To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

The way the world is going we wont need to worry about cats, we will be in WW3.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 24/11/2025 20:30

Yeah, good luck with that. Cats do what the fuck they want, regardless of their owners. They even find new owners if they feel like it 😂

Another cat bashing thread…..

uk is full of Victorian built homes - terraces….let’s take the pet cats away and see what happens to the rodent population shall we?!

honestly humans have used cats for thousands of years for this reason!

Exactly - I had a mouse problem
im my kitchen

not any more 🐈

mondaytosunday · 24/11/2025 20:31

My cats poo and wee in my garden. They have also only successfully killed one little mouse in their four years. My dog has killed three mice and at least one rat. Dogs can also bite and kill people. Cats don’t do that.

Doggielovecharlotte · 24/11/2025 20:31

Cats are not socially obligated so they wouldn’t respond to calling unless they felt like it..

very different from dogs

I’m with you OP, finally someone that thinks how I think 😂🙌

OK. So keep them inside then 😉

No. I'll continue to let them out by themselves thanks. They prefer it.

I disagree with this. I don’t want to see any animal suffer a horrible death and it’s obvious people love their pets. But evidence suggests house cats are just as happy as outdoor cats, with much less risk. So it does seem non-sensical to me expose them to that risk.

I really hope you are vegetarian. If not it’s very hypocritical of you to pick on cat owners when the life animals lead when intensively farmed is shocking. Also I presume you only drink organic milk and any meat is organic.

DoBeDoBeDooo · 24/11/2025 20:36

highlandcoos · 24/11/2025 20:28

LOL, OP has no answer, so is deflecting!
Why would a cat owner who is happy for their pet to go outside alone, be researching this?

Not deflecting at all, just asking what I thought was a very valid question.

Whenever I've had pets, I've spent a lot of time researching what would be best for their wellbeing.

I'll post some references later.

The biggest decimator of wildlife are humans.

Absolutely, well said. Humans are the worst thing for the planet and wildlife by a country mile. Loss of habitat, poison, cars, buildings to fly into.. then you get into the millions eaten, shot and hunted for sport..

Even in recent history, look how they thrived with lockdown with us all stuck indoors not out there causing harm to them. Was (apart from the whole pandemic bit) really nice to see.

Meadowfinch · 24/11/2025 20:41

Cats are as entitled to roam as any other animal. Keeping them in would be cruel. Yes they kill birds and small mammals and poo in gardens but so do foxes, rats, stoats, weasels.....

Cats can be rendered less harmful by putting a bell around their necks. It's no big deal.

Why do people get so aggrieved about this stuff ?

I love cats, by the way. Am owned by 3 of the buggers, and always pet other cats when meeting them outside.

I just keep mine safely contained, because I quite like them being alive and in one piece. Baffled as to why that's unthinkable for other owners.

I think it's case by case. My last cat was rehomed with us when 5, due to difficult behaviour - he was a total git. He was an indoor cat, aggressive, lived with other cats and he just beat them up badly. He spent 20hrs a day meowing, door to door, window to window trying to get out. We let him out when we took him on and the turn around was insane. One happy cat, chilled, happy, content and all bad behaviour went.

The cat we have now we had to move for a few months to look after FIL in London. So spent a small fortune cat proofing the garden as the area was too busy to free roam like she did here (churchyard behind our house). She steadily went downhill, got to the point that she barely ate, wouldn't engage and sat in the corner of the room cowering from us. I took her back to the old house and her freedom and it took about 00000.1 of a second for her to revert back to happy cat and she went straight out the catflap into the garden, then the churchyard.

Would love an indoor cat because the worry aspect but also have to 'listen' to them, and their needs.

Neodymium · 24/11/2025 20:46

in Australia cats legally must be contained to your property. They cause so much damage to the environment killing all our native wildlife.

rarely a day goes by without a cat post in the fb community groups

My question isn’t whether dogs should be allowed to roam freely. Obviously they shouldn’t.

But why should cats be allowed to shit everywhere, including my garden where my young children play?

They don’t just kill mice and rats. They kill millions of birds every year too.

I wish people would stop pretending that concern for birds is a major reason for disliking cats. The RSPB itself says that cats don’t affect bird population in the UK.

I’ve ‘voted’ & am interested & delighted to see that OP has a high % saying she is being unreasonable.
I’m living up to my username! I do walk my cat, but I let him shit wherever he likes. Interestingly he catches rats mice & birds on his lead, so Ive no idea what would be the point of forcing all cats to live the way mine does 😻.
edited to add: cat & I are resident in UK, in case that’s of any interest.

I thought this was going to be about poor cats getting run over! But no, it’s about cat poo! Yes we have it in our garden sometimes from a neighbours cat but I just made sure my then son didn’t play in the mud! It isn’t that much of an issue. As for killing birds, it’s nature. You probably hate foxes too then?

Mumptynumpty · 24/11/2025 20:49

I live in the middle of a large urban area, next to a large football stadium. I have foxes, badgers, squirrels, mice, and rats. I suppose they don't crap at all.

Pigeons crap all over my washing in the summer. Should they be on leads too?

JudgeJ · 24/11/2025 20:56

Cat owners tend to be rather selfish people.

Rubbish, any cat will tell you that no-one owns a cat, the cat generously allows those strange humans to share its domain and they, the humans, feel a selfless responsibility to provide food on a regular basis.

Hellohelga · 24/11/2025 20:57

Peridoteage · 24/11/2025 18:46

Yabvvvu

Dogs are dangerous to humans.

Cats are not.

Dogs are far less dangerous to humans than other humans, primarily men. Maybe men should only be allowed out on a lead and under close supervision. Long line if they tend to wander off and not come back. Nice treats of course for good behaviour.

My cats are sitting here laughing at you. 😻😻

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 24/11/2025 21:00

I have a harness and lead for the cats, like fuck they'll walk anywhere with them on 🤣🤣🤣

Fiftyandme · 24/11/2025 21:01

Oh dear - can you not tell the difference between cats and dogs, OP?

They’re completely different animals, with completely different needs. Cats are not built for exercising by trotting along in a park.
