i don’t think they do about non white people. There’s always someone saying “Ah, but…” about black British people….
My ethnicity? Well, I’d tick White British if I had to tick a box.

Out of interest, if you moved to China and had a child, would you describe your child as Chinese while you remained British?

There have been Jewish people in Britain since 1066-albeit with a somewhat checkered history. Certainly there have been many Jewish immigrants since 164something. Vile things were said about them too….

Exactly. Jews officially returned in 1656 due to Cromwell's edict, though there was a small hidden community who'd remained since the 1290 expulsion. Most modern British Jews though date their ancestry back to the 1880s Eastern European wave of migrats.

The child might well be Chinese culturally, depending on the kind of upbringing they had. By nationality, they could be, too. Not ethnically, though.

Halfwaytheree · 11/11/2025 01:59

@CurlewKate I thought it was quite obvious to tell the difference (in what is meant by ethnicity and nationality.) Someone who is black for example, likely is not English by bloodline. So whilst they might have British nationality, they are not English by ethnicity. Your ethnicity is your DNA and can’t be changed, your citizenship can be changed.

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 11/11/2025 05:58

Wonder if this was a racial attack?

Can you tell if someone is English by looking at their DNA?

Well according to my 23andme, I'm 99.7% british and irish and they can even pinpoint the areas of the countries where my ancestry is found. So yes, I suppose they can

Most probably a man suffering with paranoid schizophrenia and (yet again!) a failure of a hugely underfunded mental health system to support and monitor people in the community - ‘care in the community’ my arse - everyone’s a loser in this - I suspect the same with the recent train incident. My son is a schizophrenic and currently under a Section 37/41 so I know what I am talking about.

My thoughts are first and foremost with the victims - these situations are tragic.

As a society we seriously need to reevaluate how we support those with psychotic illnesses.

My son is mixed race and I am sick to death of reading threads about immigration, doctors & engineers, gallows etc etc - statistically immigrants are more likely to suffer from psychosis because of experiencing more adverse life events and trauma not that anybody gives a fuck of course.

Anyway, apologies for waffling but schizophrenia is highly complex and needs to be managed properly is my point.

YoMyFoot · 11/11/2025 08:37

If you look at knife crime statistics by ethnicity, there's a trend

Yes, ancestry tests trace your ethnic background. But also I’m sure in police investigations, they can conduct advanced analysis of unknown DNA to infer there is X% likelihood the DNA belonged to someone of Y ethnicity to help them find who the DNA belongs to.

I agree but as you mentioned immigration, perhaps this should be a reason to limit the amount of incoming migrants. People seeking asylum may present with severe mental health challenges that the country is not equipped to handle. If they’re coming in, they need immediate care and probably at a level that the country can’t fully conduct given the current state of mental health services.

Halfwaytheree · 11/11/2025 12:13

In cases where offenders purposely target public transport like trains or bus stops, could they be banned permanently from the transport network? I get that monitoring their attendance at bus stops isn’t going to happen up and down the country, but surely something must be done to protect staff and passengers if these offenders use public transport as part of their MO

Potentially but unconfirmed. He likely targeted her for a reason though, even if that was gender.

I don’t know that area very well, at that time of day would there be other people at the bus stop/shopping centre/train station? Or would she have been alone?

Poverty, absent ‘fathers’, racism, popular youth culture - people aren’t inherently bad or damaged - life experiences shape you - some get away and do well, some don’t - one of my kids is schizophrenic and convicted of ‘attempted murder’, the other has a 1st in Law from Manchester University - both happened in the same year - we are not well off - what’s your point because I smell a racist

Halfwaytheree · 11/11/2025 13:40

It seems that Katie Fox had autism (her friend posted a tribute message mentioning this on X).

Hoping the horrid bastard who attacked her didn’t target her due to this.

It's a really busy part of Birmingham, even in the evening. I don't live in Birmingham but I know it well and I've never been around that area when it hasn't been busy. Unfortunately, as I and many others could testify, Birmingham is the kind of place where being surrounded by people doesn't stop assaults happening. I've got to go there soon and, whereas in the past I might have made a day of it, my mindset now is 'get in, go to where you are going, get out.' Perhaps I should also be hoping I don't get stabbed or blown up on the train.

Bad life experiences are never an excuse for murder. It's disgusting. Makes me wonder why certain groups are like this and why other groups are not.

Your DC who got done for attempted murder, why the quotes, should be locked up away from the public so they don't harm others. I'm glad the victim survived your child.

How is ethnicity DNA when many of what we call ethnicities have only been around for a few centuries? When does being in a location become part of your DNA?

They will always be an outsider in China.

I did this, as did many in our circle. We just accept it.

We don’t have a human right to proclaim ourselves ‘Chinese’ or insist that growing up there makes you Chinese. We may know a bit more about China than some third gen who has never stepped foot in China, make no mistake. But only one of us could be considered marginally Chinese. The only edge case is mixed race children—and European mixed race children at that.

If you aren’t an ethnic Han nor belong to one of their designated minority groups, well, you aren’t Chinese and never will be. It’s fine, maybe Britain should try it.

I used to catch the train from Moor Street a couple of years ago at about 8:30pm so had to walk through that area. It feels edgy and you had to be on full alert 100% of time. There are people around but not many shoppers or office workers etc.

Fixed. Why different individuals react during differently to different life circumstances is anybody’s guess.

I suggest you look at articles on psychopathic children. There was an article about them in the NYT some years ago now. Terrifying and they are just born that way, nothing you can do but hopefully manage it. Tendencies towards criminality are inheritable (particularly in the case of sex crimes), we have seen this in adoption studies (kids tend to be more like their bio family than their adoptive parents, which should just be totally obvious)
