Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Cold ... Annie Lennox

It became the anthem of my divorce.

nunsflipflop · 28/10/2025 20:48

My DH can’t listen to Kate Bush, This woman’s work, after having our youngest I haemorrhaged and was fighting for my life, while he was left to sit in the nursery with our newborn. He said he went through every emotion that day.

A lot of these I remember hearing, so clearly.

but one I hunted down after hearing on One Day tv series
the Book of Love, the Magnetic Fields.

it just surprised and haunted me. I love it.

Ohmygodthepain · 28/10/2025 20:50

Susan Boyle on whatever talent show she started on. When she first got started - wow.

We were in a caravan on the east coast and I got prickles all up my neck, I've only had that a handful of times in my life.

In January 1978 (yes, I’m old) I heard Rose Royce’s Wishing on a Star on Radio 1. It literally stopped me in my tracks, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it sounded. A week later I met a guy who was also obsessed with the same song and I suppose you could say we fell in love to it although the relationship didn’t last. I still think about that song at least every week and have it in several of my playlists.
more recently Jalen Ngonda All About Me and Raye Where is my Husband have both made me reach for Shazam to immediately find out what they are.
Wishing on a Star is still my favourite song ever

Cherrysoup · 28/10/2025 20:51

As others, Teen Spirit. I was a bit drunk, a bunch of us staying over at a mate’s house in France when I lived there and this came on the radio. We were all in one room and just shut up spontaneously to listen. Think we were absolutely gobsmacked.

Lucky, by Radiohead.
The first time I heard it, it just gave me goose bumps all over my body.

Adele 'Someone like you'. I had no idea who she was, they interviewed her on Radio 6 and I remember I picked up on her accent, then they played the song and it literally gave me goosebumps... Totally unexpected.

Same song. Her live version at the Brit Awards. Comes across like she doesn't know what an incredible voice she has and she looks vulnerable somehow on stage. Spellbinding

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 28/10/2025 20:52

Three Babies - Sinead O’Connor
Sound of Silence - Disturbed

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 28/10/2025 20:52

Evanescence - Bring me to Life
JJ - Wasted Love
Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground

pteromum · 28/10/2025 20:54

Agree Adele someone like you at the Brit awards. But I was here then and the abuse that song got now enters my head.

last week I was driving and heard a song, Ann Marie, depression.

it was powerful.

I suppose music is like that, it takes you to a place or reminds you of a moment.

petitpasta · 28/10/2025 20:55

Sanctus from Fauré's Requiem. I can't do anything else but listen to it. Utterly beautiful.

Hate to break it to you , I also thought it was Knights for years, but it’s Nights .

Hahaha I spent my childhood imagining knights and was confused when I learnt about the ku klux klan as that’s kind of what I was imagining. Wasn’t until I was a very grown grown up and searched for the sheet music that I realised it was nights 😆

The first time I ever saw your face.
George Micheal. Although Roberta Flacks version is also great.

I'll never forget the scene in Play Misty for Me starring Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter with the soundtrack of Roberta Flack. Iconic!
