Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

@Wildgoat

i just don’t get how it keeps happening, tories stay in power so long everyone gets fed up, labour get in, they fuck the countries economy, do one term, then the tories come back in, start trying to fix the shit show, Labour don’t get back in for another decade, and history repeats itself. Every single time.

You seem to be living in a parallel universe. The last time Labour were in power, they were in for 3 terms and tbe economy was pretty good for the first two and a half terms (until the 2008 financial crisis). The last time Labour had one term like you’re suggesting was back in the 1970s.

I’m no Labour supporter, but your understanding of the UK’s political history is completely at odds with reality!

Another way to look at this...

The tories slowly destroy the economy over 10 years, while the media do everything they can to distract us from this fact. People get fed up of the state of the country so vote Labour in.

Labour are then handed a sh!t show of a budget to sort out. Everything is failing because the tories have failed to invest in the country for such a long time. Labour then fail to solve 10 years of underfunding in 6 months, while the media simultaneously slate everything they do, and push stories about how terrible a job Labour are doing... and suddenly everybody thinks that it is labours fault that the country is on its ar$e.

Why dont people see this? Why does nobody talk about the atrocious job the tories have done over the years? The lack of funding to our services, the hospitals that never got built, the month of liz truss, the billions of pounds wasted on pointless masks?

I'm not saying Labour are doing a fantastic job, but they've got a very difficult job, which will take years and years to sort out. It was not labours fault that there was a global recession in 2008. It is the tories fault that our economy is where it is today...

Sorry @pigeonpoodle I couldn't find @wildgoat Original post to quote!

@MaturingCheeseball you miss the point. Did you consider that you were being kept in "5 star luxury" when you were sharing 4 to a room with total strangers with no privacy, no personal space or secure place for whatever belongings you had, no access to cooking facilities and barely adequate washing facilities. It's illegal for them to work to earn their living, so either they get kept alive at the taxpayers expense (and the hotel accommodation is basic, not luxurious) until their status can be determined, or they are expected to starve and die. The people who prefer the latter are disgusting. I wasn't asking that they get more or better treatment, just that the evil protesters stop complaining that we as a civilisation are treating fellow humans with humanity rather than killing them.

I’ve said before on here- my company works in hotels used by migrants. What you have said here is not true in my experience. Have you been in any of these hotels or are you just imagining this to be the case?
The hotels are given money to look after the men so they are actually given (for eg) new mattresses. They aren’t in camp beds 4 to a room. The rooms stay in their own figurations in the ‘upmarket’ hotel chain we work in. They have meals cooked for them that are spicy/currys.
The rooms are hygienic- they have to be. Remember the Bibby Stockholm thing? The bathroom en suites exist- the same as they did before! This is the same up and down the country.

It’s not illegal to seek asylum.

I didn’t say it was illegal to claim asylum though, did I?
it is illegal to enter this country without permission /visa (refer to illegal migration act 2023).

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/10/2025 20:53

Why do so, so many people still not understand that simple fact?

Exactly ! So many apologists on here …it’s sickening.

Things are now at breaking point I’d say.

They are videos taken and circulated of an asylum hotel in Derby and all asylum seekers pictured at meal times huge platefuls, plates piled up salads, fresh fruits …the works. These so called asylum seekers are laughing at us….soft touch U.K.

Meanwhile people here working and battling with a COL crisis and can’t feed themselves and their children, food banks can’t keep up …people can’t manage …it’s real!

Sickening that the government prioritises unknowns.

So many people are so disappointed and disillusioned…every day more bad news …the stays quo is not working.

HurrahWuff · 02/11/2025 22:29

My friend lives within half a mile of two hotels, one with just males and one with families.
Groups of men hang around at the local park, which is intimidating if you’re a lone female with small children in tow.
And the NCA arrested a paedophile from the hotel with families on the 17th October and apparently nobody was told (police, mp, local councillors etc) I certainly didn’t see anything in the MSM.

scorpiogirly · 02/11/2025 22:51

They get jt alright. It's all planned.

marshmallowmix · 03/11/2025 11:47

There was a father of 4 girls talking on the radio this morning and he was very, very scared and worried at the prospect of 600 unchecked men moving into their very small village of Crowborough.

Callers were asked okay where then ....and the overwhelming answer is somewhere remote away from communities, in tents if need be.

It is sickening. I’ve said on here before (I got reported for it and it was removed)
that the poor housekeeping manager had just had enough in one of the hotels. Women weren’t allowed up on the top floor because it was too dangerous. He couldn’t keep up with repainting the walls that were constantly being graffitied with Arabic words/sentences. One man had threw the remote at the tv and smashed it- twice- and they had replaced it with a new tv both times. Not a crappy thing- a brand new out the box hotel tv both times.

I’ve got kids in their 20s and I despair at the country they are growing up in.

notnorman · 03/11/2025 20:44

(Ps- to state that they’re in unhygienic conditions is 100% not true- as our job role is to maintain a particular type of hygiene in every room)

Those people should be asked to leave the hotel and the UK as far as I am concerned

Chinsupmeloves · 03/11/2025 21:00

I'm sure barracks will cost a lot less than hotels?

Chinsupmeloves · 03/11/2025 21:01

FenceBooksCycle · 31/10/2025 10:08

You do realise that they won't have access to the pool and spa and that the double room you were going to share with your DH will be a lot less comfy when it contains 4 unrelated people on put-u-up beds, dormitory-style. They are not getting the lovely high quality bedding either. The only bit of "luxury" that will remain from.the experience you would have had is that the wallpaper won't be changed.

It al depends which hotels and if they cater for 3 meals a day.

I wouldn’t bet on it….depends on who will be running the barracks

Ah yes, I see! But because they're more dormitory based and have communal kitchens and bathrooms i would assume no wriggle room for expenses claims?

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 03/11/2025 21:36

There aren’t kitchens in hotel rooms so they might do the same thing with the barracks 🧐

what do you mean by expense claims?

marshmallowmix · 07/11/2025 08:42

Over 600 arrived on small boats yesterday it’s madness.

That is nearly 38k this year so far …more worrying is if they are allowed to stay which most are then they can bring their large extended families over ….all from countries that don’t align with western values. It gets more troubling by the day.

MaturingCheeseball · 07/11/2025 08:45

@marshmallowmix it’s terrible. One asylum success equals 20 at least family members and then all their family members.

marshmallowmix · 07/11/2025 09:03

We are already bankrupt it’s unbelievable!

Is that true?! 600 asylum seekers arrived just yesterday alone?

Yes the conditions in the channel improved so the backlog from the past 10 days or so were raring to get here of course.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/11/2025 10:11

I can’t get my head around the numbers. This is absolutely crazy.

marshmallowmix · 07/11/2025 10:22

It is 610 actually - surely this is a national emergency....

They are not fleeing war, they came form France where a tent in a field is what they get...here they are shipped to hotels and given meals and the rest...when is enough enough!

We are being played for fools....sick to the back teeth of this.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 07/11/2025 10:23

Your top sentence is so weird as I thought exactly the same. This feels like the kind of numbers that would trigger a national emergency. If these numbers keep coming what on earth are we going to do?!
