Teen sexy halloween costume for girls only

AIBU to think the whole sexy halloween costume for girls only is getting worse each year.

I am not a prude honestly and there are bigger problems in the world I know but….

So many youngish (year 10-12) teens posting on social media dressed in push up basques, micro minis, micro shorts bare legs and pouting at the camera and worse. Then the boys all dressed in jeans t-shirts and normal costumes not a pout in sight.

Don’t get me wrong women should wear what they want but it seems social media is dictating that girls should be more and more provocative and boys can just be boys.

AIBU to think in 2025 this is pretty sad.

But we live in a society where women are objectified as soon as they reach puberty.

We always have.

Which is why I was asking why things are not changing.

Obviously she mistakenly thought it was fancy dress tarts and vicars but this was a pivotal moment in the film where the mistake about the type of party highlighted the absurdity of the expectations on women. She also logged her weight every day etc..

I added an edit.
The party was for a bunch of "older" folks.

My dd 14 went to a halloween party in a corset and mini skirt so did all her friends. She looked stunning i love that she has such body confidence

That's your point isn't it - society hasn't changed.
Back in the 90s (when Bridget's diary first started) she felt she had to be thin and wear tiny skirts.
Why? Because society told her.
But I agree with you....the question is why?

YANBU. Not sure when Halloween became an occasion to dress like a stripper.

Since mean girls film

Needmorelego · 05/11/2025 13:18

I suppose it is somewhat biology.
Attracting a mate and all that...

All her friends wore corsets and mini skirts? Like every single one?

Which is why I was asking why things are not changing.

Things don’t change by reining in what girls should be allowed to wear!

Things change by no longer tolerating all the other things you correctly identify as terrible things that happen TO our girls daily, perpetrated by men - harassment etc.

I think your own thought process has become twisted. You are asking ‘why are girls doing xyz?’, instead of why are men/boys continuing to do xyz to our girls?’

Don’t slut shame the girls - once at an age, they can wear what they want.
Shine a light on the boys - who are being too slow on the uptake that their number is up. They can no longer treat girls the way their male ancestors did and get away with it.

The ones that came to ours first did I don't know about the girls at the actual party

I think I have very clearly blamed society.
I have also clearly suggested that it’s not free choice.
I have directly stated I think it’s misogynistic

Even from my OP I have questioned the disparity in pressure on girls and not on boys.

I also highlighted the pressure on women in my explanation about Bridget Jones.

I think it is clear from all of my posts that I blame society not women and girls.

As the mother of a 19yo Dd I am saddened by how little has changed in the last 30 years since I was that age. But I don't think dressing up in sexy halloween outfits is here or there and has been going on for a looong time.

That’s fatuous though as we all make up ‘society’.
You are trying to sound smarter and less judgmental than you actually are, and it’s not working.

You are angry at girls dressing too provocatively when boys don’t. But then claim it’s due to society-driven misogyny?
No - I think your judgement of the way women dress is misogynistic, as well as your desire to stop those choices being made.

Sure - there’s a lot of work to be done with BOYS and MEN to address the way they treat and think about women/girls (who have done nothing wrong and should carry on as they please).
Creating posts decrying the mindset of ‘girls’ dressing in skirts way too short etc does NOT help - it feeds the misogyny machine.

I agree. I have seen the dress up for years but it was definitely worse this year in regard to pornification of clothing choice.

I think it was the stark contrast in how extreme the girls were dressed compared to the boys in pretty much every group. It smacks of societies expectations on women and very little free choice.

It’s hard to un see the misogyny once you see it. But probably harder to rid ourselves of the cognitive dissonance that it’s our free choice.

Oh, don’t be so patronising. Really!

Lalalol · 05/11/2025 13:42

I feel the same op. My niece and her friends (aged 16) all went to a Halloween party and 90% of them were in some variation of a corset and shorts/short skirt. Incredibly sexualised

i I tried asking why they all dressed like that but not sure she’d given it much thought. I found it all really sad

You are projecting quite a bit.

You say that women and girls should carry on as they please which is exactly what I said in my OP.

I am questioning the fact that the costumes were perhaps not true self expression because nearly every girl was wearing exactly the same thing and in stark contrast the boys were not.

As you say we do all make up society but unfortunately internalised misogyny is something we have to accept is present in females as well as men. It’s society driven and we are all products of societal norms.

BTW. I am not angry I am saddened.

We will have to agree to disagree because our thoughts on this are very far apart.
