Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

It’s incredible to see that people actually believe that the majority of the men coming over on boats are anything other than economic migrants.

The majority are granted asylum. So refugees, not economic migrants. And that's a fact, not an opinion.

Spot on. None of them would live in these areas.

I do

CorneliaCupp · 29/10/2025 07:47

I do

Are we talking a nice area or really run down? I am in a very run area with lots of cultures. I have read of wealthy people saying how much they like the area but don't live there. I wonder why .🤷

Well, not the worst, but definitely economically underesourced. V multicultural.

Asylum seekers, housed in hotels in Manchester, are reaching out in their own words to address the concerns of the local community.

Why do Labour not get it?
PandoraSocks · 29/10/2025 08:38

Thanks, but that article is about the terrible murder of Rhiannon Whyte. A totally different case to the one about the attack on the chef. chef. My question about "fleeing Gaddafi" has already been answered.

That article is interesting though, in that it cherry picks what Rhiannon's family said. It doesn't mention that they said

"Getting justice for Rhiannon is not the ending of her story, we will continue to advocate to evoke change in her name. Many have tried to imply this is about immigration, but these are the choices of one man, not an ethnic group."

I wonder why that was omitted?

They're hardly going to be writing that they are living it up on Tripadvisor are they. Just like all the Brits who tell life on benefits playing on the xbox all day is oh so difficult.

So you think the letter is a lie?

marshmallowmix · 29/10/2025 08:44

That is just hilarious! @DuncinToffee

Yeah right the concerned asylum seekers wrote that did they ….me thinks not!!

Put out by the Labour council …it’s so obvious! It has though given me a much needed laugh 😆.

I could knock something up like that in Word and say it’s asylum seekers writing it …utter tosh! Just more spin as people are sick to the back teeth of it.

One of those Pro Asylum groups/Labour council wrote that piece they are trying to defend the indefensible 😣.

Why would you assume that, and not that it is genuine?

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 08:55

The language slips from Gov level lines to basic phrasing. It’s an odd mix of emotion and interjection from someone political.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 29/10/2025 08:56

I don’t see why it isn’t genuine

it must be incredibly boring having nothing to do and no money and no space to youself for 2/3 years

and i am happy to agree that some of the hotels are what i would consider nice (maybe not stripped of all its amenities and sharing rooms with strangers) but a lot are absolute shitholes

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 08:57

It also doesn’t address the issue of 300 to 900 men and the risks associated with that. Who does feel ok with those facilities nearby?

Some must otherwise this thread would be in agreement.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 29/10/2025 08:58

And i would imagine they had a translator to help if they struggle with english, if someone told me what to say and i wrote it down for them it doesn’t mean its not their thoughts

the word ‘shit hole’ for example might not be appreciated in a letter 😀

EasternStandard · 29/10/2025 09:00

I don’t see that it changes much either way. There is still risk, not everyone is writing letters.

38thparallel · 29/10/2025 09:00

Lord Hermer probably wrote it.

marshmallowmix · 29/10/2025 09:06

@DuncinToffee

Well, well, well …a quick google and it is even more dubious as that has come from the GMIAU who are - surprise, surprise Immigration lawyers fighting the asylum seekers cases.

You simply could not make it up …of course they are going to put this nonsense out as it’s their bread and butter fighting immigration cases and are pro asylum seekers! That is their job so it’s a load of cobblers to put it politely, it’s those human rights lawyers that are parasites fighting deportations paid for by our legal aid system.

Even more hilarious 🤣 if it wasn’t so pathetic and obvious before I even googled who GMIAU are. They are there to aid immigration the clue is in their name…immigration aid unit.

No one is falling for it and most have had it and some!

Immigration lawyers are parasites?

marshmallowmix · 29/10/2025 09:45

@CorneliaCupp It is a very well known fact I am quite surprised you are not aware?

A number of unscrupulous immigration lawyers are like parasites as they feed off the asylum system taking advantage of both the asylum seeker and the UK tax payer who pay their fees via legal aid.

Interesting though that the only thing you can point out from my post is calling out the lawyers not that the said "article" was written by those whose job it is is to at "aid immigration." But hey gloss over that part....🙄

I think the letter is genuine, I don't think that immigration lawyers are parasites.
Nothing in your post is fact, it's all opinion, which I disagree with.

It is laughable, imagine if I owned a business and wrote myself a rave review on Google or TripAdvisor it is hardly reliable/unbiased.

They are marking their own homework putting that sob story out...it means nada!

It did start my day off with a laugh though reading it, so thanks to the poster for sharing 😂

Me too, I’m not sure GMIAU or whoever they are realised they had been unintentionally hilarious.
