To think you don't wear knickers with shapewear?

Full-body shapewear like this.

Can't figure this out.

Knickers underneath give VPL (especially with satin skirts/dresses) ... but no knickers plus the lower hook & eye situation is, well, hurty?! Or am I being a wuss?!

What do you do?

Why do not men do it then?

Some men wear compression shirts. I don’t think a corset would give most men the shape they want somehow.

Heidi2018 · 17/11/2025 12:45

Only on a thread asked by a woman about women's undergarments could people come along and make it about men. This site is gone to the dogs. Sick of it.

To answer the OPs question, I wear seamless thongs under my shapewears!

Now I'm sure I'll be chastised for choosing an underwear that some people don't find comfortable, accused of lying when I say I do find them comfortable, and be given some shit about how men would never wear thongs or shapewear so why am I...

Because we have choice of wearing what we want to.

Well I think this is debatable actually.

What women wear is very much driven by pressure: from society, from the fashion industry, from income restraints, from cultural norms etc.

I mean you only have to look at the Style and beauty forum on MN to see how many women seem to dress and present themselves according to what the current or latest fashion is. Very often regardless of whether it suits them or not.

Sorry but if a "shaping" slip doesn't reshape your body why is it called a "shaping" slip? I genuinely don't understand you wear a " shaping slip" if it does exactly the same job as a traditional slip i.e to stop the dress or skirt clinging to you and enable it hang properly.

I'm not trying to "make you feel bad" about your dress choice. But having lived through the times when the norm was to wear restrictive clothing a nostalgia for those times is perplexing to me.
Especially since the women's clothing that was the norm when I was young really did go along way to restricting a woman's life style and enjoyment of life.

When I used the analogy of self harm I was very careful to say that is my personal point of view. Because I would view voluntarily wearing a corset that restricted my breathing, possibly displaced my internal body organs, restricted what activities I could pursue and was extremely uncomfortable, would constitute self harm to me.

I'm pleased you dress for yourself and you enjoy looking the way you do. But that doesn't mean to say I don't find your choices in any way understandable.

Take it up with M and S; I don’t name them 😆 Smoothing slip would be a better name but probably wouldn’t sell as well.

You might find it interesting that a mantra in the vintage scene is ‘vintage style, not vintage values’. We don’t wear the clothes to indicate our support of out-dated societal and patriarchal expectations, or for the same reasons you described being behind your mother’s forcing of girdles on you as a young woman.

What's with all these disingenuous bullshit comments. Fail to understand my arse. You fully well understand they do it to look good. As is their choice. Because it's hardly rocket science that a slim cinched in waist looks hot and a lardy one - does not.

As for men. They take steroids and all kinds of chemicals to look ripped. They go for hair transplants, pay a lot of money for the privilege. Look up 'looks maxxing', what it entails and how much does it cost. Plus mens shapewear also exists, though it's probably not very popular.

As for 'self harming'. People drink, smoke, use drugs, drunk drive, chronically undersleep, prioritise their job and burn out, eat tons of garbage and get obese, then use chemicals to get slim again, the obese again, eat upfs, lead a sedentary life or engage in extreme sports and do lots of other shit which is 'akin to self harm'. But sure, let's be all mighty and feminist, and police women's underwear. Because you've won the right not to be dictated by men, but someone has to tell those OTHER stupid women what to do, can't have them deciding for themselves now, can we.

I fail to understand what women, who don't wear shapewear, are doing on the thread about it.

Amazing post!! Love how you've expressed your points.

ohwoaw · 17/11/2025 13:00

Eww I’d definitely wear knickers. Seems unhygienic! I don’t think shape wear does much apart from smooth a little bit though. Fat is still fat

Well I understand that some people like to wear vintage clothes but that there is a " vintage scene" is news to me. And that it has a " mantra" surprises me.

I'm trying to get my head round what wearing corsets has to do with the "mantra".

Wearing corsets very much fits into the patriarchal set up of society. Women trussing themselves up to try to look decorative and restricting their ability to do things. While the men wear comfortable clothing that allows them practical freedom.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/11/2025 13:36

It depends on what shapewear it is. If its something like spanx pants then no. But anything bulkier with zips or crotch closures then yes. Anything without pants would need to be washed daily.

sweetpickle2 · 17/11/2025 14:01

The hook and eye is on the bra not the crotch, surely?

I wouldn't wear pants, the shapewear is the pants. I'd wash after one use like pants as well.

Heidi2018 · 17/11/2025 14:09

I have the version of this without the bra attached and it has poppers underneath, not hook and eye.

Tealtoffee21 · 17/11/2025 14:10

I used to wear them back in the day, really didn't need anything holding in or up back then, but they were good for under bias cut dresses. Now I have lumps and bumps to be squashed I wouldn't go near one, i find a slip is great to help clothes skim over my tummies, there's no amount of Lyrca which would flatten my stomach.

If you do go with one of these, no pants are needed - they have cotton gussets, and the poppers aren't near sensitive bits.

I don't know why people are saying it's manky not to wear pants, you do wash them after every wear! Undo the poppers to pee, then just press closed again.

Definately need to try them on, especially to check that boobs won't be squashed, but pants on for that!

Ambridgefan · 17/11/2025 14:11

I would wear pants underneath, you can get those with no visible lines. I wouldn't wear them without anything underneath

I gave up on knickers decades ago. I wear a bra but that is all and if I could get away with not wearing a bra I would

I occasionally wear leggings under my trousers if the weather is particularly cold and I am working outside

I find all underwear especially the granny knickers everyone seems to swear by so uncomfortable and irritating. I really hate the feel of material which then stops and my legs are bare underneath my trousers. It’s a sensory thing, like wearing odd socks etc

You’ll get the MN underwear police after you! I often go without on a warm day, but not in winter 🥶

HighlyUnusual · 17/11/2025 15:33

I use a bamboo cotton panty liner to solve the problem, job done.

OneBookTooMany · 17/11/2025 15:40

Why are they always shown on slim models?

I would like to see an overweight model in a dress, without wearing shapewear and then a photograph of her in the same dress wearing shapewear-although I suppose they could be photo-shopped and therefore useless.

mamagogo1 · 17/11/2025 15:44

I’ve had a predecessor to this and it was very comfortable and didn’t cut up underneath at all, far more comfortable than thongs or Brazilian knickers which ride up. It isn’t though for every day use, think more under a little black dress

katseyes7 · 17/11/2025 15:49

*IvedoneitagainhaventI *
I remember being a young teenager back in the early 70s and my friend's mam bought her and her younger sister 'pantie girdles'.
They were both as thin as rakes. Absolutely ridiculous.

I HATE wearing knickers. They're so uncomfortable and annoying.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 17/11/2025 17:59

I looked at control knickers in M&S prior to getting married, but the fat spilled over the top.

The chatty shop assistant asked whether the groom was going to wear control boxers , & if not why should I bother ?

I’m not sure why you’re singling me out on a thread about shapewear which I didn’t even start, but is it really beyond your wit to consider that some people like a different style to you? Purely for superficial aesthetic reasons?

I wore a corset on my wedding day, danced til 2am and didn’t faint (modern corsets being quite different to the tight lacing whalebone things you may be imaging from the Victorian era or earlier).

Depressing, isn't it.

I don't understand any woman wearing a corset other than perhaps in the bedroom for a laugh. You'd have to undress to use the bathroom if you go out.
That's ridiculous and probably cold too.

I'm not singling you out!
It was you that took issue with my first post and I replied to your comment on it.

But I agree the conversation is rather pointless as we obviously have totally different attitudes to life.
