To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

This thread has helped me firm up views that I like LA's music & generally like her.
I can't myself sing on key so I have no ability to be bothered if LA can sing or not (although I thought Amy Winehouse sure couldn't sing & look how vernerated AW became).

AW also wrote songs about being 'bad' and cheating etc. Funny how people can ignore those things for some & for others say "It's no excuse!"

I didn't know LA was married to Harbour but now I read about his struggles, I can see why he brings so much humanity to his part in StrThings. Which is acting after all.

Will look out for that album in case I can like it.

I'd like to remind people that not all women who've had abortions are doing it because of an unwanted pregnancy. Some very much want their babies but because of a risk to their own life (eg. ectopic pregnancies) or because the baby won't survive being born or won't live for long afterwards they choose to terminate the pregnancy. So yes, joking about how many abortions you've had is pretty awful, and a woman listening to that who had to make a very hard choice may well have found it upsetting. I certainly find it grim.

I think she was laughing at herself, not the abortions. So the opprobrium expressed towards her on here is probably nothing compared to that she has for herself.

I just don’t see the cold flippant character that some on here see. I see someone more self deprecating and her album demonstrates that.

I’ve been reading this thread from the beginning and I honestly think it’s gone in an odd direction. So many posters are now just here to personally assassinate Lily’s character and her life choices. Not sure that was at all the purpose of the thread.

Exactly!!!

fortinbra · 26/10/2025 05:59

Can't believe people are still using phrases like 'airing dirty laundry in public' in 2025. A very repressed and unhealthy attitude.

Yes!

I often imagine that some
of those posters are in my age bracket and wonder what happened to them. Young people must think we all had such strange and backward ideas about everything but trust me we didn’t.

Yes! I really don’t get why they have done that. Some of us just wanted to discuss her brilliant album but for some people everything seems to break down into binaries with nothing in between. Good/bad love/hate. It is mind numbing and exhausting.

I don't think I've ever been 'stunned' by any album ever. People do use OTT language on here.

I’ve not heard it yet…. But hee songs always were a bit like that ‘fuck you, fuck you very mu-uuuu-ch’ was one from years ago wasn’t it?
I used to be a fan and deleted her off devices when I had my daughter many years ago. Then she’s had a few years of not doing much due to becoming a mother herself didn’t she?
I do love her voice though, The song she sang for the John Lewis Christmas advert was lovely

@T1Dmama

why on earth did you delete all her songs once you had your daughter if you liked them and you were a fan?? Don’t get it.

Why is everyone forgetting to mention that these abortions cost our nhs millions each year? I’ve had one with zero shame when I was very young. It wasn’t pleasant and because I have a social conscience and care about our dying public services I wouldn’t gratuitously have another or use it as contraception. I don’t think that makes me anti feminist 🙄

Why would we mention that? NHS abortions are cheaper than NHS births. Not to mention how much children cost the taxpayer.

Saves a fortune, abortion.

This isn’t about the phrase. Have you ever heard of having strong boundaries? Which are particularly important when you have children.

I have never listened to a pop album before that moved me to tears. This one did. And from some of the mainstream reviews I have read it has had the same effect on hardened critics.

I only listened because I read the reviews and wasn’t expecting much so in that respect I was indeed stunned.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 25/10/2025 22:30

It's utter nonsense say contraception and abortion are the same thing. I'm pro choice but Lily Allen was careless and stupid using abortion as contraception.

Edited

I agree - I was responding to the pp who seemed to be conflating the two.

StrongLikeMamma · 26/10/2025 09:33

OhMargaret · 25/10/2025 22:55

I’m Lily’s age and I do think she’s a really interesting barometer of our generation. All this stuff seemed so liberating and feminist when we were younger but the problem is, if you live by the sword you die by the sword. And even if it’s all above board and consensual on paper, it’s never that simple is it? There’s a reason why she felt she had to agree to opening the marriage - she was on the back foot in that relationship even as a rich and famous pop star (and is now discussing the element of shame and humiliation she feels in dating again at 40). I really don’t know what we as women need to do to win this game but this ain’t it.

this is an interesting comment 👍

OMG, people are so.... come on. Who tf is judging a pop music album in terms of artist's moral, their personality or parental skills??? Are you for real?

Its entertaining. Its unusual, its brutal, raw, shocking and funny. I understand if someone says "I dont like her voice" etc - but saying "I wont listen to it because she had abortions and did not regret it, she is a bad parent and cheated on her ex" is completely ridiculous. Since when we became Bible belt Americans? Getting a strong album burning vibe here.

Same reason people chose not to listen to many artists be it for political or personal reasons. I chose not to listen to certain artists because I don’t agree with what they stand for so have no interest in listening to their music

NormasArse · 26/10/2025 09:58

AngeloMysterioso · 24/10/2025 12:55

Why shouldn’t abortion be used as contraception? She can have as many as she bloody likes.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. It shouldn’t be used as a form of contraception.

i find it sad when people are dispassionate about the arts.
I’ve been moved uncountable times by music, I’ve
laughed
cried
ruminated
been
bored
obsessed
impressed
disgusted
blown away
fascinated
and yes
definitely stunned

I'm a bit stunned that anyone is remotely interested in the intimate lives of showbiz folk.

FourNaanJeremy · 26/10/2025 14:38

I’ve listened to the album and in my opinion it’s bland and uninspired. A poor man’s Lemonade. But then I’ve never liked the type of gormless talk-singing that Lily Allen made her brand.

I also happen to think she is a vile person and always have done.

Marinade · 26/10/2025 15:09

I've read the entire thread, and honestly, the story about onion throwing Jude Law is unsurpassable.

Yes that was awful - using abortion as contraception was very poor role modelling and casually laughing about it was abhorrent

I think she was laughing at the fact she's not a good 'role model'

Agreed! Unforgettable onion story.

Re. the album, I've become hooked on Pussy Palace. So catchy (and tricky to not sing snippets of under my breath while looking after the kids 😬). And Beg for Me, heartbreaking. Also, as a recovering addict, I found Relapse incredibly sad/difficult

Didn’t she write in a book that she’d shagged Liam Gallagher while he was married? Was his wife happy about that being out in the public for all to gawk at and gossip about? Or do other people’s feelings not matter because poor Lily is damaged?

Sorry, my heart just doesn’t bleed for her.

fortinbra · 26/10/2025 15:32

jonnybriggswasgreat · 26/10/2025 06:54

It’s all P.R to sell her album, isn’t it? These ‘revelations’ won’t damage him. It’s her kids who I feel sorry for. All these tawdry stories… I can’t imagine it would have been enjoyable at the school playground in the days after it emerged that mummy used sex workers.

It won't have been, I'm sure there are many messed up things about being the child of a popstar whose life has been splashed allover the tabloids for years. Hopefully she will have prepared them for the album coming out.
