DDs phone is off/dead should I worry?

DD is 17, we are Scottish so she is already at uni, her birthday is in February. She moved to London for uni.

I messaged her at 5pm, she told me she would call me when she got home at 6/6.30pm. I haven’t heard since and when I message her on WhatsApp it one ticks, when I try to call it goes straight to voicemail.

I know I’m probably panicking unnecessarily but she was pretty clear about not having any plans tonight and it wouldn’t be like her to have her phone off, if her phone dies she usually charges it back pretty quickly and always takes her battery pack with her.

DH thinks I am being dramatic and if we haven’t heard from her by the morning we should worry but she might just be busy with friends.

AIBU to be worried?

FFS it's been 5 and a half hours . Not 2 .

Five and a half hours is nothing!

I used to go days without ringing my mum when I was 18.

When i was 17 too! As when I was 17, i spent the summer abroad.

I only spoke to my mum every couple of days

I think you need to step back OP and be a little less panicky.

I knew she would be at a house party.

We all did that on Thursday nights at Uni

Yep, it must be mortifying for the daughter to be so closely monitored by her family when she is at uni.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 14/11/2025 00:03

I'm so glad!

jamimmi · 14/11/2025 00:03

Hopfully good.news OP, it sounds like phone is either.dead or missing! Phones however are replacable daughters are not. Maybe get her to agree for your ds.to have a tracking app onlyntonbe used in emergancies. It works.for.us and siblings are great at saying when mum worries are OTT. Hope she rings soon

RegimentalSturgeon · 14/11/2025 00:03

The OP has probably wrecked the mood for daughter and the bloke she’s with - double result.

I was very surprised at the split of votes. Then I remembered where I was. 🙄

ExitPursuedByABare · 14/11/2025 00:03

Phew

Ziga · 14/11/2025 00:03

Thank goodness, so pleased you’ve located her.

I find those that post negative or unhelpful comments when a fellow mother is out of her mind with worry absolutely bizarre.

Clerenty · 14/11/2025 00:03

She just called (albeit brief).
The short version of the story in her words is as she left the gym someone stole her phone and she had her bank card etc. in the case (I’ve told her not to do this!), so she got all panicked and at the same time a boy from her course was leaving and offered to take her back to his. She managed to call her bank and get the card cancelled etc. She also said she transferred money to the boys account to order a new phone which will come tomorrow. She then realised she couldn’t remember any of our phone numbers or emails and because of two factor authentication she couldn’t get into any of her socials to message us.
She then decided to go out for some drinks and has now decided to stay at the boys tonight as it’s raining and she didn’t want to get wet going back to hers but couldn’t get the tube either as she doesn’t have a phone or bank card!

Bloody teenagers!!

That’s good. I can go to bed now.

Me too….I was worried for OP 😊

No wonder a generation of young people are being breed with no resilience. I would have hated being tracked by my parents when I was at uni

Ah no!!! Your poor dd!

but well done to her for sorting everything so quickly. My DD’s would not have thought to do any of that!

I never wrote two hours, did I. I wrote a couple of hours.

The definition of the word "couple" is

"an indefinite small number"

Well that’s you and not the OP and her daughter. 🤷🏻‍♀️

And I suspect that actually if you had agreed to call your parents at a certain time and then didn’t and they couldn’t reach you they would have been concerned.
I speak to my parents on the phone regularly sometimes it’s every couple of days and other times it’s almost week or more between calls. And we don’t worry about one another. But if I had told them I was going to call and then didn’t they would be concerned and try and check in with me. And I’m mid 30’s!

Bloody teenagers!!

Its scary sometimes how dependant we are on phones.

I thought about this month. That if I lost my phone/ it broke - I wouldnt know anyones phone numbers.

And i also woukdnt be able to get into my faceboom or instagram as to login to them, they now send two factor identification text messages to phone numbers

If you lose your phone, you cannot log in.

I have now put all my phone numbers on an email to myself, so i have a back up

She didnt say she was going to call.

Her mother asked her to call and she agreed. There is a difference.

Worknightmareagain · 14/11/2025 00:10

So happy to hear she is ok OP. I get it, I'd be beside myself in your shoes, London is a long way away. Sleep well!

The teen had her phone and bank card stolen what are you on about. She also was going to contact her mum and she didnt hence the worry. What u wrote is silly and doesn't even fit whats happened.

MummytoE · 14/11/2025 00:09

Tell me that's a joke

Of course not. Seeing as I provided the definition.

People use the word "couple " to describe an indefinite small number of something.

Blump2783 · 14/11/2025 00:12

Pleased to see you have located her and hopefully once the adrenaline drops you can sleep well tonight. It is mad how losing a phone can shut off someone's life and ability to access things.

LushLemonTart · 14/11/2025 00:12

Thank goodness @Clerenty . I had this with ds1 once. He'd lost his phone. I was told to email him by a helpful mumsnetter. He was a lot older but always messaged straight away. This had been a day of no reply. Anyway he replied by email apologising.

So glad you've had good news.

jamimmi · 14/11/2025 00:12

Dd has managed very well to sort all this, im glad shes ok, but shame.you messed up her night with the new man 😂 all be it with good reason. Tell her to write down all your numbers and emails.on a bit of paper ( old school i know) she then can at least contact you if anything like.this happens again.
