To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

^This. And given the fact that she has no singing talent or artist credibility whatsoever (give me Celeste, any day).

Would we have even heard of LA if it was for her producer mother and famous father's connections? Most of her career is PR aimed at NPCs who'll think she's 'edgy' because that's the image they've worked so hard to craft for her. I think it was hugely predictable and very cringe that she was going to play out her marital drama in a CD, or book, or endless rounds of interviews.

There are plenty of talentless celebrities, but few so relentlessly annoying and attention seeking.

I think she's very talented - after her music came on the scene, so many female popstars sounded like her for years and years - the influence of her music was huge. I don't think she'd claim to be the best vocalist in the world, but hardly anyone writes music that witty and clever

No, I’d prefer her not to make a mockery of terminations. Not much to ask really. If you actually read my comment I was very explicit in saying there was no need for shame. Literally said that but you’ve ignored that part as it doesn’t fit your narrative.

You can be supportive of an individual without blindly backing up every single thing they do or say.

The irony is that it’s actually misogynistic not to expect women to be accountable for their behaviour. And by behaviour, I’m referring to her laughing off terminations.

If you think what she said is ok then there’s nothing further to discuss as we’re not going to agree 🤷‍♀️

@SpidersAreShitheads

for some women abortions really aren’t a big deal though. A medical procedure to remove some unwanted cells in the body. It’s not making a mockery of abortions for a woman to feel that way.

SpidersAreShitheads · 25/10/2025 13:44

No one is judging her from having terminations.

We are judging her from laughing about them. Her words are irresponsible and thoughtless.

You have a very kind interpretation of her words and actions. Unfortunately I just don’t think that’s the case with her. She enjoys attention and revels in being edgy, so it’s on brand. Plus, there’s a long track record of her being pretty unpleasant.

Happy to agree to disagree.

The reason I've made loads of posts about this and am not happy to disagree is because internalised shame and misogyny really matter - the Trump/Farage/Reform lot are coming for our abortion rights, make no mistake.

You will say you believe in abortion rights and I'm sure you do but as a society we haven't got rid of the religious idea that it is wrong to take away a life and that this applies in the case of a woman deciding to have an abortion. The 'women must take abortion seriously and look sombre about it' brigade are continuing the last vestiges of this shame.

A woman can laugh when talking about abortion rights and do whatever the fuck she likes quite frankly. The only reason I wouldn't like hearing a friend laugh or smile when talking about multiple abortions is that I'd be concerned for her putting herself in risky situations. She hasn't hurt anyone else. Nobody goes around maniacally laughing about and enjoying having abortions. People aren't like that and if they are then they have some serious mental health issues. There is no moral dimension to having an abortion.

Personally I don't think as a society we have got to the point where any woman fully feels that way. But we do need to get to the point where it is seen as a 100% neutral procedure.

well, it seems Lily Allen does 🤷‍♀️ and good for her

I think you are getting her confused with Amy Winehouse.

I don't even know anyone who likes her! At work, when she split with DH and someone mentioned her name, most of the women I work with expressed their dislike of her and the fact she is so whiny and annoying (like James Corden, never met anyone who likes him).

Give us a list of this plethora of female pop stars who emulated LA for years and years?

Thegrassroots26 · 25/10/2025 17:01

Why does it feel like so many people come on these threads looking for an argument with a complete stranger?! Very odd behaviour.

Superhansrantowindsor · 25/10/2025 17:11

fortinbra · 25/10/2025 15:42

Lots of 1950s moralising going on on this thread. If a friend of yours had an affair would you write them off forever?!

Already done it

Bloozie · 25/10/2025 17:15

TonTonMacoute · 24/10/2025 16:30

I've always felt that you never do yourself any favours by so publicly slagging off someone else, and as PPs have said, she's behaved pretty badly herself. I've already seen one review headline saying the reviewer felt sorry for her ex!

Can't stand her. Wish she'd bore off and keep her problems and her yacht in the Mediterranean to herself.

But... I mean... This is...

Isn't this you doing yourself no favours by publicly slagging off Lily Allen?

Bloozie · 25/10/2025 17:23

She wasn't laughing about abortion. She was laughing at herself for not remembering how many she has had, and within that, the laughter is clearly a defence mechanism. If she's had an IUD for 15 - 20 years, it's also clear that the abortions happened in her late teens/early twenties, when she was in the grip of addictions and mental health issues.

On the same podcast, Miquita Oliver said she too has had 4 or 5 abortions. We aren't stringing her up for them.

Let's normalise talking about abortion and minimising shame. It shouldn't be a taboo subject. I've had an abortion. I feel zero guilt about it, but for some reason I can't talk about it irl because there's so much moral judgement out there. Let's not.

I listened to the album in full last night and it's brilliant. I'm not a Lily Allen fan in that I don't especially like her music and don't really pay much attention to her acting career - but I am a fan of women being open and real, in whatever form that takes. The line in one of her songs: "I've know you've made me your Madonna, I wanna be your whore." really resonated with me. The 'woman as saint' trope is boring. Give me messy reality any day.

Figgly · 25/10/2025 17:34

I’ve listened to the new album today. Wow. She’s really hung him out to dry. This chorus from “Come on then” gave me a wry laugh.

Yeah, I'm a bad mother, I'm a bad wife
You saw it on the socials, you read it online
If you go on record saying that you know me
Then why am I so lonely? 'Cause nobody fucking phones me

RaspberryCloud · 25/10/2025 17:45

I’ve listened to that album 3 times today - a masterpiece! That track is brutal - I can’t imagine there are many women who have not experienced the scenarios it describes….men will never know what it’s like but I appreciate Dave’s attempt to educate

Figgly · 25/10/2025 17:50

Very true. It’s a great album.

SmugglersHaunt · 25/10/2025 17:59

I think she’s a vile, nepo baby, nasty piece of work. There’s another side to this story I’m sure

Tiredandtrying · 25/10/2025 18:12

A positive post about Lily Allen and her music is never going to go down well with the pearl clutching almond mums of mumsnet.

hcee19 · 25/10/2025 18:17

Went right off her when she said she could not remember how many abortions she has had....absolutely disgusting...Vile....

I've not forgiven her for claiming she "didn't know how many abortions she'd had" and laughing about it; not because I'm anti-abortion, but because it shouldn't be used as contraception and she is in an influential position for young women.

Exactly. How can anyone be flippant about abortion whatever your beliefs it should be treated with respect. I remember when she decided to apologise on behalf of the whole UK because apparently we are all anti immigration.

I don’t think DH sounds pleasant at all. She gave up so much & if there’s any truth in ‘Pussy Palace’ - urgh.

BatchCookBabe · 25/10/2025 18:22

I can't stand the woman. And I hate her 'singing' voice. Wouldn't put myself through the torture of listening to her new album.

I thought she had 'retired' from the music industry about a decade and a half ago? 🙄

Is she not getting enough attention?

Irksome nepo-baby!

AmIthatSpringy · 25/10/2025 18:24

Im surprised she's still relevant.

Pussy palace is a great song

It’s stuck in my head 😄

WeeGeeBored · 25/10/2025 18:26

I think it is a stunning achievement. Incredibly moving. She has turned her pain into art. Well done, Lily.
