DDs phone is off/dead should I worry?

DD is 17, we are Scottish so she is already at uni, her birthday is in February. She moved to London for uni.

I messaged her at 5pm, she told me she would call me when she got home at 6/6.30pm. I haven’t heard since and when I message her on WhatsApp it one ticks, when I try to call it goes straight to voicemail.

I know I’m probably panicking unnecessarily but she was pretty clear about not having any plans tonight and it wouldn’t be like her to have her phone off, if her phone dies she usually charges it back pretty quickly and always takes her battery pack with her.

DH thinks I am being dramatic and if we haven’t heard from her by the morning we should worry but she might just be busy with friends.

AIBU to be worried?

Is she on the tube? Student bar underground? I’m not surprised you are worried but I’d try and hold it in for now.

Bigtreeesss · 13/11/2025 20:52

can you contact a friend? I’d be worried

As far as I know she can’t enter the student bar as they will ask for her student ID and she’s underage. She lives walking distance from uni so never really uses the tube.
I want to be calm but I am finding it hard not to panic. If her phone was on I’d worry less and assume she’d just fallen asleep or got busy chatting but she really never lets her phone die for too long.

Omg it's only been a few hours. I get that you're worried but please try to calm down and be rational.

Unfortunately I don’t have the contact details of her friends, I have considered maybe seeing if I can contact her uni accommodation?

I think it’s too early to panic
she will have got distracted by friends

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 13/11/2025 20:56

It’s possible her phone is lost / stolen - can you email her ?

Generslly I think it’s a bit early to panic but I do understand why you are concerned

WackyRacers · 13/11/2025 20:58

Could she just have got chatting? Also if it’s WhatsApp sometimes messages just don’t deliver, doesn’t mean phone is dead. Are you an iPhone family? Can you look on find my iPhone?

RebeccaDecember · 13/11/2025 20:58

Could she have lost her phone or it’s been stolen? Does she have a laptop - email or Facebook message her? Hope she’s ok x

WackyRacers · 13/11/2025 20:58

@Ghostsghoulsteenagers that’s a good point, try her social media Op?

I hope you hear from her soon OP 🤞 , try not to panic x

Clerenty · 13/11/2025 21:02

I have tried to message her on instagram.
I don’t have her location anymore as she said it made her feel watched, I think some of her friends might though.

Hope she’s ok OP ….I get you cos I’m a worrier myself

2GreatFatSquirrels · 13/11/2025 21:03

Her phone will just have died while she’s out or she’s dropped and broken it. Try and relax. If something had happened to her it’s unlikely she’d have had the ability to switch her phone off.

chocolateanddietcoke · 13/11/2025 21:06

Thinking of you OP! Sure she’s fine and will be very annoyed you were worrying so much, but it’s not something we turn off is it!

lornatetta · 13/11/2025 21:06

I'd be more concerned if her phone was ringing and she wasn't answering. Her phone has probably run out of battery. Especially if she hadn't charged it since last night.

I don't think ringing her accommodation to check on her when she's a couple of hours late in ringing you will help if she felt watched by you having her location.
She's probably forgotten what she said or got a better offer like having a drink with a friend, or just decided not to check in. If she lives near the uni it's central London. It's a safe and busy place especially at 5/6pm!
Try not to worry
I'm with DH

I think I would worry less if she was a little older but I still find my 17 year old being 500+ miles away hard to deal with!

She's probably switched it off, then. So she doesn't feel stalked.

lostintranslation148 · 13/11/2025 21:10

I've had this a couple of times with DS who I worry about because he is autistic. It's always turned out fine, I'm sure it will be fine but I would worry too.

FriendlyHedgehogMeow · 13/11/2025 21:14

Try not to worry probably she will have got caught up with friends etc (thinking of you though OP as I am a worrier) xxx

slipperypenguin · 13/11/2025 21:15

has she still not got in touch?

missymousey · 13/11/2025 21:16

I think YABU. Of course you will worry but if she's old enough to be at university then she's old enough to not be chased around by her mother if she's a few hours late. I was a Scottish 17 year old at uni in London and I am glad it was 20 years ago before constant contact was required.

Clerenty · 13/11/2025 21:16

slipperypenguin · 13/11/2025 21:15

Nope, not heard anything. I’m not sure when I’m allowed to worry!

OP posts:
TreeCake · 13/11/2025 21:16

She’s so young so I can see why you’re worried. As lots of others said, she may have lost track of time and be somewhere without signal or her battery is dead.
I’d be the same though and would probably contact her accommodation to see if they can get hold of her.
