Should I be worried about what Uber Delivery Man said to me tonight

Hello everyone
I have a Mercedes Car on my driveway but with a Wheel Clamp on it, DD ordered a Delivery with Uber, I answered the door and the Uber Man said to me can I ask you something I said yes then he said is the Wheel Clamp on your Mercedes Car safe I said why are you asking and he said to me just want to know if the Wheel Clamps are safe for security reasons as I want one for my Car.
Just felt very strange for a Uber Delivery Man to ask me if that and I’m now wondering if he wanted to know if he was up to something.

OP posts:

Why so people with Mercedes never just say we have a nice car on the drive? Always “we have a Mercedes” - is Mercedes that much of a status symbol. They used to be seen as posh when I was younger but I didn’t realise that was still a thing.

Mewling · 28/10/2025 00:15

I’d worry less about him stealing your car and more about what he did to the food. You can’t be too careful these days. Did he seem working class, or was he a bit brown? 🙄

Namechangedforthis25 · 28/10/2025 00:17

I think the uber driver was too polite and well-mannered and asked the wrong question

If I saw your drive I’d think YOU had nicked the car and the police had put a clamp on it.

FastFood · 27/10/2025 22:21

Because its a MERCEDES

OP is giving me Sheila Bloom vibes from Friday Night Dinner. ‘Oh we were just driving along in our Mercedes… but then someone bumped into our Mercedes… and then a bird flew into our Mercedes… oh didn’t I mention we’ve got a Mercedeeeez?’

Probably the same kind of people on here that act like tradespeople are scum and will somehow leave there poor people germs if they use the bathroom 🤷

Yes, exactly these kinds of people.

It's depressing.

I mercifully don't know anyone with this attitude in real life - do they all hang out on here?

(I don't mean to be anti-Mumsnet - lots of the boards are fab and fully of lovely, helpful people. But the class prejudice you sometimes see does get me down and make me feel quite unwelcome to be honest!)

Mumsnet is a very classist site.

Try announcing you completed your family by late 20s!

Snobby Mumsnetter: "oh, I'm sorry you missed out on a career dear! "

Me: "oh, I've got a decent enough career thanks "

Snobby Mumsnetter: "well you clearly missed out on travelling. We've travelled the world before having kids at 40"

Me: "actually we did a fair bit of travelling pre kids"

Snobby Mumsnetter: "you're clearly lying. Nobody can possibly do all that and hand kids pre 35yrs old. You're obviously unhappy with your choices and are trying to protest too much "

Really ? Me ? 🤨

Edited

Sorry you were spoken to like that, it's shocking, and yes I completely agree.

Sometimes an OP will inadvertantly reveal some little detail about her life that hints that she isn't very rich or is from a working class background, even when it isn't germane to rhe main reason for hee post, and you can almost hear rhe hackles of a lot of respondents rising....

Again, thank God it's not true of most people here (and more prevalent on certain boards than others I think - I always tell myself I will just avoid certain topics from now on, but then I see a title on Active and can't help diving in......)

Chickensky · 28/10/2025 00:48

"Oh Lord, can't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drove Porches
I must make amends"

Ear worm still here. 🎵

In all seriousness, no self respecting newish car can be stopped with a wheel clamp. I guess it's more of a deterrent or insurance thing.

Also an absolutely innocent conversation IMO.

"Oh Lord won't you buy me..."

Got that little ear worm going round in my head now 🤣

Gotta love Janis

I've never seen a wheel clamp on a car on a drive before.

Neither have I. I didn’t know they were available to purchase by the general public for security reasons. I live and learn!

FatalCattraction · 28/10/2025 02:16

If the visiting GP said it (unlikely as they hardly ever visit) would you have posted?

MolvolioPortesque · 28/10/2025 02:37

Last time a delivery driver made enquiries about my Mercedes Car’s security, I woke up on the middle of the night to find he had come into my home, eaten all the food in the cupboards, and had drank all the water in my taps. I had to go out to the cafe for sausage, chips and ice cream. I bought a big tin of Uber Driver food in case he ever did it again, but he never did.

Here in the US we call them boots, but I've also never seen one that wasn't put on by parking enforcement.

Shattereddreamsparkway · 28/10/2025 02:50

he’d be a pretty useless criminal if he directly asked you about a car he was intending to steal in his own car that he uses for work that you could easily identify, he’d be making himself prime suspect. If he was going to do something he wouldn’t ask you a question first.

Oooobigstretch · 28/10/2025 02:59

God I hate it when the working class actually thinks they can TALK to you!

CallMeFlo · 28/10/2025 03:51

ML5 · 27/10/2025 22:49

He didn’t have a car he had motor bike

When did the law come in youre only allowed one veh

Namechange29383929383 · 28/10/2025 04:36

When enquiring on car finance a few months ago the bank were willing to let me have a car up to the value of 50k despite the fact I earn a bang average amount. I chose a car costing a fifth of that because I do not care to have high payments, but had I gone for it I too would’ve been a peasant with a naice car. The horror!

pinkbackground · 28/10/2025 05:06

You’re overthinking it.

Porpoiseful · 28/10/2025 05:12

Might be a good test for the clamp…

HesarealJacquelineHigh · 28/10/2025 05:25

This reminds me of the Friday night dinner episode where Sheila had to make sure that everyone knew she drives a Mercedes

Starconundrum · 28/10/2025 05:31

I thought you meant you'd be clamped by bailiffs so 🤷

In fact I'm still not entirely sure, but now I'm leaning towards a steering wheel lock.

rwalker · 28/10/2025 05:33

He was just asking for recommendations and if they were any good
wouldn’t even cross my mind he was up to no good

PollyBell · 28/10/2025 05:34

Why is the fact the car is a 'Mercedes car' relevant, you could have a 'car' with a wheel clamp and the whole OP could have been the same

PollyBell · 28/10/2025 05:36

Ruby1985 · 27/10/2025 22:21

Literally this! I mean come on…

I hope he didnt knock on the door and hollered down the street, MN doesnt like people knocking for some weird reason

Basilisthebestherb · 28/10/2025 05:38

ML5 · 27/10/2025 22:49

He didn’t have a car he had motor bike

And??? Probably has a car at home. Might even be a Mercedes!!!

Tubs22 · 28/10/2025 05:46

Are you genuinely this suspicious of everyone? I haven't seen a wheel clamp in years so is possibly a question I'd ask
