To think you don't wear knickers with shapewear?

SnippySnappy · 16/11/2025 19:32

Full-body shapewear like this.

Can't figure this out.

Knickers underneath give VPL (especially with satin skirts/dresses) ... but no knickers plus the lower hook & eye situation is, well, hurty?! Or am I being a wuss?!

What do you do?

I wouldn't wear anything like that nowadays but when I did, I would wear them with knickers. They are tight and would cheese wire my chuff without knickers! Not to mention pretty gross

HelenaWaiting · 16/11/2025 19:36

If you wear knickers, your shape wear will last longer.

IvedoneitagainhaventI · 16/11/2025 19:48

My mother was born in 1919 . And she, and most of her contemporaries, wore all -in- one corsets or panty girdles and longline bras.

. Even when I first became a teenager some of my contemporaries wore panty girdles and my mother tried to make me wear one.

But then we had the glorious women's lib movement. Even if we didn't burn our bras we ditched all the victorian constraining underwear.

Why on earth are women these days wearing " shapewear" and such uncomfortable restricting things? Absolute retrograde nonsense.
Why do women do this to themselves?

Brightbluesomething · 16/11/2025 19:57

I wear them with a no vpl thong. Otherwise they’re a bit too breezy.

Lmnop22 · 16/11/2025 19:59

Definitely wear knickers and often tights too under these! Can’t have snippy bra clip things just right there on your naked vulva!

Nobody wants a cheese wire chuff 😂 I can't wear them anymore but I wore pants under mine.

HouseWithASeaView · 16/11/2025 20:04

I wear pants under mine. I like a nice cotton gusset against my under carriage

Where's the version men are wearing? So fucking depressing.

Auroraloves · 16/11/2025 20:13

I wear one of these with longline knickers up above belly button. I don’t get a VPL

i like the look of the smooth profile, don’t find it depressing. Absolutely my choice to wear it and find it more depressing that some women try to shame others for wearing it 🤷‍♀️

Gettingbysomehow · 16/11/2025 20:15

I'm 63 and you wouldnt catch me wearing shareware. I don't really need to to be fair but back in the days when I was fat I wore a corset so tight to a party that my ankles started swelling horribly and by the end of the night they looked like elephants feet! Truly horrible. I haven't worn shapewear since.

Reminds me of many years ago when I was about 25 my mum gave me an all in one corset thing, can't remember why because in those days I absolutely did not need one. Anyway I wore it to my nan's and was wriggling about a bit and she asked what was wrong so I told her and she made me take it off and threw it in the bin. Then she rang my mum and asked if she knew what year it was? Would be about 1983. Very progressive my nan.

I'll believe it's a genuinely free choice when men are squeezing themselves into similar stuff at the same rates women do.

SconehengeRevenge · 16/11/2025 20:23

I think not wearing pants is minging.

But each to their own

Sweetiedarling7 · 16/11/2025 20:26

I wore these things back in the early 80s. So uncomfortable. I was a size 10 at the time so why I thought I needed to squash my poor body I don’t know. Conditioned sexism clearly.
These days I am a size 16 and wouldn’t give such nonsense houseroom.

Mumdiva99 · 16/11/2025 20:27

They have cotton gussets. They are designed to be worn without underwear. The one you posted is not remotely like a thong or cheese wirey. I used to wear stuff like that in the 90's. How would you hoik the gusset to one side to go for a wee if you had knickers on too? (And yes after a couple of drunken popper incidents we all learnt to hoik and not unpop.)

44PumpLane · 16/11/2025 20:28

I wore similar last night (but it was the one from M&S that allows you to wear your own bra)!

I wore it for me, I found it super silky feeling and comfortable, I was wearing a see through top so it was perfect.

The feminist movement means I get the choice of what I want to wear, and I loved it.

I wore it with knickers underneath though so it wouldn't need to be washed after every use.

Lavender14 · 16/11/2025 20:29

HelenaWaiting · 16/11/2025 19:36

If you wear knickers, your shape wear will last longer.

This was my logic - cleaner needed washed less and therefore more effective for longer. I just was selective about what I wore underneath to ensure no vpl

Cantbloodyrememberthenameonthread · 16/11/2025 20:32

That looks like it would dig into the side of your thighs terribly. That said, I’d wear it as an outfit with sheer black tights and satin heels maybe a blazer.

Millytante · 16/11/2025 20:37

You reminded me of a girl I knew in the 1980s. She always wore full slap, and usually dressed in super-clingy short dresses, and always looked fantabulous. (A dead ringer for Tina Turner.)
Something got us all rambling on about VPLs, and she calmly explained that her only underwear with such dresses was always just a Lillet.
That certainly shut the whole back room of the pub up (mostly us women roaring laughing at all the horrified blokes who’d never imagined such depraved habits existed. Their main objection was that somehow, this wasn't playing fair! Poor lambs)

This option did cross my mind, I won't lie 😂

Oh I think its a pretty ok idea really; it’s just turned into a Comedy Gold moment in my memory, largely because she wasn’t usually given to snappy repartee, being a pretty reserved type despite the wild getups she wore.

I imagine Mooncups are even better than Lillets, having no dangly string!
Go for it, who’s going to dare check?

JDM625 · 16/11/2025 21:21

I would have thought the cut of your particular shapewear could cause a VPL more than knickers underneath? I recently bought these and wore with my regular bra when I wanted a smooth line under a dress https://www.marksandspencer.com/firm-control-magicwear-waist-cincher/p/clp60498572?color=ROSEQUARTZ#intid=pid_pg1pip48g4r9c4

And Yes, I've always worn knickers under shapewear, but the ones I've got are easy to slip off at the loo. No way would I be faffy about trying to fiddle with hooks in my bits. How on earth would you re hook them with no underpants on? 😬

Yeah, there is no squeezing involved in my case, I buy my clothes size. And no one apart from myself has any bearing on my decision on what I wear. 👌🏽

TheThingsYouDoForLurve · 16/11/2025 21:46

Am I looking at a different item of underwear to other posters? The item above is a body, IS knickers?! Why would you wear another pair underneath?!
