Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Raye Escapism
and I do also love where the hell is my husband
Sia- Snowman
Eminem - The real slim shady. When I first heard that on the radio I couldn’t believe it as a teen.
Kelly Clarkson - Because of you

WhatIsTheCharge · 28/10/2025 20:58

I agree with so many of these 😍

I clearly remember hearing Radiohead’s Creep on the radio for the first time and thinking how incredible Thom York’s vocal range was.

Also Mark Knopfler’s guitar solo in Dire Straits “Sultans of Swing” - I could listen to that song on repeat and never get bored of it

Regina Spektor - "The Call" My daughter's university choir sang it at the end of their course and it made me cry.

Dan Fogelberg - "The Leader of the Band" It reminds me so much of my dad. The line "My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man" brings me to tears every time I hear the song.

Emmy Lou Harries - "Your long journey" The first time I heard it I thought about how I would feel without my DM - at the time she was in a nursing home with advanced dementia - and I realised that her long journey had actually started.

And, on a more cheerful note The Kursaal Flyers - Little does she know. Every line has something in it that makes me smile "All in a quandary she dropped her clean lauandry". Wonderful!

Feels Like Home by Randy Newman sung by Linda Ronstadt. I first heard it in a film, and it made me cry.

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah

Disturbed's version of The Sound of Silence

Came here to say Jeff Buckley, Hallelujah- was after a boozy night out

Actually Faithless, Insomnia, too- not hugely into that type of dance but this got me (or was it the disco biscuits!)

Firestarter- Prodigy- no booze or drugs- just in my living room during the day and, Wow!

Another- I was decorating and had Zane Lowe's show on the radio- he played "The Wickedest Sound" Rebel MC- my brushwork sped up

Needlenardlenoo · 28/10/2025 21:01

I heard The Last Will and Testament of Jake Thackray once on Radio 2 and was so struck by it. I'd never heard anything like it.

Quite a few. All of these sounded like nothing I had heard before.

Blue Monday by New Order
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns'n'Roses
This Corrosion - Sisters of Mercy
Killing in the Name - RATM
Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Yes! This Corrosion and Killing In the Name were instantly arresting for me too.

Things Behind the Sun - Nick Drake

I heard it on a Desert Island Discs podcast. I immediately had to pull over in my car to listen to it. Then I immediately played it again and again. Instant goosebumps for me then and still when I hear it now

Racing in the Street - I was 13 and it started a Bruce obsession that has lasted over 40 years and 30 + concerts. I’m on my way Dean Parrish, all nighters at Wigan Casino in its last couple of years. It’s all about you McFly when my daughter was born
