DDs phone is off/dead should I worry?

DD is 17, we are Scottish so she is already at uni, her birthday is in February. She moved to London for uni.

I messaged her at 5pm, she told me she would call me when she got home at 6/6.30pm. I haven’t heard since and when I message her on WhatsApp it one ticks, when I try to call it goes straight to voicemail.

I know I’m probably panicking unnecessarily but she was pretty clear about not having any plans tonight and it wouldn’t be like her to have her phone off, if her phone dies she usually charges it back pretty quickly and always takes her battery pack with her.

DH thinks I am being dramatic and if we haven’t heard from her by the morning we should worry but she might just be busy with friends.

AIBU to be worried?

I still haven’t heard from her and the messages I sent at 6pm still haven’t delivered.

DD didn’t like me having her location when she was in S6 so I’ve never gotten it from her again (it wasn’t an argument she just asked to turn it off and I said okay).
We don’t message or call often, for example before our messages this afternoon I last messaged her yesterday, we don’t call often either but I can normally see that she’s been online on WhatsApp which tends to settle my worrying.

DH thinks we need to leave it for tonight incase she just got home and fell asleep but her phone died or didn’t connect to the internet or similar.

I‘m not sure I’ll sleep though!

When you messaged her OP at 5 & she said she would call you at 6/6.30 , what was she doing then ?

FriendlyHedgehogMeow · 13/11/2025 22:47

@Clerenty so sorry OP you must be so worried. How is your DH? I am sure all will be ok, I was a 17 year old away from home at uni and always making last minute plans or falling asleep and worrying my parents. If you want maybe get accomodation a call tonight to check. Or do you have any of her friends numbers or social media to contact? Take care xxx

She was just leaving the gym, I had tried to ring her at 4.30 and she replied with a voice note saying she was in the gym. She then messaged at 5 saying she was just about to leave the gym so would message when she got home as she had to stop and get something to make for dinner on the way. I asked if she had any plans for the evening and she said no nothing tonight so I asked to call and she said yeah how about 6/6.30. At 6 I messaged letting her know I was free and she could call any time and it didn’t deliver. I rang a bit later and it went to voicemail. I’ve tried to ring a couple more times and I’ve messaged her instagram etc.

I would also worry if she said she would call at 630! Hope she calls soon

DH is worried but thinks we just need to ride it out tonight. He tends to be quite a non-urgent and calm
person.

She's at uni. She is going to be having fun and hopefully doing sone studying, not hanging off the phone to you all the time.

We really don’t call often, we message at least once a day but calls aren’t often, I wouldn’t be worried if she hadn’t said she was going to call.

Have you looked on messenger to see if it shows when she was last active. Does she have any siblings/cousins who may have her on Snapchat, I think it shows location. My son has done this several times, gone home and fallen asleep, phone may be off and charging. You’ll probably get a message in the middle of the night. Totally understand why you’re panicking but most likely everything will be okay.

Cat1504 · 13/11/2025 22:57

My kids are 34 32 and 28 ….the last thing I do before I go to sleep is check when they were last on WhatsApp…..so don’t let people make you feel you are over reacting about a 17 year old who last message was that she would speak to you at 6pm….she will be fine OP ….but I would be worrying same as you ….try get some sleep

Luckykittycat · 13/11/2025 22:57

I hope you hear from her soon. I would definitely be contacting her uni accommodation if that’s the only method you have of making sure she is okay.

She doesn’t have Facebook or Snapchat, her brother has checked to see if she has been active anywhere else and all her last seens are either pre 4pm or at 5pm, she read a message he sent her early today just after 5 but never replied or reacted to it.
He also messaged her closest friend from school (DS is only a year older than DD so knows lots of her friends) and she has said she hasn’t heard from DD since about 3 today.

I hope she makes contact soon. Its likely something simple like a charging cable has broken or similar. That seems to have happened to me a few times.

LoudSnoringDog · 13/11/2025 22:59

Is she in halls?

DH has said at the very least we should wait until midnight/1am incase she decided to go out with friends but it would be very out of character for DD to not charge her phone up, post a story on instagram or update me that she wouldn’t be calling anymore. She’s not the type of girl where this happens often, in fact this is the first time this has ever happened.

Yes and they are staffed 24/7 so we can call them.

I understand your worry as I am a worrier in the same but as a person not in this situation now I can be logical and say that she is most likely ok. Just because a phone is dead it doesn't mean something has happened to the phone owner, although I totally get your thought process as I can go down the same path.
I live in London and came here for uni over 20 years ago. I would suggest that it is very unlikely something has happened to her, especially at that time of day. More likely she will have lost her phone or been pick pocketed if anything has happened.
Are you able to share what part of London she is living in? Also, how far is the gym from her halls? If something bad had happened I would have thought you would have heard by now if she was carrying any form of identification.

PollyannaGladGame · 13/11/2025 23:03

I’m going to go against the grain here and say contact her accommodation.

She’s young and you’re worried, I have DD in first year (18 but she’s late summer so only just when she went) and if I were in your shoes I’d just have to. Even though I am certain she’ll be fine and there will be a boring reason.

I worry about the children, but having recently joined a FB group for parents at the uni I realise I am much more chilled than I thought. A recent post had a mum contacting security for a welfare check much sooner than I would have done so do be assured they’re used to this!

LoudSnoringDog · 13/11/2025 23:03

I would give until midnight and then ask halls staff to check her accom. She may be pissed off you’ve checked on her but saying she would call at 6.30 and then going literally no contact is enough for you to say you were concerned and needed reassurance

FriendlyHedgehogMeow · 13/11/2025 23:03

Please give yourself peace of mind and give halls a call x

Ciribiner · 13/11/2025 23:04

Another saying contact the halls x

Branster · 13/11/2025 23:06

It is quite likely her phone has been stolen.
Or, for some reason, she turned it off.
I would call the halls residence now to ask them to check on her.

Walkerzoo · 13/11/2025 23:06

Another one for ringing the halls.

I’m not too sure how far the gym is from the halls, her accommodation is just south of the river near Waterloo.
I think I’m just going to give them a call so I can at least sleep!

I would also guess her phone may have been snatched
