Why do Labour not get it?

It's being reported today that Labour want to stop using hotels and move migrants into barracks. Fine. But when quizzed on it Luke Pollard has suggested this will be more expensive, but the public want the hotels to close at all costs so it will be worth it.

This to me just seems like another step forward for Reform. The public who care about this, care about how much the government is spending on migrant housing. A new policy that costs more isn't going to go anyway towards solving this problem.

I don't know what the solution is, but spending more money getting mothballed barracks up to spec seems ludicrous.

"Asked about whether it would cost more to house migrants at military bases than in hotels, Mr Pollard insisted that 'the public want to see those hotels close'.

But he added: 'We're looking at what's possible and, in some cases, those bases may be a different cost to hotels, but I think we need to reflect the public mood on this asylum hotels need to close.'"

On the news that overnight and this morning several hundred more have arrived the total is now more than 1,000 small boat migrants in the space of 24 hours.

Massive dingy's rammed full of young men.

The problem is that "the public" is thick as pigshit. The "hotels" the refugees have been staying at are not luxurious, they are in very basic accommodation. A room that was a double back when the hotel was being run as a hotel has 3 or 4 unrelated eefugees in it living a horrible experience. If other soutions would be more expensive then they should stick with using hotels and combat the evil misinformation that is being put about by racists and fascists who want to blame genuine refugees for all the world's ills.

TBF everyone and their dog knows the narrative around migration is driven by misinformation and outright lies. But those on the right don’t care, they just want someone to look down on and hate and right now that's asylum seekers. I'm not really sure there much you can do to combat that.

I can see you feel strongly which is up to you, but if you’re ok with the crossings as they are would you also welcome the barracks nearby to you?

marshmallowmix · 07/11/2025 13:32

There will be a (probably large) proportion of these 1,000 plus in the last 24 hours with criminal backgrounds...our streets become more and more unsafe.

They have come via illegal means so not the cream of the crop...we don't need these unvetted people.

Truly shocking, no one wants them in their communities we are plagued with issues and it is never, ever ending...people are afraid to go out alone and harassed by them in groups hanging about.

Totally sick of so called do-gooders bleating on, well take them to live near you....see how that works out for you!

marshmallowmix · 07/11/2025 10:22

It is 610 actually - surely this is a national emergency....

They are not fleeing war, they came form France where a tent in a field is what they get...here they are shipped to hotels and given meals and the rest...when is enough enough!

We are being played for fools....sick to the back teeth of this.

Yes we are and so am I

i really think they are a threat to the UK

It’s the same old bollocks trotted out every time though, isn’t it? British men also do these things so we should have no problem accepting hundreds more of these types of men on a daily basis.
The UK definitely doesn’t have a culture of finding the sexual harassment and assault of women acceptable, by the way. Unlike the countries many of these men are coming from.

I agree.

There aren't British men standing in court after sexually harassing a woman or child using the defence that they didn't realise it was against the law/ didn't think we would mind/ didn't realise how strict we are....

We are allowing people into this country and to roam free who judges think it is reasonable that they don't even understand that they can't go round grabbing and fondling women. If they don't understand this/don't care then they shouldn't be allowed the freedom to walk around.

I'm not on the wind up, I am totally genuine.
If you have seen my previous point then you will know that I have advocated for the safety of women at all points.
The vast majority of asylum seekers are no threat to you or anyone. Some are, but not all.
That is why I object to your framing of all asylum seekers as dangerous, it's simply not true.
I can understand you being angry and afraid, I can't understand your prejudice against all asylum seekers.

Can you use special powers to tell which asylum seekers are a threat and which are not? No? Then the only way we know is when someone is sexually harassed, raped or murdered - and then we say "oops he was the baddy".

Ridiculous.

So how do you intend to keep women and children, and men come to that safe when some asylum seekers do pose a threat and we have no way of knowing which?

LabourOfLoathing · 07/11/2025 21:00

It’s a good idea, even if it’s more expensive. What would you prefer as your accommodation? A four star hotel? Or an army barracks with basic food and rations?

Someone is earning a fortune from this.

Which charities are encouraging them?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/08/02/red-cross-flies-migrants-families-britain/

I would think that their donations would fall after the publicity. I was under the impression that they were a medical/aid charity like Médecins sans frontier.

What's the problem? They help human beings in need. Whatever you think about refugees and restricting access to our shores, surely no one can be against assistance to human beings who have a genuine need of help? That's the job of such charities. And donations are voluntary, not like taxes. I'd have thought that would be encouraged.
There are families and children who really need support. It's not all rapists and traffickers.

The problem is most people want the number of people moving to Britain reduced.

So if you give money to a charity thinking that will help with medics and food aid in war zones only to find that your money is being used to encourage people to move to Britain that will be the last you donate. If this is how your money will be used the charity should be upfront about it.

Yep this! Most people want numbers reduced and the "Boriswave" returned as the knock on effects of benefits/housing costs for this group are overwhelming and unsustainable....
