I just returned home from a shopping trip in a large shopping mall (can’t say where as would be outing) - 😂 not really, it was Bluewater.

I just want to know why everyone is so hostile. I know this has been discussed before but is it really the post Covid bad attitude / no social skills or awareness.

I was making my way out of a changing room with a pram this morning and a mother and adult daughter blocked both aisles to leave the changing room and then glared at me. I waited for them to move as they seemed as though they were quite invested in being aggressively in the way/ I was a massive inconvenience for wanting to exit the changing room. Normally I would say ‘excuse me’ or ‘sorry’ (I know people hate this as why am I apologising for being alive) but today I thought - I’m not even going to speak. You know you’re in the way. You’re both glaring at me and instead of getting changed in the cubicle you’re in the gangway with open mouthed gormless stares.

In my experience people behaving like that is more and more common now.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

The man on the till in Boots served me without even speaking to me the other day. I said “thanks so much” as I left and he didn’t even look up. I feel like a Dick for being so nice all the time when everyone else is like this 🙈😂

I was served by an assistant in M&S who didn’t say please or thank you. She had a huge scowl on her face too. I know everyone had bad days but surely a thank you is expected when you buy something.

Limmers14 · 30/10/2025 14:18

Oh it is KILLING me in London when people just get on the tube or train without waiting for others to get off. I’ve started saying it to people. Honestly it’s awful and so rude

TeenLifeMum · 30/10/2025 14:21

I see this more and more in the south east. I live in the south west and it’s much more friendly in general. It has deteriorated since Covid though. It’s like people used up niceness in the first 6 months of the pandemic.

ilovesooty · 30/10/2025 14:25

Depends where you are I suppose. I live a couple of miles from a city but there's a little village near me. I've visited the bakery, the sweetshop, the butchers and the greengrocer where everyone has been friendly and pleasant and chatted with fellow customers and a couple of friendly dog walkers.

OneMoreLifeCrisis · 30/10/2025 14:30

It’s everywhere! I had a toothless man get out of his car screaming and swearing at me because I was blocking the petrol station exit for all of one minute. The road was blocked due to roadworks, and an old man kept stalling his car, blocking the way. I was running late for an appointment too, but I didn’t think screaming and beeping my horn would help the situation. Apparently it’s women who are the overly emotional ones 🙄

Not everyone is rude, but more people are rude.

Please people, ask yourselves what do you want to positively achieve from being rude and nasty towards retail/hospitality/customer facing staff and members of the public? You will struggle to answer this as the answer to this question is NOTHING!

I was in a Poundland that is closing down in about 2 weeks time. I heard a man shout to the staff that knocking just 5% off food and cleaning stuff is unacceptable. The poor staff don't control what discounts are applied and besides, they are losing their jobs. I know with some Poundland shops, they took on Wilko staff. So some of these staff have been made redundant twice in just over 2 years.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/10/2025 14:37

It's shocking
At my local shopping centre yesterday people were standing directly in front of the lift doors as they opened and making no effort to step aside.
Earlier I was in John Lewis wanting to buy a Coach or Mulberry Tote and the member of staff who came over to stop an alarm that someone else had set off from beeping, had zero interest in serving. Needless to say I didn't buy one. I bought an Autograph one instead and now wish I hadn't cut off my nose to spote my face because it's crap.

TwinklyFawn · 30/10/2025 14:37

I have noticed that people are incapable of waiting to get on a train until everyone has got off. Then there are the people who block the carriage so that nobody else can get to their seats. I have noticed that some people think that it is okay to q jump. The last time i had a sainsburys shop delivered the driver didn't even bother to say hello.

DoraSpenlow · 30/10/2025 14:38

I know what you mean! I do the poppy collection down our street. Yesterday I knocked at a door and a little girl of about 3 or 4 answered the door. I was just asking if mummy or daddy was in when a young woman, presumably mum, came storming down the hallway, roughly pulled the child in and slammed the door in my face. It was obvious why I was there I had a tray of poppies. No problem if she didn't want to give. Plenty of people say they don't support the charity or have already contributed. I just smile and say thank you and goodbye. So unnecessary and rude. I really wanted to shout through the letterbox that a polite no thank you would have sufficed - I didn't though.

landlordhell · 30/10/2025 14:39

At my dentist recently I walked in and receptionist was typing at her computer. Didn’t look up. I waited…… and waited……. . Eventually she just looked and said ‘“Yes?” When I said my name and appointment she just said” Wait upstairs.” How do these people get the job in the first place?

Auburngal · 30/10/2025 14:39

The rudeness and from my experience, impatience, has certainly increased since Covid. For about 3 months in 2020, people queued outside for 20+ minutes to enter the supermarkets and essential shops. Now they tut, roll their eyes when they have to queue for 20 seconds.

Everyone needs to work in retail for a month, ideally in December. If this does not change their attitudes, then NOTHING will. As these people are just nasty.

Why on earth would you waste money like that on something you didn't want?

Everleigh13 · 30/10/2025 14:42

I think most people are ok and a decent number are friendly / pleasant.

A few people are astonishingly rude and have no consideration for anybody else whatsoever.

The other day I was picking DD up from nursery and another mother was walking behind me. I ended up holding the outside gate and two doors open for her. Each one she walked through without a thank you or any acknowledgment at all. The last door I held open she cut through to get in front of me in the queue. Very strange behaviour. I did think maybe she’s having a bad day or is going through tough times. Who knows what is going on with people?

I think it’s partly that the world is now so instant. Phones etc. TV shows on demand, selective listening and viewing, online shopping etc all mean we don’t have to wait. This accounts for impatience but rudeness is never excusable. I used to work for a large bank in customer service and the service we have was so good compared to now. We weren’t allowed to let the phone ring more than 3 rings! These days you’re lucky to speak to someone and if you do they won’t be in the country you’re phoning from so delayed phone lines and misunderstandings are rife.

How does to buying a different brand bag in there affect the staff at all? 🙄

I apologise if that's considered rude. I'm somewhat puzzled by someone having a particular brand in mind and settling for something that might well be inferior because they didn't like the service at the time. And where is the irony please?
