Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Maybe in the next series he will smash up the venue and get his mates to chant nasty things at everyone going in, as they recently did in Brighton, because they haven't made it all about him?

There's room for realism yet I suppose.

HeadNorth · 20/10/2025 10:49

I thought a trans person getting on with her life & being accepted in Hebden Bridge was pretty realistic

Yes, a man who says he’s a woman taking the place of a lesbian sounds pretty true to life.

I think this exact thing actually happened in Hebden Bridge where a lesbian stalwart of the community was banned from a lesbian organisation on the say so of such men. What a coincidence.

FFS chill out. He’s not a major character and stands in to help out. The drama is brilliant and it’s about women (biological or recognised) and their fight to be noticed and not taken for granted. It’s not about trans rights but being part of a movement.

So what do males with a trans identity and women have in common that they don’t have with men and females with a trans identity that they would fight for the same things. I think people are annoyed as the male world have no clue about being taken for granted and not noticed. I mean, even now people will listen to a man saying he’s a woman before they’ll listen to a woman saying he’s not.

DoinFineIThink · 19/10/2025 21:42

Taking women's identies as your own is not OK

See, I'm a woman (not trans) and this is just complete nonsense to me. My identity is mine. I'm me. Someone else's identity is nothing to do with me, they're not taking my identity. I'm me.

So if woman has no meaning, how do you know you’re a woman? What references are you using?

I've only seen 2 episodes - does he get into the band later?

Typical BBC shite if so.

I feel sorry for you being so hate-filled. Trans people are real and here to stay. They’re not doing it for fun.

Yes. They are real. And that’s fine. They can wear what they like, call themselves what they like as long as they use any facilities relevant to their biological sex.

Woman is not an identity, it’s a sex.

You have already lost your word to define yourself as a woman and have had to change it to “woman (not trans)” - to differentiate yourself from the men who also want to use the word woman.

If you refer to a man as ‘she’ then you make it almost impossible to explain why ‘she’ can’t use the ladies toilets, or become part of a band for menopausal women*. Because then you have to start breaking women down into our health conditions or body parts. And that’s rather dehumanising.

*If a younger woman joined the band of menopausal women that would still work as she has menopause as an inevitable future situation.

Of course they can be in tv programmes, just not shoehorned in as if they were actual women, or vice versa (and preferably clearly advertised because I am not interested in watching those people).

I’m sure there is some genre somewhere where they would shine.

WildLimePoet · 20/10/2025 12:59

Probably and naff attempt at being woke, sorry progressive. These people never learn.

Fair enough, I didn't find it shoehorned it in in this show.

They clearly didn't understand the rage part of the menopausal target audience!

I honestly think the majority of people don't hate transpeople as much as a group of mumsnetters, to the extent they cannot cope with them being on TV at all.

I don't think you've been reading what people have been saying.
We just don't want them pretending to be women on a show that has no relevance to them whatsoever. There is no need and it adds nothing but increasing anger that they get a place in a show that could have a woman portraying an actual female experience.

They've been losing a lot of goodwill from all sections of society because of their pushy, violent and very public behaviours - it's not just MN.

Internet: Mumsnet can’t get any more transphobic than it is already

Duh… I’m female, have read it, have been here over a decade, and m not telling anyone what they think.

Trashing this show for featuring a transwoman character played by a transwoman is plain prejudice and deserves to be called out.

So if I don't align with the trans hatred of certain mumsnetters, I must be a man? Oh well, I've been called worse Grin

So you would accept a minstrel in a show about the slave trade I guess?
A disabled band with a completely non-disabled person pretending to be disabled? No?
Would it work with any other characteristic? No.
So stop shoving it in women's faces.

For the people who clearly haven't read the thread.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 20/10/2025 13:42

BBC isn't it?
Still trying to force feed the narrative that men are "just normal women".

I didn’t know that it was settled that it was supposed to be a trans character? No one has mentioned a ‘coming out’ scene where it is explained who he is and why he’s there?

Or did the programme writers realise that he was so obviously a man presenting as a woman, there was no need?

It’s not hatred to object to a man playing a female part.

If they wanted a trans character many PPs in this thread have clearly said they wouldn’t object to a woman who identified as a man (although it would still be a bit weird because quite frankly, the claim that people can change sex is). It’s not obvious afaik that this was even supposed to be a trans character though.

pointythings · 20/10/2025 14:29

Well, having skimmed through this thread I am now definitely going to watch this.

I've been called a man too. If you don't fall in line with the narrative, you must be a man. Meh.
