To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

A lot of women on MN will relate to this album so yes she is relevant.

And the relief I feel that I don’t know any of these moral compass people in real life. My life has felt like a constant carcrash due to various challenges and barriers and I spend my whole time seemingly treading water from one calamity to another, I mostly always learn a lesson but some of us just have a lot to deal with.
It’s not always pretty and I haven’t always dealt with everything admirably. Now I realise how many people I might have come across who really didn’t get me or have any empathy for my difficulties

Some people (me included) laugh at things that they actually find painful. I found myself doing this recently and I didn’t even realise - someone had to point it out to me. She sounds quite sensitive to me.

A lot of people on here are furious that Lily has produced an amazing album. It is as though they think she should be struck down because of all the abortions. I bet she’s not proud of them. She suffered with substance addiction and probably made all sorts of mistakes during that time. Despite her demons she has survived and is thriving artistically. Go Lily!

The mind boggles as to how you can listen to those lyrics and call her talentless. how could a talentless person do that?

I dont like her but just listened to her album because of this thread. To me it sounds like it has been written by ChatGBt, very good rhymes and easy listen. But no depth that only humans can do.

This is what I find odd about this thread, and similar. (And I suppose the internet in general).

I just do not get having this amount of vitriol for someone you’ve never met.

I love it when posters take a look in the mirror and describe themselves so honestly.

Honestly this all makes me uncomfortable. This thread is full of people praising Allen for her "brutal honesty" and laying into her ex-husband for the terrible things he's done. It's all being taken as 100% true. But when you look at the interviews Allen is giving about the album, she describes it as "autofiction - a blend of autobiography and fiction", says that she's singing as "a character" in some of the songs, and says it's not "the gospel truth". But of course, she's not telling us which bits she made up.

She's also timed the album release to line up with the promotional cycle for the new series of Stranger Things, in a blatant attempt to cash in on the attention.

I'm sure some people will say she's entitled to do that, and that if Harbour did even some of what she's accused him of, he deserves to have his name dragged through the muck. But it all just seems undignified to me. She's got kids. There comes a point where it's better to take the high road. It might feel satisfying in the moment to lay your dirty laundry out for the whole world to see, but it's drawing more eyes on something that should be personal.

I understand not wanting to let him off the hook. But she's made this into tabloid fodder. Her kids are going to be asked about it, and I don't see how that's fair on them.

Apparently she thought he practiced karate in the west village apartment.. that’s what she means by dojo.

I don’t know her personally but everything I’ve seen, heard and read about her tend to point to her being a terrible person. I won’t be listening.

sorry I didn’t realise we are only supposed to listen to artists considered to be good people…

She may be a terrible person but she is at least incredibly honest and brave to own up to her failings and mistakes, knowing that so many people who have never met her are going to write the nastiest, most vitriolic hate they can think of about her.

I just don’t personally like her, rate any of her previous music or feel sorry to someone born into privilege who has still managed to turn their personal life into a public car crash. I’m just one potential listener though, if enough other people feel differently then the album will do well.

It's not like writing songs about exes is unusual, Taylor Swift has made a career out of it.
