To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

I agree with PP - I was pretty appalled by her really irresponsible attitude towards having terminations.

It’s not the fact that she had terminations, that’s her business - but laughing about them and not being able to remember how many you had is pretty shocking.

You don’t need to wear a sack cloth or self-flagellate but acting as if terminations can be treated casually, carried out multiple times on a whim - and with thought for possible consequences - is unbelievably arrogant and irresponsible. Many terminations are straightforward. Some are not. And some women struggle afterwards unexpectedly. There are very good reasons why the medical profession don’t advise that terminations are treated as a regular alternative to proper contraception.

I understand that there are people on this thread who seem determined to defend her at all costs. It seems bizarre to me when she has a long history of pretty vile behaviour, even setting her attitude to terminations aside.

Like most people I dislike, I wouldn’t actively seek out her music but if it came on the radio or TV, I wouldn’t automatically turn it over. I prefer to avoid putting money in the pockets of people who I don’t like; similarly, I would deliberately try to support any artist that I liked who I thought was a decent person.

I think actions matter and I prefer to focus my support towards people who I think make a positive contribution to the world. LA has consistently shown herself to be entirely self-absorbed and rather unpleasant.

I think the moralising about women having abortions is awful and outdated. She is clearly being deliberately defiant because she's tired of lifetime of shit from the tabloids - she knows she's going to be judged so she's developed a defence. I've noticed she will often laugh when discussing serious topics - I actually think it's a mixture of bravado and in the past immaturity. It doesn't mean she didn't have more complicated feelings about the abortions. People are complicated.

fortinbra · 25/10/2025 04:24

SouthernNights59 · 25/10/2025 01:25

How would she be 'forced' to have unwanted babies? Contraception has been around for quite a long time and while accidents can happen someone would have to be spectacularly stupid to get pregnant multiple times and think that abortion is the only answer.

I judge both her and you.

We will all make a note that you officially judge Lily Allen and the OP

Happily the judgement of random strangers on the internet has absolutely fuck all effect on my actual real life so, you do you!

😅

I most stunned that people actually rate LA as a musician. I literally don’t know a single person who has ever viewed her as anything other than a talentless nepo baby.

^This. And given the fact that she has no singing talent or artist credibility whatsoever (give me Celeste, any day).

Would we have even heard of LA if it was for her producer mother and famous father's connections? Most of her career is PR aimed at NPCs who'll think she's 'edgy' because that's the image they've worked so hard to craft for her. I think it was hugely predictable and very cringe that she was going to play out her marital drama in a CD, or book, or endless rounds of interviews.

There are plenty of talentless celebrities, but few so relentlessly annoying and attention seeking.

Superhansrantowindsor · 25/10/2025 08:15

Looked up her wiki entry after this thread yesterday. She had an affair with a married man too so no sympathy. I have always found her talking style of singing irritating enough to turn the radio off when she’s played.

Mangetoutmangetouti · 25/10/2025 08:59

leftorrightnow · 25/10/2025 02:13

I like her. She’s honest and raw. Take her over Taylor swift or some other polished Barbie doll any day- it always makes me laugh when people say TS is so honest and open shen she’s so American and polished, yes she shared some bad relationship so tired but everything so sanitized and nothing too shocking.

sad to hear Lily had been treated badly.
She’s a heroine for all those of us who’ve had messy and less than perfect lives and had relationships we regret and abortions and twenties were we probably partied too much. Yep, that’s me and I like it when someone else makes me feel less alone and ashamed.

Yes.
It’s only black and white for some people and unfortunately many of those never learn the nuances, moralising and remain judgmental with little understanding, empathy or compassion for the reality of many.
sadly these black and white thinkers are often in positions of influence or authority over those who are more vulnerable.
the attitudes and disrespect towards those in need of support sadly perpetuate things like poor understanding of how to manage contraception because they alienate those in need of support

Mangetoutmangetouti · 25/10/2025 09:04

leftorrightnow · 25/10/2025 02:18

Maybe she’s just really fertile. I can only thank my PCO for having had only two abortions I can tell you that. I was ridiculously careless in my twenties. When I think back on it I can’t believe it actually. Except, I do know I was wasted half the time and mentally unstable. I just wasn’t thinking clearly. If you’ve lived your whole life in control you likely have no idea what I’m talking about. Good for you. But don’t judge others whose lives have been much more difficult than yours. She’s joking about the abortions because it’s too painful to be honest about how she feels. Everyone knows dark humor is a trauma response.

Hundred percent this

I think this album is outstanding. Not really into her music before - I might be just a bit too old to have caught her earlier stuff.

But - this thread has given me pause for thought and I am not sure why. It has really made me think about how it must feel to be dissected by people who don’t know me, and some of it being quite vitriolic. It is as if she’s not a real human being.

Sorry, what?! He threw onions at you? 😄I've rarely felt the need to laugh out loud on reading a post. Did this really happen? Obviously more details are required

Sadly , I can corroborate this story.
It was a well known event among the Primrose Hill set back in the day.

fortnightly on a Wednesday afternoon, Jude collected his dole money and then straight to the grocers.

he was just going about his daily business but somehow word got out about his routine.

he started being mithered by fawning adoration from fans and harassment from men and women of the press.

he just wanted to get home and start his batch cooking so he devised a cunning plan to keep people beyond arms length and thus the extra bag of onions was born .

most of us locals knew to keep our heads down and treat him like any other stranger in the street - once you’ve been bruised by a flying onion, you soon learn your lesson and give him the space he craves.

but he always bought extra onions to hoy at mitherers just in case.
Tragically he often had cause to use them 🧅🧅🧅

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 25/10/2025 09:43

I used to find her very tiresome and I wouldn’t have sought out the new album but for reading the reviews. Having had a listen it’s pretty good I think. It’s certainly entertaining as a massive fuck you.

I know he’s not the father to her daughters but I do wonder about the decision to move them to NYC on a whim when their lives (and presumably their father) are in the UK. I can’t imagine how chaotic their lives have been. Perhaps it’s just part and parcel of being a celeb child and they adapt but still.

The final thing is that I loved Stranger Things when it came out (stopped at season 2 tho so just a fleeting thing) but Hopper was such a great character and I think in my head I’d assumed DH was basically just like Hopper in RL. Clearly not. I’ll never look at him the same way again!

Toseland · 24/10/2025 12:37

I've not forgiven her for claiming she "didn't know how many abortions she'd had" and laughing about it; not because I'm anti-abortion, but because it shouldn't be used as contraception and she is in an influential position for young women.

@Toseland

what makes you think we has used abortions as a means of contraception?
it’s her body her choice at the end of the day

Lol, yes it really did happen! It was when him and Sadie were getting divorced and was sent down there to their house, well, Sadies house and he was walking back with his shopping. He was so angry about it, he lost it. Fair enough, not exactly the best time in his life I presume.
Luckily don't work in the media now, not for some years so no more onions. I do hope he had to go back to the shop though and get himself some more.. :-)

I think the album is great.
I'm a bit on the fence about Lily, but it sounds like she agreed to an open relationship for him and it went very badly.
I can sympathise with this, I (admittedly in my very early 20s, not mid-30s) agreed to a similar agreement because I desperately wanted to be with the charming, charismatic older man - who it turned out was a very damaged, mentally unwell, addict. I'd have bloody loved to have written an album and dragged him through the mud.

I love Lily in all her unfiltered drama.
Despite what people have written to the contrary, she’s so gifted.
i was fully prepared to hate this album but actually, beyond the reason it’s drawing attention, i really like it. It’s hooked me straight away.
I hope she starts her second act without him.
And I hope David Harbour gets flayed in the next season.

It’s… quite something! Cara de la Hoyde has just said in an insta story “if you’re having a bad day today, just remember you’re not David Harbour” 😂 matey has one hell of an awkward press tour coming his way!! Think a lot of Stranger Things/Marvel fans won’t be looking at him the same way ever again…

I certainly will be looking at Hopper differently! 🤨 will need to mentally separate them to still enjoy it 😅

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/10/2025 12:51

Her new boobs are quite good though... no plans to listen to her music. She can't sing.

My daughter is a classically-trained singer, with a range greater than 4 octaves and perfect pitch.
She hasn’t really paid Lily much attention but sat listening to this with me this morning - her first comment? „God, her voice is lovely.“
You can not like her, not find her voice to your taste, etc but to say she can’t sing is just not accurate.

localnotail · 25/10/2025 11:03

Its quite sad how female artists get judged so harshly for stuff male musicians were getting away with (and still getting away with) for ages.

Lily is fun, her music is fun and entertaining. She is talented, no matter what anyone says; same as her brother is a talented actor. I know they got a leg up, but having a famous parent is not enough - if you dont believe me, look up James Jagger, guess who's son he is... He is a shit talentless actor and no amount of his dad's money and protection would help (and his dad is much more famous than Lily's). Or look at Paul McCartney's son - if its so easy to become famous, why he is so crap?

I just had a quick listen to a few, Madeline was quite striking. Insinuates she had an arrangement with David to allow him to sleep with sex workers… She was happy with him cheating and accepted it but not if emotion was attached. Bit of a warped idea of marriage.

You need to listen to some of the other tracks. West end girl is presumably where DH calls her up while she is back in London and tells her he wants to open the marriage.

I'm surprised Zoe Kravitz allegation of assault hasn't been mentioned here - Lily claimed in her book that they kissed, Zoe said it was 'an attack'

Lily doesn't exactly go to great lengths to deny the allegation

Azealia Banks also claims Lily was racist towards her but that Lily later apologised for the racist tweets. If I recall correctly Lily had dressed her husbands penis up in 'black face' (can it be called that on a penis?) and tweeted it out to Azealia.

Lily has always been problematic which is why I'm surprised to see her garner so much support on here. A difficult or traumatic childhood doesn't excuse behaviour much later in life.

I haven't listened to her album yet, I'm not sure if I will or not - I'm assuming it to be similar to Beyonces Lemonade album?

Not sure how I feel about celebs airing their dirty laundry in public when there are children involved either, just feels a bit 'off' to me.

Wow, lily in that second video, really looks like jack monroe in a wig. I forgot how much they looked like each other (for a while)

I definitely agreed to things I wasn’t comfortable with, especially with older men when I was younger.
Sometimes those who are vulnerable or neurodivergent or have insecure or anxious attachment styles, or have been made insecure or anxious by being in relationships with people who are stronger, controlling or manipulative , can bend uncomfortably to try and meet the needs of the other person in order to keep the relationship going and to keep the ’love’ coming.
for whatever reason, they don’t want to be a lone, they’re really caught up in this person, intermittent love and affection, sunk cost fallacy , saving face etc etc., billions of reasons why people stay in damaging relationships or dynamics which aren’t their absolute moral choice

So true! Some awful men around. Awful. And that ten year age difference between LA and DH possibly should’ve rung some alarm bells.
