Was listening to some music today and after my playlist was finished Spotify went off on its own little algorithm-y journey, and I suddenly found myself listening to a song so beautiful I had it on repeat for about an hour. That sort of thing happens to me very rarely, so I thought I’d see if anyone else could recommend songs that have struck them in a similar way.

Slipping through my fingers

I was doing my homework and Kate Bush singing 'Wuthering Heights' came on the radio, I think it may have been the first time it was ever played on Radio 1. I was stunned and went into school saying she was fantastic and was going to be a big star and everyone had to hear it.

She chose not to be as 'big' as she could have been (and I respect her for her decisions) but I'm a lifelong fan.

I work in music and am a huge Kate Bush fan but strangely that’s one of her songs im
not that keen on - give me ‘man with the child in his eyes’ or ‘running up that hill ‘ or hounds of love etc

What a very odd song!
Not helped that all the YT versions I can find are sung by a man, when it is so clearly a woman's song.

Absolutely lovely btw. I shall have to listen to more of Bastille. Thank you for introducing me to them 💐

My "stopped in my tracks moment" track is Pie Jesu sung by All Angels

The man singing is Dan Smith of Bastille, he wrote the song 🙂 I just found the melody and vocals so haunting (background vocals too) and lyrically so heartbreaking and poignant - “who’d have known that I’d be carrying our babies and our sins” - I mean what a line! It really speaks to Dan’s talent that he is able to write from a woman’s perspective in that way.

Bastille are great- happy to be of service! Enjoy!

"one more light"

So for context I was a huge Linkin Park fan during my teens, I related heavily the topics they sang about and for the first time in life felt others understood what I was going though

I actually got to see them live at Download fest 2014 where they played Hybrid Theory (my favourite album!) in full. Which is a memory I'll always treasure.

It unfortunately wasn't long after that the singer Chester committed suicide and One More Light was the last song he did that they released just after.

It haunted me. It hurt to know the man whos music I think genuinely think helped an entire generation deal with their teenage years and their mental health ultimately died of suicide..I felt so sad that in a way his music saved me, but we couldn't save him if that makes any sense?

Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez
It’s all about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Such a haunting melody and beautiful lyrics. I was definitely stopped in my tracks the first time I heard it, which was decades after it was released.

Disturbia81 · 01/11/2025 01:21

I don’t like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats.
It was the sad story behind it that made me prick up my ears, plus I was a fan.

Leighonseawoman · 01/11/2025 06:14

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

DeathNote11 · 01/11/2025 07:20

Frou Frou, A New Kindle of Love, stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it & still a big favourite.

PapardelleFitzgerald · 01/11/2025 13:26

So many of these are songs of loss and regret- do they stop us in our tracks because they are the shortcut to feelings we spend so much effort burying? There are songs about exultant joy but I find it easier to allow those to accompany whatever I'm doing in that moment rather than stop for a wallow.

highlandponymummy · 01/11/2025 13:29
