To ask who actually gets the toppings?

Light hearted of course but this happens so frequently I am genuinely perplexed!

I love ice cream, as do my kids (one is ND so sticks to the same flavour 😂) but me and my daughter like to try the new and unusual ones. As such, we go to the places where you’re paying far more than you ought to now and again because they tend to have the more ‘seasonal’ or unusual flavours and have a new one each month - hopefully you know what type of place I mean.

My question is, who gets the stuff that’s on the top? You know the bits that make it look attractive and lure you in? Because I eat FAR too much ice cream and I have never, ever been given one of the biscuits, big chucks of chocolate, liquorice allsorts or jammy dodgers that are adorning the ice cream!

I’m more than happy with the ice cream I’ve had, this is not a complaint at all but what are they doing with the toppings? Perhaps you work somewhere like this, do they just remove them? Am I just unlucky that I’ve never had just the right portion at the right time? Seems unlikely considering how often I eat it 🙈

I feel like I need to know - help!

I like sorbet and wouldn't want anything with that. I just like plain sorbet no toppings. 😅

I love sorbet as well, have you had a lemon top? You can’t get them in many places but I love them!

This thread is clearly divided into those of us who waste our money on the fancy icecreams and know what you mean and those of us who don't 😂.

I tend to not like the icecreams that have loads of stuff on them (preferences: nut icecreams >fruit icecreams> caramelly icecreams > biscuit/sweet/chocolate icecreams) so I've not really noticed, I'm sure I've had a syrup or piece of fruit or toffee from the top though.

I had no idea what OP meant 😁. Now I’ve seen the photo I guess I would ask if I could have one but not sure if that’s an extra charge?

I wouldn’t actually want the extras as I don’t like things getting in the way of the actual ice cream (or for instance with a bar of chocolate, I don’t like nuts etc getting in the way of the chocolate).

StaringAtTheWater · 16/11/2025 15:17

Oh I get what you're talking about now! I definitely needed the picture!

I think the stuff on top is decorative and not meant to be eaten. My son wanted a biscoff biscuit in his portion so I asked for it, but the lady serving got him a new biscuit from the packet, as she said the one on top wouldn't taste good...

OneFineDay22 · 16/11/2025 15:18

The only place I got to like this, the server kind of mashes the toppings in as they soften some of the ice cream (towards the back, leaving the rest of the toppings at the front), so you get it mixed in. It’s quite nice, although it doesn’t like exactly the same, but I don’t feel short-changed

DisappointedD · 16/11/2025 15:21

I’ve always assumed they were just decorative and not to be eaten. Likely to be stale and not nice (rather than fake).

The people who get the first scoops get the toppings! (Or the staff. Ask me how I know 👀)

👀 do you work in one? What happens when you get to a bit where it would absolutely be awkward not to give it to the person who is being served? Do you have to sneak it out all stealthy between customers? No judgement btw, the ice cream is still usually good enough without the big bits and serving customers all day ought to have some perks 😂

I sadly spend too much time in ice cream shops as my DD is obsessed, I always assumed they were decorative and no one gets them!

But surely that wouldn’t work as then we’d never see them as they would already be gone 🤷‍♀️

PerfunctoryFunk · 16/11/2025 15:24

I feel similarly cheated if I don't get the decorative bits of a Colin Caterpillar.

Ah I kind of assumed I was just unlucky to never get the right bit but then I thought about my ice cream habit and realised that’s not likely. I would love to know if it’s just decorative but I had a liquorice all sort one recently and it had loads of them on top (still don’t get a full one) and it seems wasteful to bin them and I wouldn’t have thought businesses would want to in this climate. Someone mentioned the biscuit ones being soggy so maybe they go in the bin.

dh always end up with huge chunks of milky bar at our local one. I’ve never had that luck with the other flavours they always seem to scoop mine from the bottom

I’ve never got the toppings either, and I’m too scared to ask! I think they are just used for display purposes.

I used to! Obviously we'd give some to customers, especially excited little kids who were pumped to get an Oreo. But we had a sneaky tub behind the counter that we'd drop them in to snack on between customers (we did also have a separate toppings tub so we could add toppings in through the day, so we weren't depriving people too much 🤣)

I once had half a crème egg in crème egg flavour at Easter. The next year they didn’t give me it so I asked, they laughed and gave it to me 🤣

apologies @ilovepixie only skim read, don't like ice-cream personally 🙊....have left the building 😊

Sillysoggyspaniel · 16/11/2025 15:57

I'm also an ice cream purist. Get through two tubs every three days of premium ice cream, never buy toppings when out.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/11/2025 15:59

There is probably a small sign, partially hidden by a chunk of chocolate, that states 'For Display Purposes Only' or 'Serving Suggestion'.
