Trump told a female reporter this. How come this behaviour is accepted but if it was former president Obama, people would have lost their mind. Obama had to practically be ‘perfect’. When Obama wore a tan suit, it was such a huge deal.

Racism is a sick illness.

What does “I like fish” and then hissing mean?

I was going to do an explainer about “fish” being at one time a derogatory term for women, but then I googled and it turns out he was talking about how he liked McDonald’s fish and how he would like them to put more tartare sauce on it……

Trump has a track record when it comes to insulting female reporters

But you do get the point that Trump being voted in was largely down to the Democrats? I mean, they were so dumb that they really thought they could sell the idea to the voters that Biden was competent and healthy, when it became apparent pretty early on inthe run up to the election that he really wasn’t. Aren’t you a tiny bit pissed off that the Democrats acted with such stupidity? I’d be pretty sceptical myself about a party who tried to sell this to the masses, that they’d be any better than Trump. At least with Trump the Americans pretty much knew what they were getting. The poor democrat voters had no idea who they were getting….

It had a lot to do with Elon Musk:

[Elon] "knows those computers better than anybody, all those computers, those vote counting computers, and we ended up winning Pennsylvania, like, in a landslide." - Trump

And on the subject of cognitive decline, Biden started out as a decent man and unfortunately slowed down towards the end of his term. Trump never was a decent man, he was always a stupid, greedy nonce. And now Trump is losing whatever marbles he once possessed. Anyone who's had a relative with dementia can see the signs.

As imperfect as Labour is right now, they are trying to turn around an economy that has been annihilated by 15 years of the Tories, Brexit and COVID.

They inherited a catastrophic, chaotic fiscal nightmare and anyone thinking that it would be sorted out by now is delusional.

Anyway. That's all within the realms of normal politics. Trump and his administration are not. The two are not remotely comparable, imo.

That poster is on the Irish passport thread still declaring herself very happy that she voted for Brexit, despite it causing a huge black hole in the UK's finances. Brexit has cost the UK approximately £140 billion, thanks to Cameron, Gove, Boris Johnson, Farage, Aaron Banks and Russian interference.

Agree with you re the vibes, but not the not voting bit.

If you have a vote, should use it.

A quick BING to confirm numbers, 37.4 million registered Republicans in the US, 44.1 million registered dems.

Dems outnumber republicans, but the problem is getting them to the polling stations. The Republican core though vote every time. And there is the electoral college, that benefits the repubs.

The amazing thing is with Trump tho, is he won the last election while showing apparent ignorance of how to win.

When he was saying thing on Fox news, along the lines of " we will win X state, and Y state", it actually disincentivizes his voters to vote. They might say " why bother, we will win anyway.".

@Livelovebehappy ”Aren’t you a tiny bit pissed off that the Democrats acted with such stupidity?”

Nah, they knew a white man, even one with a declining brain, stood a better chance for election than a woman. Also, Trump’s mind is also wobbly. Have you seen his “word salad” speeches?

No,I don’t get that point, although I see why people make it. If you change your vote to one that is diametrically opposed to everything you believe in because you don’t like the candidate, then that’s down to you as a voter. And if you chose Trump over Harris, then there’s a good chance racism and misogyny was involved too.

There's a reason for that:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voter_suppression_in_the_United_States
In March 2020, it was reported that Texas leads the South in closing down voting places, making it more difficult for Democratic-leaning African-Americans and Latinos to vote. The 50 counties that have experienced the greatest increases in African-American and Latino populations had 542 polling sites closed between 2012 and 2018, while those with the lowest increases in minority populations had only 34 closures

Well then that was stupid. If they honestly thought that someone clearly mentally unwell was going to be a good leader, apart from the fact that it was also cruel to use him in this way, then it says even more about the morals and character of these people. Not by any means championing Trump here, but pointing out that a lot of the blame lies with the Democrats. Had they put a candidate forward who had the mental capacity and strength of character to lead, then they would have wiped the floor with Trump.

Yup, US politics are really really dirty.

Have you seen the Gerrymandering that goes on ? Shocking. Picking and choosing demographic areas and bolting them together.

The 12 Most Gerrymandered Districts In America (ranker.com)

I have been following the Gavin Newsom V Texas redistricting battle. Newsom played a blinder. Texas redistricted to gain Repub seats, and Newsom done the same in California to wipe out potential Repub gains.

What happens to California's redistricting after Texas' congressional maps were struck down in court? - CBS News

I can totally understand US voters malaise at the dems rolling out the same "establishment" type candidates all the time.

This Newsom fella is the guy I am watching. He is out Trumping Trump in many ways.

You've likely heard about gerrymandering in the United States. As the country becomes more and more divided over political issues, it's a term that comes up a lot. So what is gerrymandering, and why is it so bad?Gerrymandering is a tool employed by man...

But Democratic voters didn’t necessarily change their vote. They just abstained from voting at all. Harris just didn’t appeal to Democratic voters at all, besides which she was pushed in at the last minute with barely any time to get the voters onside. Bear in mind too that she’d already been put forward as a possible candidate previously and polls had shown she was unpopular. Maybe there are a large demographic of voters in America who are misogynistic, but the Democrats knew that and still pushed forward with an unpopular candidate.

And now a court has blocked Texas' redistricting. But the Californian one is already law so it goes ahead (and it's legal because it's not designed to discriminate on racial grounds like the Texas one was). The Texas Republicans were getting nervous about it anyway, the tighter you redistrict the more vulnerable to a swing you are, and now all of the publicity has galvanised other states into action.

Yup. And it's never ending.

What I have noticed that has stopped though, is Americans barking " we have check and balances" at you when discussing politics.

As we are all seeing, they don't have any checks and balances at all.

I reckon if we put a bunch of political scientists in a room and asked them to come up with a system, they would really struggle to invent a system as bad as the US one is now.

At least us Brits can effectively sack our PM.

CoffeeCantata · 20/11/2025 13:48

Hmmm - I wouldn't call racism.

But the comparison with Obama's conduct is painful. It's often mentioned in our house. When was the last time the US had a dignified, statesmanlike president we all respected? Obama.

It's not so much the race issue but the horrendous vulgarisation of the presidency and all its institutions that I notice. When I think that once George Dubya was mocked and seen as none-too-bright, unintellectual, right wing, gung ho etc. Come back, all is forgiven!

I think the final straw for me was the storming of the White House a few years ago. I thought "America is now a third world country - or is behaving like one". It's as though the barbarians have taken over.

@Livelovebehappy Maybe the could have found another man to stand in Biden's place, but Biden was already the presumptive nominee.

Also, the Republicans should've put forward someone who wasn't a maniac like Trump. You didn't address Trump's "word salad" speeches.

He also claims the Dems are engaging in 'seditious behavior'.

I would have voted for a potato rather than a felon. Why couldn't the Republicans find anyone without a criminal record?
