To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

Look up the cat related human deaths versus the dog related human deaths. That might help

Whatafustercluck · 24/11/2025 21:39

Cats don't have owners, they have servants. Tin openers. Yabu.

TheSwarm · 24/11/2025 21:39

Birds kill billions of worms every year.

Who is thinking of the worms, eh? Nobody, that's who. If it wasn't for cats keeping the bird population under control, we'd see the decimation of worms on a hitherto unseen level.

Sure, but they’re not easily banned, are they?

Sadly no, but they could stop having a holier than thou attitude.

Thank you!

it’s all a bit of propaganda about wildlife to distract from the real causation

intensive farming and climate change due to human lifestyle

Absolutely! Add in bird deaths via power lines, wind turbines, cars, and hitting glass windows... Oh, and death via other birds. Those the leading cause of bird deaths. The cat issue is hokum nonsense.

It's like everyone thinking they're 'doing their bit using paper straws'. Whilst totally ignoring that deep trawler fishing is decimating the oceans.

Spiders even rub their willies on freshly hung washing, and I've never heard anyone complain about that.

Now that's something I don't think I'd ever thought I'd read - but thanks for the chuckle!

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 24/11/2025 21:48

I absolutely detest cats! Shitting all over other peoples gardens and their owners allowing them to walk all over their kitchen sides is utterly disgusting! I agree op, they should be subject to the same rules as dogs.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 24/11/2025 21:49

I do think cat owners should take more responsibility for their pets. They should not get upset if they are cat-napped by people in the neighbourhood or perish in road accidents.

It's on you as the owner to ensure your pet is safe.

I absolutely detest generalisations!
My cat and the one before were banned from kitchen bench, tables, everything like that. So much so I forgot to leave the cats overnight grub the other week on the floor - she didn't jump on the bench when I was asleep to eat it - instead went hungry.

Oh I know

there’s nothing us normal ordinary folk can do

it’s the elites that could make the most change

My cat roams free. If he gets knocked down - shit happens. If he gets napped, good luck affording his food habit. He was rescued from a cage so he’s had a better life with me than that however long that is. He shits in a bit of waste ground that no one walks on and it biodegrades, so quite happy with that. He winds up my next door neighbours cunty dogs who bark constantly which amuses me. He’s never killed a bird despite his penchant for feather toys.

Not get upset if knocked down or stolen by a human that should know better and who is breaking the law by stealing the cat? Really?

Wow.

So, if I’m reading this right, the solution is to get a massive dog that likes to eat cats for funzies?

Tell me you’ve never had a cat without saying you’ve never had a cat.

Totally different animals. Not sure how owners would follow their cat over fences and keeping them on leads is cruel… but their recall is terrible.

Proud owner of cat who does have good recall. It takes him about 5 minutes to come( obviously finishes off what he was doing at the time) and immediately checks his food bowl on arrival. He’s out patrolling gardens in the day and would climb the walls if we made him stay in but happy to nap on the best spot of the sofa once night falls. Oh and un fortunately he actually comes home to go to the loo in his litter box and then goes back out 😂

It's down to the cat owners to keep their pet safe. If you let it roam and it decided to move in with the neighbours... it's on you! You let it roam so someone else decided to take care of the poor feral cat.
Same for road traffic accidents...

I checked with my cats and they both replied, in synch, "fuck you I won't do what you tell me".

Mine said the same! 😆

Go and live in the USA OP, you'd fit in well there

If a cat gets knocked down it’s generally an accident. This happened to one of mine quite recently and although I was very upset I don’t regret letting him spend time outdoors. He had a long, happy life and managed to dodge cars for 17 years. I guess his reactions had slowed down somewhat. Still always managed to find a window to escape from when I tried to encourage him to stay inside though.

If a neighbour chooses to steal a cat, it is not accidental.

Of course you take risks when you let your pets outside. But doesn’t excuse criminal behaviour - I.e poisoning, intentionally harming or stealing them.

Are people being deliberately thick on this thread? It’s worrying if they genuinely believe this tripe.

Actually the theft of a cat is on the thief. It's not illegal to have a cat outside but it is to steal a cat.
Plus, its the not allowed to be upset bit. Of course be upset!

Olderbutt · 24/11/2025 23:17

Dog poo is also a possible danger to humans! Cats don't maul humans to death!

Gettingbysomehow · 24/11/2025 23:22

When I Iived in Mauritius as a child in the 1970s we had packs of wild dogs roaming the streets. They were extremely mangy and dangerous. They couldn't be trusted around children. They cull them these days by all accounts but I was chased up a tree more than once y wild dogs. Then it was a decision between the dinner plate size tree spiders or the dogs.

OneReasonWhy · 24/11/2025 23:23

oh look. Another unhinged cat hating thread.
Honestly, there’s no one more psychopathic than a mumsnet cat hater. They are absolute lunatics. Every fucking month there’s at least one cat hater thread where they all spout their bile. It’s so weird.

DiscoBeat · 24/11/2025 23:28

I kind of agree on one hand. Luckily neither of my cats want to leave the garden (I kept them in for 4 months when they arrived to help them get used to home).
They don't hunt now that I give them a bedtime snack of extra biscuits.

OneReasonWhy · 24/11/2025 23:31

Only cat haters talk about poisoning, maiming, injuring and killing a defenceless animal and how owners shouldn’t be upset over it. Like it’s ok to be cruel to an animal as long as it’s a cat. You never see people that dislike dogs frothing and spitting over dog shit all over the pavements and parks, or discussing how to injure it or gleefully telling dog owners that they can’t be upset if their dog gets out and gets hit by a car or dog napped. Cat haters are a red flag - the way they talk about cats makes me think they are cruel in many other ways. Probably to their kids.
