Should I be worried about what Uber Delivery Man said to me tonight

Hello everyone
I have a Mercedes Car on my driveway but with a Wheel Clamp on it, DD ordered a Delivery with Uber, I answered the door and the Uber Man said to me can I ask you something I said yes then he said is the Wheel Clamp on your Mercedes Car safe I said why are you asking and he said to me just want to know if the Wheel Clamps are safe for security reasons as I want one for my Car.
Just felt very strange for a Uber Delivery Man to ask me if that and I’m now wondering if he wanted to know if he was up to something.

Well this is clearly a lesson to us all. This would never have happened, OP, if you had followed the timeless MN advice to NEVER open your front door.

DBSFstupid · 28/10/2025 08:19

FFS

People can't breathe anymore without there being an issue.
Neurotic and way over the top.

Honestly

mazed · 28/10/2025 08:26

I've never seen a wheel clamp on anything except to immobilise by an authority etc. Didn't know it was a thing, and I think I'm savvy. But I don't drive a mercedes.

WellYouWereMythTaken · 28/10/2025 08:27

I love that you mention your car is a Mercedes more than once. Typical Mercedes driver behaviour 🙃

You're being ridiculous btw.

CheeseWisely · 28/10/2025 08:27

Good god how do you live with this high level of paranoia?

Is it just me, or do there seem to be a lot of threads on here lately taking exception to perfectly normal stuff delivery people have said and done?

For example there was a woman who wanted to report an IKEA delivery guy for asking for a drink.

Is it because delivery people don't earn very much, so are seen as some kind of sub-class of human?

I won't lie, it makes me feel quite defensive/angry. My ex was a delivery driver. There are lots of things I would take objection to about him, but the way he did his job wasn't one of them. It's an often unpleasant, tiring and badly paid role, but pretty essential to our lives in this day and age. I for one am incredibly grateful that there are men and women willing to do this work, despite the poor pay and poor working conditions.

My elderly mother is my dad's full time carer and can rarely leave the house. She absolutely relies on delivery drivers, and apart from me and her neighbour they are often the only people she sees from one week to the next. She is often telling me how a delivery driver has brightened her day with a bit of friendly chat at the door....

Sorry, rant over. Apologies if I am heinfnunfair, but threads like this really bug me.

I agree. I love delivery drivers. My best one ever was this hugely tall man walking in and I got ds to help bring stuff in. He says to ds, "ooh, good to see a strapping young man helping mum" snd then they look properly at each other and turns out they know each other - ds plays pick up basketball on a local court and this guy and his younger (than ds) son are often there and apparently ds and his friends let the younger boy play with them. So they had a quick basketball chat. I loved that it feels very community like often in these situations even though its seldom the same delivery driver.

Lol true. I think my Vauxhall is safe from that though. Most people with fancy cars on drives here ( that are not gated) have a couple of poles that lay downtown get in then locked up again preventing car from being taken out

It’s one good reason to keep hold of my non-valuable car 🤣 I did want an RS3 at one point, but they’re high on the target list!

Erm yes… and he’s asking you if it’s a good make? Seriously are you usually this paranoid about the most innocuous things?

NormaNormalPants · 28/10/2025 05:52

At least daddy’s beer was safe 😁

I was worried about Daddy’s beer, but Uber Driver was driving, so he left it alone 😆

Yes, but those were put on by people who don't care if the care is damaged. He wants once for his own car which is a whole different ball game. Strikes me as a perfectly reasonable question.

DiscoBob · 28/10/2025 08:53

What could possibly be shifty about a polite question about a car accessory?

He explained clearly he was looking at getting one so asked about it.

When he said the word 'safe' he probably just meant does it actually stop someone pinching the car and is it legal.

I don't know about your area but in mine most of the food delivery guys don't have English as a first language. Hence the awkward phrasing.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 28/10/2025 09:20

He saw an opportunity to ask a real person, face to face, what they thought about a product he was interested in. That's all.

I was in a car park at a nature reserve last month, and a chap approached me to ask about my roof bag - we were on our way home from a self-catering holiday and we have too much stuff to be able to fit it all in the boot 😬 He and his famiy have started going camping, and the amount of gear they have keeps increasing, and he had been wondering if a roof bag was the answer. He's seen them on other cars out and about, but not had a chance to ask anyone about their experience with them.

I know this because instead of freaking out and assuming he was trying to rob us, I chatted to him about the challenges of stowing all the stuff you need when you are holidaying somewhere with wildly unreliable weather.

Ah - but just you wait till the morning after you get home and find out that your roof bag's been stolen. You'll soon regret being taken in by the smooth-talking thief then!

Maybe he lives in a better area than you do.

Tbh I find Audis much nicer to drive

Whereas I can’t tell the difference between an Audi and a VW (so drive a high spec vw as it seems to offer more than an Audi for less money).

I went for Skoda over VW for similar reasons.

BringBackCatsEyes · 28/10/2025 14:00

This is likely Baader-Meinhof but I saw a Mercedes with a wheel clamp, just parked up on a road (probably outside the owner's house).
This was in a not particularly affluent town.

Skodas look great - they were on my list.

BauhausOfEliott · 28/10/2025 15:13

He asked a perfectly normal and reasonable question about something he was thinking of buying. You're being really weird and paranoid.

Last time I ordered a takeaway from our local Turkish place the driver asked me what scented candles I use, because he thought my hallway 'smelled like a nice hotel'. Am I meant to be worried about this? Because frankly I was delighted.

DP replaced his old VW with a Skoda Octavia last year and he loves it.

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 28/10/2025 15:16

Would be a bit stupid to ask someone about their wheel clamp if you wanted to steal it/their car. Or to ask your mark whether you should nick their car essentially 😂

Hes just asking a question

I've got the Octavia RS and it's honestly the best car I've ever had (and I've had all sorts). Reliable, quick, lovely interior; a real pleasure to drive.

Ive never seen them on a car that wasnt being clamped by an authority but with all the thefts these days they could be a good idea.

I think if you said, ive had no problem and they make you feel more secure. It would be a perfectly reasobable convo

Calliopespa · 28/10/2025 18:48

ninjahamster · 27/10/2025 22:16

Wouldn’t worry me.

If you think he’s eyeing up the car then he would be pretty stupid to alert you to it!

This.

If he's up to no good it won't be your car he targets after advertising his interest.

But I always get twitchy if asked if we are going away/ home alone etc, so I do understand.

LakotaWolf · 28/10/2025 20:20

Just checking in with OP to see if the Uber driver stole her Mercedes yet or not.
