To think cats shouldn’t be allowed out without owners

The other thread about cats vs dogs has made me realise I’m not alone in my feelings about cats being allowed to roam freely, kill wildlife, and crap all over the place.

Why is it one rule for dogs and another for cats? It’s doesn’t make any sense really, when you think about it.

Shouldn’t the same rules apply: cats can be walked on leads and owners must pick up after them or risk fines etc?

Restricitng cats to indoors is not cruel per se, but it is limiting their life experience, their physical activity, and their general fulfillment.

All my cats have been outdoor cats. Current cat Arthur is super healthy, fit, muscley, enjoys a varied diet which includes a mouse a day. He is 10 years old now, but according to the vet is more like a 4 year old in health terms.

Cats are domesticated, but they are also very well capable of living without humans, they choose to stay with us for convenience, but we shouldn't lock them in.

TwelvePiecesOfFlair · 29/11/2025 16:40

It’s incredibly cruel to walk a cat on a lead anywhere that isn’t their territory. Unlike dogs they are territorial and where they feel at home is more important often than who they live with.
My much loved cat was eventually hit by a car (a speeding car- had it been going the speed limit puss would have easily dodged it).
He was a semi feral rescue cat ( turned evening cuddle monster) and loved to be out and about all day long. He probably used up a few lives before we got him. As devastated as I was, it would have been far worse for him to live a long life in captivity.

I bloody hate the local cats which come into my garden. They leave dead mice. They crap all over the place. They’ve scared off all the lovely birds we used to get on our bird feeders.

This is just odd. We have cats. We have bird feeders. They co-exist. The red kite and the magpies are the ones who drop dead things in our garden. The fox clears them up.

I often wonder if all the issues are in built up areas with lots of cats. In the country it doesn't seem to be a problem.

no Cat alive, dead, or not yet born would participate in recall

a dogs territory is wherever it is with its human

a cats territory is whatever it has claimed in the world of cats

humans can't enter the world of cats. They are not recognised there

have you ever met a cat.

I absolutely detest generalisations!
My cat and the one before were banned from kitchen bench, tables, everything like that. So much so I forgot to leave the cats overnight grub the other week on the floor - she didn't jump on the bench when I was asleep to eat it - instead went hungry.

Edited

No. It’s on me, a cat owner, to allow my cats to live their best lives as the animals they are and not try to subject them to human rules. We don’t have authority over the planet and the creatures who live in it.

Sorry I quoted the wrong poster!

Dogs are domesticated. Cats only semi-domestic

Nopenott0day · 05/12/2025 21:55

Yanbu. Cats are not native to the UK. They should be kept indoors or under control to protect wildlife.

Unfortunately on here 'my poor bwaby' cat lovers think their animal is more important then the ecosystem.

I think OP has a point. It makes zero sense to me that people get upset (rightly) about dog poo fouling public area yet apparently we are supposed to be ok with cats pooing wherever they fancy (including my back garden)

My question isn’t whether dogs should be allowed to roam freely. Obviously they shouldn’t.

But why should cats be allowed to shit everywhere, including my garden where my young children play?

They don’t just kill mice and rats. They kill millions of birds every year too.

Foxes and badgers and other wild animals will shit in your garden too - much bigger shit from a fox

They are native wildlife. Cats are not

Knittedanimal · 05/12/2025 22:12

We'd be over run with birds if we didn't have cats cintrolling their numbers. Urrgh!

Cats generally bury their poo.

Theslummymummy · 05/12/2025 22:54

Nope. They aren't the same species. Cats are legally allowed to roam. Nothing more to it.

cloudtreecarpet · 05/12/2025 23:18

Can't believe this silly thread is still running!

Cats bury their poo, the poo you are bothered about is very likely from a fox.

Cats aren't happy being inside; they are supposed to roam so decent owners will let them.
Get over it, there are worse things to be moaning about - crappy litter, graffiti and fly tipping for one & that's humans messing the place up.

rainbowsparkle28 · 05/12/2025 23:23

Kill wildlife?! 😂😅 I mean what - perhaps the neighbourhood Minnie and Mickey Mouse granted occasionally, maybe a little bug, but don’t think anything else more extreme than that?! As others have said, dogs on the other hand sadly have done a lot worse 😔
Cat poo - very rarely if ever do you see a cat poo on the pavement (don’t think can actually recall any occasion), dog poo that selfish ignorant people haven’t picked up, however…

Aside from that, in short - YABU and ridiculous 🙄

Is it time to end cats’ right to roam?

Pet cats kill songbirds by the million, as well as other wildlife. But how much of a threat do they really pose, and should they be kept indoors?

As you can tell by this thread, cat owners are just nuts. They think cats being in charge etc etc is SO funny

It is though. They do what they want and are untrainable. They’re domesticated (which they did themselves, like foxes are trying to do) to make their own lives easier.I like dogs well enough but as my partner says, they are kiss arses. They just want you to like them. Cats dgaf. I love that about them.

KilliMonjaro · 06/12/2025 22:21

Don’t be ridiculous! 🐈🐈‍⬛😹
