Disincentivising anyone to strive to earn over 45k a year is a bizarre strategy for growth i feel

Why is anyone surprised?

"Tax the rich" ALWAYS ends up with people who aren't rich, footing the bill.

This is why socialism never works, because "rich" and "privilege" always just ends meaning having anything slightly more than the bare minimum.

I think you make a good point.

Presumably it will be 45k today, and then gradually get reduced?

PeachySmile2 · 02/11/2025 17:35

£45k is a pittance. It is the new £30k. You cannot run a household with kids on £45k.

I imagine so.
It started off as being farmers and parents who choose independent schools. Most on here were happy with that because it didn't impact them.
Now the definition is changing to bring more people into scope and it is impacting them, they aren't as happy.

Absolute classic socialist playbook.

Should I not go into work tomorrow then seeing as apparently I’m not a working person?

No one has said you’re not a working person

TightOnes · 02/11/2025 17:36

twistyizzy · 02/11/2025 17:32

But they are meant to be intelligent, Oxford educated etc. So how can they be THIS incompetent? They are meant to represent the best of state + Oxford education. So I put it to you that this is intentional because to be this incompetent with the supposed quality of education they've had is mind-blowing.

Probably something to do with the nature of politics itself

Hotflushesandchilblains · 02/11/2025 17:37

Not far over this on a fairly senior nhs grade - and as a single person, I am struggling.

FourIsNewSix · 02/11/2025 17:37

It is something like a top 1/3 of earners. I suppose it depends on how it progress from that. If the increased taxation is only on a salary above that threshold, it won't have that big effect on people earning 45-55k and will hit more above that, which is top 1/5 of earners.

I'm afraid that it is the art of possible.

Maybe but I'm not as generous.

Nolletimiere · 02/11/2025 17:37

Well, on a brighter note, Labour are successfully tackling inflation and the COL.

Oh wait.

Middlechild3 · 02/11/2025 17:38

Sillysoggyspaniel · 02/11/2025 15:59

No, but most people work hard and try and progress their careers in order to earn more. And now they are being penalised for doing so.

Most people don't. Its like a pyramid, not everyone gets to the pointer end of salaries.

Coconutter24 · 02/11/2025 17:36

Who are the people who don’t fall into the description? Working people still?

TightOnes · 02/11/2025 17:38

Kinda wish we just stuck with Sunak

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/11/2025 17:38

I earn under 26k, at 59, I work bloody hard.

Rexinasaurus · 02/11/2025 17:38

MookieCat · 02/11/2025 16:28

I have never in my entire life earned anywhere near £45 k. My highest salary was £32,000. And I have three postgrad degrees and work in a professional role.

But I think this Government is fucking nuts. And is going out of its way to penalise and demonise the very people who have played by all the rules, tried to build a life and who have some aspiration. It's sick-making.

And the very people who pay for the disgustingly bloated benefits system this country has. And Labour are making it worse and worse. Let’s take away the 2 child cap! Let’s give more people free money! Let’s penalise small businesses who employ lots of workers! Let’s penalise people trying to better themselves. Etc

What people don’t understand is that when the main tax payers are punished - it trickles down to everybody. Everybody suffers. Less tax gets paid, fewer jobs are available, wealth leaves the country. Who then pays the huge tax bill for all of the lovely free benefits? Labour have no economic sense whatsoever. Instead of building up they are tearing down.

I agree.

He had commercial acumen, and strong ethics.

Starmer and Reeves, not so much - the latter is a pathological liar. And how many times did Sunak call out Starmer during the election campaign?

I'm quite surprised to have finally found someone on this website with a functional brain.

Thanks ☺️ I hate this misconception that if you work hard, you earn a lot, and if you don’t earn much, it’s because you don’t work hard (or aren’t clever, or don’t try). My DM worked her arse off and never made more than minimum wage.

Those ‘rich VAT payers’ to £45k in a bit over a year is fast.

Who would have thought Labour would broaden who they hit up for tax.

You might want to consider tang ping.

The social covenant between taxpayer and government has well and truly broken (thanks to Labour).

100%.

Exactly. Like with IHT. I recall speaking with my neighbour over the bins on bin day and he was scoffing at IHT and 'only the rich pay it'.

I just asked him 'How much do you think your house is worth?'. The slow dawning horror that came over his face was something to behold.

100% - not much shocks me with this lot, but one wonders where will be post budget?

My DS is 24 and earnings £30k. £26k is honestly a pittance.

I assume like a PP you used to earn a lot more but now your kids (if you had any) are grown, your mortgage is paid off and thus you can make do on this?

Didimum · 02/11/2025 17:43

TesChique · 02/11/2025 15:57

45k is apparently being used as the internal benchmark in gvmnt to keep to their "no tax increases for working persons" pledge. The directive in the treasury is to find ways to extract more tax from anyone earning above

Sunak was not perfect. But he was a damn good honest man and knew what would happen to the economy.

Do you accept that Reeves’s lot are prone to ‘floating’ policy to ascertain reaction?
