DDs phone is off/dead should I worry?

DD is 17, we are Scottish so she is already at uni, her birthday is in February. She moved to London for uni.

I messaged her at 5pm, she told me she would call me when she got home at 6/6.30pm. I haven’t heard since and when I message her on WhatsApp it one ticks, when I try to call it goes straight to voicemail.

I know I’m probably panicking unnecessarily but she was pretty clear about not having any plans tonight and it wouldn’t be like her to have her phone off, if her phone dies she usually charges it back pretty quickly and always takes her battery pack with her.

DH thinks I am being dramatic and if we haven’t heard from her by the morning we should worry but she might just be busy with friends.

AIBU to be worried?

I never wrote two hours, did I. I wrote a couple of hours.

The definition of the word "couple" is

"an indefinite small number"

The definition is certainly not that. The definition is two. The informal usage is a small number. You need to read the full Google search result.

She just called (albeit brief).
The short version of the story in her words is as she left the gym someone stole her phone and she had her bank card etc. in the case (I’ve told her not to do this!), so she got all panicked and at the same time a boy from her course was leaving and offered to take her back to his. She managed to call her bank and get the card cancelled etc. She also said she transferred money to the boys account to order a new phone which will come tomorrow. She then realised she couldn’t remember any of our phone numbers or emails and because of two factor authentication she couldn’t get into any of her socials to message us.
She then decided to go out for some drinks and has now decided to stay at the boys tonight as it’s raining and she didn’t want to get wet going back to hers but couldn’t get the tube either as she doesn’t have a phone or bank card!

Bloody teenagers!!

This is wonderful news to hear she is safe and well, not great her phone was stolen but that can be replaced.

Also you are not dramatic to have worried about not hearing from your daughter, unfortunately we live in a society that has cause for concern especially on young teenage children.

Brilliant news otherwise and now you can rest assured we all can now xxx

I'm glad you will sleep well tonight OP.

You know now that she has a boyfriend that she 'bumped' into :) If it progresses, It might be no harm for your DS to ask her for his social media contact name/ph no. in case anything like this happens again.

The teen had her phone and bank card stolen what are you on about. She also was going to contact her mum and she didnt hence the worry. What u wrote is silly and doesn't even fit whats happened.

Yes and her mother didn’t need to even know about it. All unnecessary drama

I’m very pleased op. We can all sleep well now! For what it’s worth I would have been beside myself as well x

Finto1111 · 14/11/2025 00:09

She didnt say she was going to call.

Her mother asked her to call and she agreed. There is a difference.

Stop splitting hairs. She made an agreement that she was calling tonight. It matters not who initiated that agreement.
You’re just out to be argumentative!

You are wrong. I am not sure why this is so important to you.

I will include more of the definition this time.

Couple : an indefinite small number.
Eg "he hoped she'd be better in a couple of days"

businessflop25 · 14/11/2025 00:16

@Clerentyglad to hear she is safe and well.

You told her what to do.

A very strange thing to say to an adult woman. 😂

SquareEyedSue · 14/11/2025 00:18

I am glad she’s safe. It made me think about what it must be like for those parents for whom the outcome is not so happy. But I am glad that isn’t you. Sleep well.

I grew up with no family giving a toss about me?

I won't take that from you.

I have reported you for abuse.

Thank goodness, you can sleep easy.

I would ask why your DD couldn't use the boy's email to message any of you... I realise it's not the fastest but expect you'd be checking everything? Anyway very happy for you!

it is not abuse. You said it yourself. You were off out at Uni and didn’t speak to family for days. This does not mean it is anyway normal and then you felt you needed to kick the OP when she was worried. You came back in when her child was located and accused her of panicking and you were condescending to her. There was no need at all.
