DDs phone is off/dead should I worry?

DD is 17, we are Scottish so she is already at uni, her birthday is in February. She moved to London for uni.

I messaged her at 5pm, she told me she would call me when she got home at 6/6.30pm. I haven’t heard since and when I message her on WhatsApp it one ticks, when I try to call it goes straight to voicemail.

I know I’m probably panicking unnecessarily but she was pretty clear about not having any plans tonight and it wouldn’t be like her to have her phone off, if her phone dies she usually charges it back pretty quickly and always takes her battery pack with her.

DH thinks I am being dramatic and if we haven’t heard from her by the morning we should worry but she might just be busy with friends.

AIBU to be worried?

I would ring halls too, otherwise you won't sleep a wink tonight x

G1ngerbread · 13/11/2025 23:08

OP I live quite close to your daughter’s halls by the sound of it. Possibly within a few mins walk. Phone snatching is rife here.

CanadianCooper · 13/11/2025 23:08

This happened to me/my mum when I move to London, but I was in the cinema so had switched my phone off. However, it’s now been many hours since you heard from her, so I would calls the halls now, If she’s not returned, I would call the police at midnight.

I’m not too sure how far the gym is from the halls, her accommodation is just south of the river near Waterloo.
I think I’m just going to give them a call so I can at least sleep!

She is in a very busy area then, so in all probability is ok but I totally understand giving the halls a call. I hope you they can confirm quickly to you that she is ok and you can have a good sleep.

She was just leaving the gym, I had tried to ring her at 4.30 and she replied with a voice note saying she was in the gym. She then messaged at 5 saying she was just about to leave the gym so would message when she got home as she had to stop and get something to make for dinner on the way. I asked if she had any plans for the evening and she said no nothing tonight so I asked to call and she said yeah how about 6/6.30. At 6 I messaged letting her know I was free and she could call any time and it didn’t deliver. I rang a bit later and it went to voicemail. I’ve tried to ring a couple more times and I’ve messaged her instagram etc.

She might have met someone in gym from uni & gone for a few drinks or gone home & fell asleep .
Is the gym far from Accomodation , does she walk or bus ? ..
I’d ring Accomodation alright OP .

Now I’m extremely panicked, we called they sent someone to check and DD isn’t in her room. They told us they spoke to one of the people she shares the kitchen etc. with who said that they haven’t seen her since this morning. There advice was if we don’t hear from her by morning to call the police but she may have just gone out or be at a friends.

Now I’m absolutely beside myself with worry.

DH thinks we need to sleep and if w haven’t heard by morning call the police, I don’t think I can sleep!

No I would be calling the police. You know she’s not gone out drinking. She said she would be getting her food and going home. You should contact the police

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/11/2025 23:25

Oh op 🥺

Can you call the police now? Not sure what they'd say but it could be worth a try as you wont sleep well tonight

Sincerely hope that shes just met up with some mates xx

not helpful. OP, she is almost certainly just out with friends. Hammering with rain down here so possibly just waiting it out in someone else's halls or a common room/bar etc. phone is probably simply out of battery and she has no idea you're up and worried (because she 17, why would she?)

ArcheryAnnie · 13/11/2025 23:28

I have no advice to give, just want to say that I'll be sitting here hoping you hear from her soon. (I don't think there's an age when we don't worry about them.)

Call the police and say what? good grief I am surprised any teenager or young adult allows their parents their phone number all, maybe call the SAS they might help

Agree this is what i think has happened, op x

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 13/11/2025 23:30

Chances are it’s nothing, but considering it’s out of character + she said she’d call, yes, I’d be calling everyone available, police included.

Have a bit more empathy.
Her mum is worried sick.

GovernmentFundedSteak · 13/11/2025 23:31

Oh gosh, how scary. I'd call the police tonight. I wouldn't sleep until I had. Mind you, I probably wouldn't sleep after either.

No harm ringing the police ..
Have you any numbers of who she pals around with at UNI ? , a way of getting them maybe ?
What about other students in accommodation that she is friendly with that might know who she could be with x

Op, do any of the flatmates have her friends on social media maybe? Can you ask the uni to ask?

Really?

Aren't you the one currently starting nonsense posts?

OP this happened to me a few times when ds was at uni in another country! There was always a rational explanation, but one night I was up until 2am in tears. Then his friend messaged me. Ds' phone wasn't working. Another time he ran out of credit. It's usually the phone to blame!

Before the days of mobile phones when I was at uni, I put my poor mum through hell until the early hours on a regular basis. Pub lock ins were one regular occurrence.

Please try and let us know what's happening. X

I'm reporting you for being an absolute bellend

Clerenty · 13/11/2025 23:32

DH is really against calling the police right now, he thinks we need to give it until at least 1/2am incase she’s just on a night out/ran into friends etc.
DS has decided to message one of her uni friends who he has just remembered he follows on instagram to see if she knows or has DDs location at least.
DS is pretty worried though as while DD is an outgoing girl she is also practically glued to her phone and this is out of character.
