Labour's new policies for asylum seekers

Are rumoured to follow Denmark's, which include the seizure of valuables from people arriving here to pay their accommodation costs.

Is anyone else disgusted by this?! How will it work, they can take people's jewellery, phones etc., and leave them with nothing? What sort of message does that send?

OK, so hands up all those posters that would be thrilled to have 600 single young men (all unchecked and many without identification) housed on their doorstep. It's all OK in theory but I'd love to know how long your enthusiasm would last in reality.

They have all passed the preliminary screening.

We recognise there are problems. I think using repurposed military quarters and student housing of a decent standard is a much better idea than using private hotels. A number of military bases and campus-based institutions are a bit out of the way, which is an advantage.

The other piece is that processing needs to speed up.

Preliminary screening doesn’t get access to much. It won’t get oversight of crimes in country of origin.

And where do they go from there?

poetryandwine · 22/11/2025 16:33

Terrribletwos · 22/11/2025 16:31

And where do they go from there?

Home, if they don’t get asylum. Into communities, if they do. As always.

PP I responded to was specifically talking about the hotels for asylum seekers, mostly single men

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/11/2025 16:36

People who ‘ enter illegally’ and apply for asylum will have their cases reviewed every 30 mos for 20 years before they can settle. They could be sent back any time if deemed not at risk

And given that's there's already a huge backlog, does anyone really expect the "every 30 months" to happen?

Unless of course they clear the whole lot via an "amnesty", which wouldn't surprise me in the least

Good point

@poetryandwine "They have all passed the preliminary screening."

Which basically means very little indeed. They can say more or less anything they like and you can be absolutely sure it won't include whether they're rapists, murderers, terrorists, wanted criminals in their own countries or economic migrants.

Cheap reply. You’ve not convinced me you have a leg to stand on

You will be astonished to learn this, but I don’t care in the least about convincing you.

Think I would be astonished that you don’t care about convincing me - or anyone else, fir that matter.

It is in the quote history, and it is the obvious assumption from the style of your posts

Good that you’re ok with other people not caring about convincing you and other randoms on the internet.

I've just read that asylum seekers get here on all sorts of fake visas ie holiday ,education then claim asylum and benefits. A large no are coming from Pakistan where there is no war.

It's been known for years that some "colleges" are merely visa factories and you'd think this would be an easy one to solve ... surely it would be easy enough to monitor attendance and whether any effort at all has been put into the syllabus?

Unless of course this would be thought politically difficult ...

Edited to add link. This goes back to 2004 and there seems little reason to suppose anything's changed:

HellsBalls · 23/11/2025 11:32

Successive governments haven’t done anything to address illegal immigration until now when the next election already has a clear winner unless the sitting government will actually do something about it, and start deporting the existing illegals.
At least Labour have recognized what is coming and are fighting to stay in power.

Of course this is correct. No one wants these undocumented young men in their towns and villages. They don’t mind stating their support for this as long as it’s NOWHERE near them.

Makes them feel better about themselves.
