Labour's new policies for asylum seekers

Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

If you read the article they are just trying to cover the cost to the taxpayer of immigration appeals and believe that if the person in question has assets such as a car this should be used to pay their legal fees, this seems entirely reasonable.

Fascist? Hardly! You wouldn’t allow a street cleaner to diagnose your health condition would you? That is not fascism, it is simply pragmatic. Allowing the uneducated rabble the same voting privileges as those of us who have been through the education system is folly, and you will see that in 2029.

Do not say that I did not warn thee.

WTF did I just read?

So we steal from the vulnerable rather than deal with the racist rot?

How is it stealing if it's to pay for their accommodation costs? I have to pay for my accommodation costs. Don't you? The truth is, the asylum system is being abused on a massive scale. Many are economic migrants; others are draft dodgers. Many of them are loaded. People smugglers aren't doing it for free. The guy who was returned to France on "one in, one out" could immediately afford a boat back. The poverty-stricken aren't travelling at all. In my view, falsely claiming asylum should be a criminal offence with serious penalties.

I’m very much hoping they’re a Russian bot.
Best not rise to it anyway.

As for all the people claiming we are overpopulated, I was in the Lake District a few months ago and there was space for miles. You could certainly set up a few refugee towns in villages in the North West of England. It’s the same on the North Eastern side too.

What about Wales? I think they’ve expressed an interest.

matresense · 17/11/2025 09:45

@frommyheadtomyfeet

i think that the valuables thing is quite helpful actually. There are quite a lot of criminals from Albania etc who claim asylum and manage to tie up attempts to deport them for a while. You don’t have to confiscate assets by proving that they are proceeds of crime if you just make them “contributions” - ultimately, if you are a person driving an Audi around London who is claiming that they have been trafficked into the country for asylum purposes, it’s a good thing for the authorities to be looking closely at that without having to spend years building a case that actually you are dealing drugs or whatever and prosecuting you. You’re clearly part of a criminal enterprise or working illegally so they can take your fancy car off you. Doesn’t seem unfair.

EasternStandard · 17/11/2025 09:41

Read the posts as parody they’re way better.

So we are joking about gas chambers now?

This country is being played for a fool. There are rich Islamic countries and that's where Islamic migrants belong. Turn up on a blow up boat, and you should be sent right back without touching land. And we should take equal numbers of females to males.

EasternStandard · 17/11/2025 09:45

The People of Wales would most certainly welcome asylum seekers from all over the world, no questions asked. Unfortunately the English government are greedy and horde the vast majority for themselves, which is unacceptable, we need to spread the strength of diversity all across the British Isles!

MaturingCheeseball · 17/11/2025 09:47

@Swiftasthewind I think the first person to be denied the vote should be you!!

What about the questionable voting habits in some communities where the leaders collect all the postal votes and fill them in? And the women don’t get a sniff of ‘em?

I can’t disagree that our democratic system is looking perilous now, but if you’re going to remove the vote from the “white working class” (oooh, who will qualify?!) because they’re “uneducated” then you’re going to have to remove it from a whole host of other uneducated people.

Oh my! You really are intolerant of the majority of the home-grown population, aren’t you? The white working class are not an uneducated rabble: sure, there may be some among them, but there are plenty of uneducated people that are also NOT white working class, you know!

There is a current proposal to build more houses in some ‘space’ near where I live. Lots of plans about housing and schools etc. No mention in the plans whatsoever about extra GPs or hospitals or places for employment or any transport links. Not as simple as that.

I wouldn’t describe the men in our local hotel who have been targeting young girls ‘vulnerable’ tbh.

EasternStandard · 17/11/2025 09:26

On voting sure.

If it’s not possible to take the assets then it won’t send a signal. People arriving aren’t stupid, they know exactly what the laws result in. There’s plenty of people ready to help and sell in the reality before they cross the Channel.

Is it any more impossible to take the assets than in other ways that assets are detected?

Apart from hard assets on arrival, you can usually see if someone has more than you might expect them to have. If someone in asylum accommodation suddenly has an e-bike/car/other expensive asset (to take the Home Office example), the authorities will have a trigger to look at where the money has come from to pay for said assets.

I am absolute loving someone calling others Nazi and then talking about removing franxhise from people they don't like.

I think this is the best example of the current state of politics here😂

I notice you say those have been through the education system, not who are clever.

In other words those who have been taught the same groupthink as you - some might call that indoctrinated.

Tbh it is people like you that have made brexit an almighty mess. So certain of your own cause and the stupidity of others that stifled any discussion in the wake of an inconclusive referendum this preventing any kind of soft middle option.

You're a fool to your own assessment of your righteousness

So stuff they have here in the UK? An e-bike for example. That’ll be why the op has focused on small items, that’s all it will be.

And cars? I mean a minute ago people were cooking in showers and struggling to cope on a few pounds a week.

No it’s not going to do what people want.

Ok. Now I know this is a wind up.

Speaking for an entire nation (where I live) and one where they're still not that happy about English people moving in and not integrating by learning the language.

I think you've mistaken someone who has said "in principle this isn't a bad idea" with someone charged with implementing it.

I suspect it is entirely for the visuals and not expected to raise more than a negligible amount of money, the goal is just to stop anyone saying ‘it’s not fair, we get means tested for benefits but asylum seekers don’t.’

The e-bike thing seems really random and all I can think of is, maybe some of the asylum seekers who are working here illegally doing deliveries have acquired e-bikes but when questioned they play innocent and say ‘I brought it with me’?

Leavesfalling · 17/11/2025 10:03

Why should tax payers pay if they have valuable items they can sell? Same as anyone.

RaspberryRipple2 · 17/11/2025 10:05

Those who are saying the current announced measures won’t change anything - my understanding is they are based on similar issues in Denmark and have worked there (as well as decreasing support for the far right extremist party).

however, I’m sure those responsible for the latter will continue to spread misinformation online that the measures haven’t and won’t work whatever happens, hey? Why pay attention to reality, especially if it makes your ideas less popular!

If they do this they should apply it to all asylum seekers. Including those arriving from Ukraine.

Laughing at an asylum seeker being pleased with being stuck up a Welsh mountain instead of in London.

Vivaldi85 · 17/11/2025 10:08

I think if I was an asylum seeker fleeing a war torn country I would give anything to escape. Nothing is for free for anyone
