I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I am freezing. Down to my bones. I have a heating pad under my jumper and a blanket on me and I finally feel warm for the first time this week.

I have ordered a hot water bottle but I don’t know what else I can do. I’m freezing. I’m on Mounjaro so I think it’s that, but I’m just so miserable.

I think you've been so ground down by this man's behaviour that you can't see how unreasonable he is.

What does he do if you have visitors to the house? Are they expected to sit in a cold house and not offered hot drinks because he considers it's too expensive to boil a kettle for 3 minutes?

Frankly, it's batshit behaviour and I suspect he'll get worse as he ages.

Can you afford a flat share or to lodge with someone? I could not remain in an environment like this.

All our family and friends know the house is cold so just keep their coats on 😂😂 He’s happy for hot drinks, it’s just a hot water bottle he doesn’t like the kettle being boiled for.

No, it’s about him being tight.

Being tight to the detriment of the wellbeing and happiness of people you're supposed to love? That's worse than tight, that's mean and unkind

Cherrytree86 · 20/11/2025 10:31

@NuffSaidSam

It IS that cold.

Yep.

This morning for my part of Dorset when we got up it was forecast as -1C with "feels like" -4C.

We don't keep the rads on overnight and it was 15.5C in the dining room and lounge and only 6.6C in the (never heated) downstairs loo when we got up this morning. There was a frost and the bird baths were frozen over.

It's unusually cold this week for Dorset in November.

It's not really a laughing emoji issue OP.

You're in denial.

Do you have a mum? What is her view of his behaviour?

Does he not get the hint if visitors keep their coats on?

We have agreed that I’ll pay £15 a month extra for an electric blanket.

How much do you pay to live there in total?

Ophy83 · 20/11/2025 13:29

An electric blanket costs about 6p per hour to run so you can probably afford to boil the kettle every evening as well with your £15. Oil filled portable radiators are also pretty cost effective, it would be worth looking into that. If he isn't abusive, then he will allow you to pay for heating your own room so you don't have to live in discomfort.

ilovesooty · 20/11/2025 13:34

That's on the expensive side for an electric blanket. Some of them cost 2-3p an hour to run.

Many electric blankets are cheaper than that and a kettle costs less than 10p per boil.

This is not about being tight or having grown up in poverty. Its bullying and control. No adult lays down 'rules' to another adult in a normal relationship. Particularly rules that impact that adult's health and happiness.

LadySuzanne · 20/11/2025 13:42

OP, would you mind me asking how old you are?

Poursomesugaronme88 · 20/11/2025 13:43

Mounjaro lowers your temperature by affecting your brain stem! Ive been so cold and cannot warm up. Usually have a hot water bottle the minute i wake up and layers upon layers and a scarf on constantly.

And are you absolutely unable to get warm no matter what you do?

Were you up all night crying because you were so cold?

Are you cold at work and at the gym?

Does the heat drain from your body when you get out of a warm bath, such that bath has no long term impact on wanting you up?

Springersrock · 20/11/2025 13:53

I’m always freezing at work.

We do have heating but a) it’s crap and b) my boss is an arsehole who only lets us put in on for an hour here and there. My office is in one of those old 60s warehouses with no insulation so as soon as it goes off, all the heat is gone in about 5 minutes.

I usually wear thermal base layers (tops and bottoms, or fleece lined tights), some thermal socks, trousers, jumper, body warmer and a coat.

Boss is out today though so we’re rinsing the heating and I’ve taken my coat off.

TidyCyan · 20/11/2025 14:00

LadySuzanne · 20/11/2025 12:45

For safety reasons, you should not be using boiling water for hot water bottles, it will shorten the life of the rubber and spillages or a burst or leaking hot water bottle may result in serious burns.

If he spots her filling it from a hot tap he'll probably time how long it's running and invoice accordingly because he's abusive.

LondonPapa · 20/11/2025 14:06

ColdToesandWarmHeart · 19/11/2025 22:13

In an office, I don’t know. Bloody cold. It’s NHS, so the heating isn’t on anywhere near as much as you’d expect

When I was NHS the heating was pretty warm, even in the offices away from patients. For those with colder offices, heaters were provided. Is this not done at your Trust?

PropertyD · 20/11/2025 14:28

Just get an electric blanket and a heated throw. Stop messing around and potificating. Honestly - you can thank me later!

PropertyD · 20/11/2025 14:38

I am wondering if this a joke thread.

The Father's behaviour is not normal. Throwing away items that you buy? really - how dare he?

I presume you pay some rent. Increase the rent and then agree that you can have the heating on or will he just take the extra rent and carry on with his ridicilious behaviour and control.

What happens when he goes to the Caribbean? Monitor your heating from another country?

OP - this really isnt normal behaviour.

I don't think it's a joke, but I do think that what the OP really needs from it is sympathy and attention rather than tips on which thermal leggings to buy, which is what it presents as.

PropertyD · 20/11/2025 14:52

I am wondering if this is genuine what the OP does want. All suggestions are met with a defensive comment back and the Father controlling the house heating is very strange.

PropertyD · 20/11/2025 14:52

I am wondering if this is genuine what the OP does want. All suggestions are met with a defensive comment back and the Father controlling the house heating is very strange.

It started off as a "I'm really cold at work" advice thread with people giving suggestions about warm winter wear, external heating methods etc, and due to op's replies, it does sound a lot more like she is in her early to mid-20s, living at home, she's claiming that her father is just very very tight (cheap) in so much that he would throw away an electric blanket that she would buy because he doesn't want her using the electricity, that he gets angry when she fills up a hot water bottle and boils the kettle for that reason (even though you can still reuse the same water inside a bottle you don't have to waste the water you just have to use the electricity or gas to heat it up).

So, if this isn't a come on, it does sound like she's normalized behavior that is not considered by the majority to be normal, and even though some of the responses here are a little on the harsh side, as in harshly honest, that's one of the things I like about MN... Trolls aside, some harsh honest truths given by outsiders can be quite eye-opening.

I really hope that paying her father extra money per month for electricity and her purchasing herself an electric blanket gives her comfort, but I really don't think that's going to solve the problem which is bigger than just being chilly...

MincePiesAllRoundPlz · 20/11/2025 16:27

Do you live alone with your father @ColdToesandWarmHeart because if your Mum is also at home, how does she find the cold house?

Is she still under the same constraints as you- no heated blanket, mustn't boil a full kettle etc - but still has the luxury of long haul warm holidays in the winter?

I was merely agreeing with another poster that today has been unusually cold for this time of the year.

And if you look at my posts in this thread you will see that I have said that I think the OP's father is behaving unreasonably.

Another poster had said it is not cold ATM. But in some parts of the country it was below freezing this morning. This is a statement of fact and nothing to do with how the father is behaving.

I have also suggested she gets her iron levels checked.

No, I said it wasn't extreme or unusually cold for this time of year, but then I work in horticulture and used to being outside in all weathers, dressed appropriately - facebook memories for the last x years of dog walks in crisp conditions or even snow. Plenty of other posts on FB and Instagram all round the country comparing.
