to live on, animals, even cats, included.

Spiders even rub their willies on freshly hung washing, and I've never heard anyone complain about that.

Sartre · 24/11/2025 21:14

Yeah I agree. The damage they do to birds in this country is appalling. They kill around 50 million every single year in the UK alone. Their shit is also toxic so dangerous for gardeners/ children. They’re pretty grim tbh, I don’t know why people like them but whatever- to each their own, they should be kept indoors though.

Pest control? You can’t be serious. Domestic cats decimate wildlife. They have been banned in several countries for good reason.

Does this mean we have to ban all predatory animals then?

MaplePumpkin · 24/11/2025 21:16

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/11/2025 19:13

They shouldn't eat it then.

I was thinking this!
When I was pregnant I didn’t touch, eat, or roll about in cat poo, so I was absolutely fine.

IsntItDarkOut · 24/11/2025 21:17

If we had to walk our cats on leads then dogs would need to be banned. Imagine what would happen.

I tried to keep my latest cat in but he started trying to climb out of upstairs windows he was so desperate to be out. He still comes in for a poo.

AhBiscuits · 24/11/2025 21:20

I don't understand why cat owners can't just keep them in tanks, it works great for my fish.

Scottishlass10 · 24/11/2025 21:21

When I adopted my cat part of the adoption criteria was he had to be allowed unfettered outdoor access.

Buffypaws · 24/11/2025 21:22

My good boys have a magic fence so they stay in the garden. Never would I trust the general public with them; humans are disgusting animals that do horrible things.

OonaStubbs · 24/11/2025 21:31

Just ban all dogs, all cats, and all birds. That way everyone will be happy.

Thank you!

it’s all a bit of propaganda about wildlife to distract from the real causation

intensive farming and climate change due to human lifestyle

Absolutely serious about pest control

I worked on a housing estate where cats were banned - omg the pest control bill was £1ks a week

Where I live the preponderance of green parakeets is a big problem for local birds - in some parks all you can hear now is them screeching away.

CrownCoats · 24/11/2025 21:36

Dollymylove · 24/11/2025 21:16

Domesticated ones that live in densities that would not be seen in nature, yes. Which only applies to cats.

Happyjoe · 24/11/2025 21:36

My last cat used to bury his poo. He also buried any other exposed cat or dog poop that he stumbled across. He hated an untidy poo. He also used to wee down drains in the road, will never forget the tinkle sound it made.

My cat now brings home litter. Loads of it, most nights in the summer which she 'hunts' all the mess the local humans leave behind, potentially harming other wildlife around.

Cats are great! Dogs are too but they're totally different animals with different needs and can't compare the two.

CrownCoats · 24/11/2025 21:36

Scottishlass10 · 24/11/2025 20:28

The biggest decimator of wildlife are humans.

Sure, but they’re not easily banned, are they?
