To be a bit stunned by Lily Allen’s new album

Oooofff. I mean it might as well be called Fuck You David Harbour, You Cheating Bastard. Safe to say she’s set a new bar for diaristic songwriting. I feel so sad for her, I know she’s not everyone’s favourite person but it’s always been clear that all she wanted was to love and be loved and she seemed so happy with him- he popped up on her podcast with Miquita Oliver a few times and seemed so genuine in the way he spoke about her… for it to all collapse in such spectacularly public and hideous fashion must have been awful to endure, so I don’t blame her for working through it by going back to what she does best but still… blimey. I feel like I’ve been spying in their bedroom or something after listening to it!

Wasn’t she pretty deep into her drug/alcohol addiction at the time?

She said on the podcast that she used female sex workers after the break up.

“If it has to happen, baby, do you want to know?”

Fucking brutal. What a prick.

I knew Lily when we were kids, we were friends for a while. I was going through some shit myself but she was by far the saddest child I've ever known. I hated going to her (Mum's) house (never went to her Dad's) because it didn't feel like a home at all.
When she put out her first album I mostly thought 'oh shit she's never going to find peace now' and... so it is.
I feel sorry for her but I feel even more sorry for her kids, I guess that's intergenerational trauma for you though.

By all accounts, she seems like a really good Mum and spends a lot of time with her girls.

It does seem like she's trying to stop the cycle and strives to provide a loving home where the kids and their friends love to congregate.

"If you have to ask me, you're toast". That sentiment has to be the only response if you have any self respect.

And the type that trot that line out have been cheating already,

localnotail · 24/10/2025 18:45

OMG, people are so.... come on. Who tf is judging a pop music album in terms of artist's moral, their personality or parental skills??? Are you for real?

Its entertaining. Its unusual, its brutal, raw, shocking and funny. I understand if someone says "I dont like her voice" etc - but saying "I wont listen to it because she had abortions and did not regret it, she is a bad parent and cheated on her ex" is completely ridiculous. Since when we became Bible belt Americans? Getting a strong album burning vibe here.

Oh come off it, I'm not judging you by pointing out that at the end of the day, two women talking about their own lives and experiences isn't subject to your own personal sensitivities. When you choose to take their comments as someone personal to who to the point you're disgusted by them, there's some judgement of their experiences there. Notice I didn't call your opinion disgusting and I didn't also say you should never be able to comment, because I'm not actually judging you for your opinion by commenting in disagreement.

Ok.

Yes. And on reflection I wonder whether she was so full on involving DH with her daughters in order to create a perfect little family. Having read some of his interviews where he talks about the selflessness of being a stepfather, I think he probably sold her a lot of bullshit and preyed on her insecurities

Anyway I’ve listened to some of it and my main takeaway is “David Harbour, what a prick”

lol. In what sense?

The whole broken English album is about relationships, life and pain but the song Why'd Ya Do It is one of my favourite relationship let down rage songs ever , way more ‘rrraaaaarrrggghhh’ vicious than anything Taylor swift could produce

Vile . I have definitely been there when younger 😭😭😭
i remember one of the podcasts where she said she was reading a book about open relationships, she didn’t sound happy then

Lilacblu · 24/10/2025 19:00

I wasn't sure about Lily Allen's attitude sometimes but I saw her on her thing with her sister and I think she's just honest.. says it as it is so what he's done to deserve this.. Wouldn't wanna be him....YOU Go girl Lily... 😉💕

Wouldn’t want to be Madeleine either. She gets a lot of name checks.

I thought he was such a good one - the way he spent time with the kids on his own and mooned about Lily on the podcase.

What a shit.

I remember one of them where she talked about DH being (I think) disappointed that she was so vanilla. She was quite lighthearted. Kind of “he knows I did all this stuff in the past and now I don’t” and laughing. I think a lot of that podcast is going to be seen in a whole new light.

I also acknowledge I’m spending far longer than a woman of my age should dissecting this.

She absolutely doesn’t land anything at Madeline’s doorstep though. Very fair to her.

Ok…but it isn’t particularly like West End Girl in any way other than being an angry breakup album - as in it doesn’t sound the same, the lyrics, vibe and sentiment aren’t the same, the culture being skewered isn’t the same, etc. I hardly think you can say that LA’s album rips off Broken English!

Mangetoutmangetouti · 24/10/2025 19:09

BackToLurk · 24/10/2025 18:05

I get all of that. I think the bit I struggle with is her giving DH such a central role in her daughters’ life. I guess we never know how much of what she said is bravado (another reason why I’m cautious about taking her ‘honesty’ at face value), but she did seem very much to set him up as a father to them.

Yes I agree. We can only speculate but I presume he sold her a dream and no matter how recovered she might be, she may still not be immune to charms of a man offering a fairytale.

i feel for her and i really feel for her girls because she has been incredibly candid and raw and although i have experienced mental health blips as a single mum, (including low episodes when a relationship has imploded )
I have never expressed any of my dark thoughts or fears and I would hate to think of them worrying about me.

i grew up with mentally and emotionally unstable parents were there was addiction issues etc and its had a lifelong impact on me ,
I lived much of my life in pure fear, fight or flight and a state of panic and nothing was secret or sacred, i knew way too much, before i was able to understand any of it.

i feel for her girls in that regard and hope that they’re living a life where they are protected from the worst of it and with their dad as a safe person for them while she was recovering.

Outside9 · 24/10/2025 19:10

I'm amazed people care she released an album.

Love her earlier work though.

BackToLurk · 24/10/2025 19:10

I think you're sinking, you're protecting a lie
And you don't want her thinking that you'd cheat on your wife
You're such a coward, you can't tell the truth
You love all the power but you're not even cute

Oof

No , not rip off, i obviously misread your post, I thought you were saying that break up rage songs were not common or a reasonably new concept. Ignore me 🙈

also rumours fleetwood mac 🤣🙌🏼

Not sure why it’s so surprising. Lots of us have grown up with her and care about her as a person and an artist.

As a divorced 40s mum of two teens myself I also love what she says about the dating world and how hard it is. She just honest and flawed. Like all of us.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 24/10/2025 19:14

She is definitely marmite.
She is not for me.

I’ve seen people comparing Allen’s song ‘Madeline’ to ‘Jolene’.

Although I’m surprised people are automatically believing everything she is saying anyway.

CommonAsMucklowe · 24/10/2025 19:15

Just get the feeling she's quite hard work. Is she still a dog owner? Hope not.

Much of this is very familiar to me too. As with every creative work, everyone’s experience will determine their response.

I hope this can be her last ‘fuck you’ and she can recover and flourish.

Edit: that sounded less pompously twatty in my head.
