To ask who actually gets the toppings?

Light hearted of course but this happens so frequently I am genuinely perplexed!

I love ice cream, as do my kids (one is ND so sticks to the same flavour 😂) but me and my daughter like to try the new and unusual ones. As such, we go to the places where you’re paying far more than you ought to now and again because they tend to have the more ‘seasonal’ or unusual flavours and have a new one each month - hopefully you know what type of place I mean.

My question is, who gets the stuff that’s on the top? You know the bits that make it look attractive and lure you in? Because I eat FAR too much ice cream and I have never, ever been given one of the biscuits, big chucks of chocolate, liquorice allsorts or jammy dodgers that are adorning the ice cream!

I’m more than happy with the ice cream I’ve had, this is not a complaint at all but what are they doing with the toppings? Perhaps you work somewhere like this, do they just remove them? Am I just unlucky that I’ve never had just the right portion at the right time? Seems unlikely considering how often I eat it 🙈

I feel like I need to know - help!

Well you ask for it surely? Like sprinkles?

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 16/11/2025 14:49

When I was a child I used to love crunching up a digestive biscuit and sprinkling that on top of ice cream.

SoScarletItWas · 16/11/2025 14:50

I knew this would be about ice cream as soon as I saw the title!

I did once get a massive chunk of chocolate covered Turkish Delight from the top, which was joyous.

With biscuits I’ve always thought they were decorative and disposable because I’d think they would suck up moisture and go soft.

MuttsNutts · 16/11/2025 14:50

What are you on about? You ask (and pay) for toppings if you want them.

Notsurewhatisnormalanymore · 16/11/2025 14:50

No, its the stuff that they put on top to make it look nice, it’s not stuff you ask for - I’ll try and attach a photo.

i don’t really get what you mean. Do you mean you’re ordering a 99 and it comes with no flake, for example?

isitmytime · 16/11/2025 14:53

I get chopped nuts if I go to an icecream shop nephew usually gets chocolate flakes but they’re an addition cost and you just ask for it. They’re not a freebie
if it’s the ones in the tub they scoop from to serve I’ve had bits of tablet, fudge etc as that’s what came out in the scoop I was given…now I want ice cream!

Glad someone understand what I mean, yeah Biscoff Lotus biscuits and Oreo’s definitely go soft but sometimes it might be jelly beans or something. I’m genuinely curious as to where they go? It seems a bit like false advertising if they just go in the bin. I might just hang around in our local farm shop and have a look 😂 more fool me for paying a fiver for an ice cream but I’ve just come back and they’re never piled in the tub or anything. I hope someone who makes it or works somewhere that serves it comments!

You mean like a tub of ice cream with bits on top but you never get the bits on top.

StrokeCity · 16/11/2025 14:54

I know what you mean OP, it's the toppings that are on the actual containers of icecream that they scoop from

Straight to the point 😂 I’ve tried attaching a photo.

You mean mcflurries? Mine is usually full of it but mixed in

mathanxiety · 16/11/2025 14:58

Ask them to scoop your ice cream from the part where the toppings are...

No, she means - in an ice cream parlour they have all the flavours in big silver tubs. If it was Snickers flavour, there would be half a Snickers bar shoved in the front of the container. If it was mince pie there would be mince pies half buried in the ice cream. If it was Turkish Delight, pieces of cut up Fry’s Chocolate Turkish Delight bar.

Seasonal hallowe’en flavours might have meringue ‘bones’ or marshmallow ‘eyeballs’.

JudgeBread · 16/11/2025 14:59

The people who get the first scoops get the toppings! (Or the staff. Ask me how I know 👀)

JaninaDuszejko · 16/11/2025 15:00

This thread is clearly divided into those of us who waste our money on the fancy icecreams and know what you mean and those of us who don't 😂.

I tend to not like the icecreams that have loads of stuff on them (preferences: nut icecreams >fruit icecreams> caramelly icecreams > biscuit/sweet/chocolate icecreams) so I've not really noticed, I'm sure I've had a syrup or piece of fruit or toffee from the top though.

In my local one they scoop from the back and the adornments are on the front, so I’ve always wondered if the LAST people get the toppings…

How dare you describe ice cream as a waste of money, I invest heavily in my ice cream joy 🤣🤣

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/11/2025 15:03

I think it must be the last people, surely they leave them on as long as possible to lure more people in.

Tealtoffee21 · 16/11/2025 15:04

I always figured that the staff get them when the tub is getting empty.

VikingLady · 16/11/2025 15:09

Sometimes I think it depends on cuteness and the susceptibility of the staff. My kids usually get them if it’s a friendly server, I only do if I’m in conversation with them. But that may be just our own parlour!

Yeah that’s what I thought but there’s never loads shoved to the front is there? Even in the more expensive places where there were say 10 large toppings to begin with and half the tray is gone, it appears that the toppings have gone in a regimented fashion (I’m thinking about this too much 😂)

I like sorbet and wouldn't want anything with that. I just like plain sorbet no toppings. 😅

Oh really? I usually have two kids with me and we’re all really polite, maybe they’re not cute enough 😂😂

I’m genuinely not grumbling just hoping someone actually knows ha.
